Best Home Run hitter of all time

I remember a thread about the best NFL quarterback. Well here is one about MLB HR hitters.

I recently had a drunken debate about this at the local sports bar.

Babe Ruth in my opinion is the greatest slugger in MLB history. Everyone else had a different fucked up opinion.

Whats yours

Babe Ruth was on THG!

Also, he never faced any minority players or the superior athletes of today.

I can agree with Babe Ruth if we're talking "clean" homerun hitters.....

Without a doubt Ruth was the greatest flat out hitter of all time and the greatest slugger too. When he joined the Yankees, he started hitting fulltime and stopped pitching and his batting average with the Yankees was .349, which is significantly higher than Ted Williams' lifetime average (.344).

As for slugging, just look at his lifetime slugging percentage (.697) -- no one is even close. He hit more homers than whole teams combined. Someone whould have to hit about 250 to 300 homers nowadays to compare to him.

Hard for me to talk about someone who I never saw.

Of those I did, Mr October is the one I would say was the best Slugger.

When Reggie hit those three home runs in one game in the Series.... awesome.

Babe Ruth.

Pisses me off with the HR hitters like McGwire, Bonds, Sosa being mentioned in the same breath as the original HR hitters.

If they weren't on the juice they wouldn't be doing 50, 60, 70 HR's in a season.

Back in the 1920's while he was hitting 50+ homeruns that was more then most teams would acquire in totall.

To this day he has the highest slugging % carrer/season

If he had not spent the first portion of his career as a pitcher he would have Hank Aaron beat buy a couple hundred or so.

But still there are some that debate "Barry Bonds' or "Hank Aaron" or somebody else is better

babe ruth, mcgwire was a great home run hitter since his rookie year but i wouldnt put him up there with babe ruth... bonds is a joke, its funny how jose canseco wont get into the hall of fame because he finished on a negative note but bonds will even though canseco was much better for most of his career... bonds had a few great seasons in the last few years and while his career was good before them you really cant put him up there with ruth or anyone because the ball is juiced and the players are juiced... if anyone says hank aaron i say nigga please... look how many more at bats and games he played in to get 41 more home runs

what would babe ruth do against todays pitchers? Not much. He would have a heart attack while swinging wildly at some of those pitches.

People also forget that Ruth started out as a pitcher - and he was a great pitcher at that.

I will pick Ruth everytime. Based on a couple of things... he certainly wasn't in good physical shape, like the players today and the fields back then were fucking HUGE!!!!

How would Ruth have handled the media pressure that Aaron had to undergo or Bonds has to undergo?

When Ruth played, sports reporters were much kinder to the players

What if he had reporters hounding him everyday about his womanizing, drinking, etc.?

while there s no doubt Ruth is one of the greats, I'd have to go with Willie Mays...he played in a less than hitter friendly ballpark

I really do wonder how the legends of yesteryear would have handled the media scrutiny that today's stars have to deal with.

You are welcome

You gotta go with Ruth as the best player to date. Arod I guess is making a run for that title.

Ruth was a great hitter with power, then you add the title of a dominating left handed pitcher to the mix and you gotta be impressed.

Im sick of these steroid fuckers thinking they are as good as the legends. take away the smaller parks and needles and see how many homers they hit.
