There is no such thing as a default subdomain. "www" has to be put into the DNS and webserver config as a sub-domain. If it wasn't put in, then only the domain name can be pulled up and you wouldn't be able to reach the site via www.domainname.com.

I setup wicked-angel.com as a example.
With "www": http://www.wicked-angel.com
Without: http://wicked-angel.com

No, you can setup a website to just be http://domain.com

WWW part is what people have been trained to type in.

I have read where some people thought typing www. was redundant and therefore didn't put in DNS entries to map WWW. to their IP when a surfer typed it in.

You need to put in a DNS entry to map WWW.domain.com to the correct IP. Same true if you were doing mail.domain.com, etc

What remains to be heard are the patent infringement claims.

Those that received the letters need to have an attorney get that information, since their first letter was to just respond within 20 days of receiving notice.

as far as i understood the patent is targeting companies that offer automated subdomain hosting with wildcards...Sent to legal to get a more indepth understanding just in case.

Larry Walters has been banging his head against the wall for so many years, warning webmasters about 2257 issues, government prosecution, etc.. more so than the 14 posts his stats show.

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't the Wayback Machine (archive.org) be effective for this? For example: archive.org has archives of chat.yahoo.com dating back to December 1997. Wouldn't this essentially be a prime example of prior art? Or no?

Is there a law against abusing the patent system?

If not, then they need to make one.

People like this need to be forced to pay huge fines.

Hmm. If you read through the "claims" there is no mention of this patent applying exclusively to websites or http, just domains/wildcards/storing and serving content.

Doesn't this apply to FTP sites as well? If that's the case, you can probably find prior examples of this sort of thing going back decades...

You need to take the "s" out of "decades". Domain names have only been around for about a decade. Of course I could be wrong.

Shouldn't be too hard, I found my personal web page (which is on a subdomain) on web.archive.org. Unfortunately it was first indexed in December 1998. I am sure there are plenty of other sites that existed before then which can be verified with the wayback archive.

edit: here you go.

http://web.archive.org/web/199611110...://www.ml.org/

You used to be able to get a free ANYNAME.ml.org subdomain.

I don't really understand how things like popups and subdomains can be patented by people so many years after they have been created, by someone who had nothing to do with their idea or creation.

Is there no one in the patent office who is at all up to date with technology? How can they approve patents on things they do not fully understand, shouldn't there be someone to at least search for prior art as far as technology is concerned? It's not like the internet was a new thing in 1999.

This is still only the beginning of what is to come from what I know. Acacia (and those who have settled with them) have done nothing except open up the floodgates for more and more opportunistic vultures to pick at our industry.

What is it going to take to make some of you realize that settling isn't the correct option? What?

Fucking bankruptcy? What?

A domain by definition is a subdomain.

domain.com

domain is a subdomain of the .com TLD.

How can you invent something that was already invented?

It'll never fly.

Someone needs to give the US Patent system a major enema.
