what did you eat when you were poor?

I'm always interested in hearing how creative people can be to survive. When you were poor (assuming you have been) what was the cheapest but tastiest meals you managed to put together?

Tuna on crackers with a baked potato. Very cheap and pretty tasty. I still eat it every now and then.

In college we used to eat full meals at 7/11 all the time. A hotdog, bag of chips, and drink was like $1.50 or something. Fuck that expensive mac and cheeze.

Ramen, definately. 6 for $1 most of the time and 10 for $1 on sale. I also ate alot of canned new potatoes, beans and rice, microwave burritos, rice with diced tomatoes and butter (this is surprisingly delicious).. and during the REALLY poor times I ate mayonnaise and mustard sandwiches! Oh, and lots of Kool-Aid at 10 cents a packet. LOL

The very best place to go if you're going through a cash crunch or are just a frugal fucker are restaurants / bars with big happy hour buffets.

I had an aunt in Newport Beach that did this every night for her dinner. Knew all the places with virtually full course food selections.

Ramen is good.

I boil them in the microwave and then mix cheese and hotdog pieces in with it. It's better than regular boxed mac & cheese.

Growing up when times were tough we ate a lot of pastas, rices and home grown veggies. The big bulk bottles of tomato sauce would last weeks.

Luckily the one side of my family is/was all farmers. Fresh foods were always available.

why do americans classify ramen noodles as a poor people food?

have any of you lived near Asian people?

good lord, there are asian sections here where you can eat Ramen in a restaraunt and its not even cheap. ive ordered ramen in a restaraunt, its very authentic and very asian, they just put things in it, maybe its because poor white trash and poor blacks in america eat it plain and have no clue about ethnicity?

its just rice noodles, and rice noodles are cheap, ive always wondered are all Asian people poor, because all the asians i know have always eaten a ton of ramen....

its a silly thing that has become of a cultural food.

its just a form of noodle folks, are you saying pasta is for poor people? or is rice?

i still eat ramen and always will.

its got nothing to do with being poor, its got weverything to do with enjoying rice noodles.

can you make your own rice noodles? or would you prefer to buy them at the store for under 25 cents a bag?

capitalism is love.

Since they are inexpensive.....it is an affordable meal for those less fortunate.....

it's not like we are saying eating ramen is like having head lice or even blowing truckers for candy bars at truck stops....

In addition to Ramen and Mac&Cheese (including the Golden Grain box, which didn't demand milk, so it was cheaper to make,) there was Rice, made in a cooker, with a can of chicken noodle soup cooked in.

And, on a rich nite, Hamburger Helper (sometimes w/o the hamburger)

Topic: what did you eat when you were poor?
Lets see, today I had a scrambled egg with a slice of cheese topped with a lot of hunger pangs. Tomorrow I may go all out and get some vienna sausages to add to my instant mac. I get to pick the sausages up from lay-away so I'll party like it's 1999! Wait, I was even more poor then!

I can still smell the sweet aroma of balogna sizzling on a hot plate.

For me it was a head of lettuce and a can of tuna. Canned beans.

And balogna quesodilla's fresh off the hotplate...

Man I miss being homeless.
