Thanks for all the input about the cars; wow lots of replys!
Just a couple of things; I don't want this to be a track car. My brother owns a Ferrari 360 Stradale Challange so if I want to blow some steam off on a track I just borrow his car and do a couple of laps. My everyday car is an Audi A8 that I use when I need to be fancy and have to travel in style. I really, really love that car. I've sold my S430 Benz to get that car and I must say it was worth it (Benz = $120,000, A8 = $70,000). What I really want this "weekend" car for is to feel sporty and head down to the beach house with my wife on the weekends. Yes, you can go down there with the A8 but its kinda a "stuffy", for lack of a better word, experience. I want to drive something small, responsive and fun.
I've narrowed it down between the S2000 and the VW because I've been a VW Golf/GTI nut all my life but the S2000 looks very fun also. I saw every single S2000 video from Go Fast Video and pretty much the fire for the S2000 started up in my heart again (I had a "crush" on the car previously before). Since I've owned a VW GTI before I know how much fun driving a VW is (you should really try it; it's Fun with a capitol F). I think next I need to check out the S2000. I'm going to Vegas soon and the place I usually rent from Dream Car Rentals has the S2000 so I'll be heading down to Lake Meed with that car to see how it handles. My only concern about the S2000 is comfort. I'm 6"2' and I have a hard time with smaller cars. Driving a Benz SLK is impossible for me. The seats don't go back far enough and the stearing wheel is in my lap. I wonder if that will be the case with the S2000.

I think the only real answer is stop askin clueless people on a forum, turn up in your A8 at both dealers and ask for a test drive of each and make your own decision.

Yeah I think that's what's going to happen. I think I'll just show up at the dealerships (without my A8) and go for a test drive. It just sucks because there's snow all over the roads here and since the S2000 is rear wheel drive you need to be careful with it. The last thing I want is to total the car during the test drive. It just sucks because I want that car by the time the weather is going to get better and I'm such a car nut that this undecisiveness is keeping me up at night. I know I need professional help...
The reason why I've asked here is because I know there are people here who are bigger car nuts then me and quite possibly they own one of the two cars. I'd rather hear the pros/cons from the horses mouth rather then a sales guy who is driven by commision. I love this board, anything and everything flys here

Heh yeah, and we've got more vids going up there soon

Check out www.s2ki.com and do some trolling there for more info about the S2000 than you could imagine.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a "weekend" car, I can't see how the VW could be considered. That doesn't make it a crappy car, not by a longshot, but when I think about taking off for a drive, I'm thinking 2 seat sports car and not grocery getter (regardless of how fast said grocery-getter might be in a straight line).

Dude, 0-30 times isn't canyon carving Neither is 0-60 or 1/4 mile times. Going fast in a straight line is as much fun as standing around and watching grass grow.

Again, I state that there are no VW's at track events I attend, unless they're there as support vehicles carrying a load of tires for the fast guys.

Replace your cams, put on a hefty turbo (depending on how fast you want it), grab an intercooler, I prefer Remus for exhaust, throw on some bigger brakes if you're going to do upgrades though. Coil Overs are tight on the Jetta, love em. 6 way adjustable are fine unless you're going on the track, then go 20 way. Don't forget to grab yourself a chip, easiest way to boost your performance with the least amount of work.

It seems as though your driving experiences depend solely on the fact that the car is a two seater and a convertible. One of which creates a totally pejorative effect in terms of road handling performance.

First of all two cars in two completely different classes are being compared here which makes pros and cons plentiful and unfair on both ends. The main thing to realize here is that these two cars were never ever meant to be in direct competition with each other. A VW Golf R32 is an all around road carver with a 241hp 3.2l V6, all-wheel-drive, big wheels, big brakes and host of other performance minded features which makes it more than a roadster. At (241hp) the R32 is meant to be compared to cars such as the WRX STi (300 hp) and the Lancer EVO (271hp). All of which seem to have better numbers than the following roadsters. (not to distract from the fun of the following cars merely an observation)

The S2000 is a roadster however with an inline 4cyl 16V at 240 hp still a very powerful car as well. Although it retains the free spirit of a roadster it lacks one of the key pleasures that is so true to the roadster name and that missing entity is torque. The S2000 is meant to be compared to cars such as the TT, Z4, 350Z, G5, Boxter etc. Not only in terms of #'s but in terms of usage.

The real question is not which one would you choose but what are you looking for !?

You are too tall for the S2000, I didn't like sitting in them and I am only 6'. So you have an extra 2" on me. For some reason the people who make convertibles think everyone is short?

Have you tried looking at the Audi TT?

This is gonna sound really stupid but I'll admit it here; ever since the movie Legally Blonde 2 came out I can't help but not to think of the TT as a chick car whenever I see one. Same with a Miata; I've never seen a straight male own one. Didn't mean to offend any TT or Miata owners out there

I like cars with some balls under 3krpm, so I'd pick the VW, in fact, I am
I drove an S2000 and found it totally un-interesting to me - I already have a few motorcycles that are faster and nicer.
I don't want a car that I gotta drive around at 6k all day to get anywhere.

I looked at the WRX STi and thats pretty nice as well, but it looks like a fucking ricemobile with that huge ass spoiler.
The Mitsubishi EVO Lancer also has that same problem, but it is cheaper than the STi.
Spend some of that extra money to get the fucking spoiler taken off!

S2000 for the look but I have to agree, no low end torque Wish it had good power under 3000 RPM. Plus must have a good clutch that can take a beating. No garbage that wears out a 3000 Km

What year is Jetta?

Either way, like jact said turbo is one way to go but if you want alot of power your gonna have to get a big turbo (t4) and with a big turbo comes lag, and power is only made on the high end of the rpm range.
This creates a couple of problems and the most important being that driveability suffers to make HUGE hp numbers starting only at 3500+rpm which sucks ass to for driving on city streets.

You also will find yourself unable to control your car when that power is being made because traction will be a huge issue, you will most likely need a quaife differential at that point anyway to put down any decent amount of power.

What i would suggest is to get a supercharger kit from these guys.

I would also recommend stage 3

This will allow you to drive your car like a stock car practically with a power being distributed in a linear fashion instead of just a huge amount of power in shot like a big turbo would do.
It will also be alot less hassles maintenance wise...

Those kits are complete with custom ECU chip, pulleys, intercooler and piping and all that good shit.

I would get a set of Coilovers, upgrade the Brakes for sure for all the added power, and maybe a few bars to tighten up the chassis....i could go on an on but this should do for now.

Throw in some 18inch wheels to look good and you have yourself One helluva daily driver that will most likely smoke the doors of many hondas...s2000 or not

I've also driven most cars mentioned, INCLUDING a mk1 Elise, so here are my thoughts:

* Comparing an R32 to an S2000 is pointless - totally different driving experiences.

* Comparing an R32 with a Scooby WRX or Mitsubishi Evo - the R32 doesn't even come close.

* The only cars mentioned so far that are similar in driving experiences to a S2000 are the Elise and the 350Z - driving the 350Z or S2000 after an Elise is like comparing the rush from stamp collecting after going skydiving.

My advice would be test drive the following:

Honda S2000
Lotus Elise
Nissan 350Z
Mitsubishi Evo 8
Subaru WRX STi
VW Golf R32


and decide for yourself which one you prefer...

Or one other I've just remembered - if you're just looking for a car for the driving experience, and you can find one, see if you can track down a Caterham - the bike engined ones are the most extreme
