Without a doubt Ruth was the greatest flat out hitter of all time and the greatest slugger too. When he joined the Yankees, he started hitting fulltime and stopped pitching and his batting average with the Yankees was .349, which is significantly higher than Ted Williams' lifetime average (.344).
As for slugging, just look at his lifetime slugging percentage (.697) -- no one is even close. He hit more homers than whole teams combined. Someone whould have to hit about 250 to 300 homers nowadays to compare to him.
