S2000 vs. VW Golf R32

I'm looking to buy a "weekend" car for myself in the $30,000 ~ $40,000 range. The two cars I'm really interested in are the Honda S2000 or the VW Golf R32. Anyone own either of these cars ? Could you tell me why you love it or hate it ? What other cars would you consider in that price range. Thanks in advance...

Candyman69 01-29-2004 03:20 PM

r32 for sure
4 motion
tons of low end torque
classy euro
more hp

s2k dont compare

skillfull 01-29-2004 03:21 PM

volks sucks
dont touch this with a ten foot pole :feels-hot

gornyhuy 01-29-2004 03:24 PM

I seem to remember that there are a few huge fans of the s2000, quiet for one... think he is a repeat buyer even.

I've had a jetta and a golf and both have been solid cars, but NOT worthy of being called "sportscar".

My sister's beetle had a short circuit in it. The damage came up to $7000. Took VW 3 months to just figure out IF they were gonna pay for it.

Finally she had to pay $1700 and the rest was covered by VW
3 months later

I'll never buy a VW

Depends for who, my sister's cute in her beetle
Still just the time it took for them to figure it out tells me not to do business with them.

Roald 01-29-2004 03:32 PM

R32 should be more fun driving allthough I think the S2000 looks better.

correct, here it is beside my new toy :)

http://catalog.com/uvlight/images/91..._and_S2000.jpg

good article from this summer, comparing the S2000 with the cars it was meant to be compared with - other two seater (more or less) convertible sports cars (namely the Z4, 350Z, Boxster and TT)...

KobyBoy 01-29-2004 03:48 PM

I like VW's. I used to own a Golf GTI when I was in school. All leather interior, nice sound system and it did haul on the highway also. I've never had any problems with that car and all the VW service I got from the dealship was nothing short of ourstanding. I'm sorry your sis had to go through what she went through Dildozer. Although it's true that I've never had an experience with the particular model she drives.
The VW R32 is really the only VW I would consider to be a sports car. Its lean, its mean and it's definately not just a grocery getter: http://www.europeancarweb.com/features/0311ec_hpagolf/

The S2000 looks like it might be a fun car too. It has power, awesome torque at high rev (the redline starts at 10,000 rpm in that car !), convertable and it would be the perfect beach car. The downside is that I'm not too crazy about the interior. It's a tad bit in the sparse side. When you look inside it's just plastic all over and the stearing wheel. Plus I'm 6"2' so I'm not sure if I could fit comfortable in it.

Mike-BP 01-29-2004 04:03 PM

S2000

Ross 01-29-2004 04:04 PM

I love the R32. It's an amazing machine.

Dude, I like you but you're clueless when it comes to talking about driving experiences ;)

Weekend car? Yeah lets see...VW econohatch vs. 2 seat convertible. Tough choice :1orglaugh

And why is it that I never see Golf R32s or GTI's out on the track? I do see lots of Vettes, Vipers, and oh yeah, S2000s. :winkwink:

bhutocracy 01-29-2004 05:04 PM

aww kevin's got an s2000... hit him up.

sixxxth_sense 01-29-2004 05:07 PM

R32 RULEZ than HONDA...

I'd take the R32 anytime over the S2000!!

Wiseman 01-29-2004 05:08 PM

Whats the VW look like?

Gateway69 01-29-2004 05:08 PM

I like my s2000, its fun esp up here in the hills.. great roads and the card handles really well.

"Honda Sportscar" is an oxymoron. Why limit yourself between VW and Honda??

wrong. it's the most pure sports car available under 40K, period (street legal). unless you count the Elise...

Platinumpimp 01-29-2004 05:13 PM

the R32 sounds very very nice and is as quick as the S2000.

I'd say go with the R32.

echodotcom 01-29-2004 05:15 PM

just go buy both of them .

Kicker 01-29-2004 05:16 PM

Honda:thumbsup

Do I detect that I think I do? I'm so on the fence about buying one and using it as a track car.

What do you mean by "most pure"?

The Infiniti G35 Sport Coupe is a nice alternative in the $30,000 price range (and it's faster) :)

hottoddy 01-29-2004 05:33 PM

Another for the R32. Awesome power, control, and versatility of a hatch.

http://www.infiniti.com/m/cma/i/veh/...5c_1_large.jpg

Infiniti G35:
MSRP: 32,450
Horsepower: 280 HP @ 6200
Torque: 270 lb-ft @ 4,800 RPM

Honda S2000:
MSRP: 32,800
Horsepower: 240 HP @ 7800
Torque: 162 @ 6500

Dildozer 01-29-2004 05:44 PM

I saw somewhere the G35 now has 4 wheel drive, but i think it's only for the 4 door.

The G35 coupe or the 350Z: definitely a fine choice

Fluid of Fuck Me 01-29-2004 05:46 PM

first off,
whoever said that honda's have no torque should really start looking up the factory numbers.

Everything being equal, here's how I would decide. You're going to get bored with the car eventually. Everyone does, you'll start working on it. Add a cool air intake, new injectors et et. This is where the honda shines.

You can pound out more horsepower and more torque for less money then any other kind of car right now with possibly two exceptions, WRX and the Evo.

Look to the rally and road racing circuits, WRX, EVO and S2000's are the vast majority of the placers. You'd think there was a reason why huh? :)

JSA Matt 01-29-2004 05:51 PM

the WRX STi is another fine choice in that range :)

quiet 01-29-2004 05:56 PM

silly comparison. the S2000 would eat the G35 alive on a track. and i really like the G35. but it's not a pure sports car in the same sense the S2000 is.

specs are not really what a sports car is all about, but here ya go:

G35:

0-60: 6 sec
0-100: 15.1 sec
1/4 mile: 14.6 sec

S2000:

0-60: 5.5 sec
0-100: 13.9 sec
1/4 mile: 14.1 sec

taken from fast-autos.net. of course if all you're concerned with is power, you can do it far cheaper. again, silly comparison. you should be comparing the S2K with the 350Z (the faster, sportier, and more powerful version of the G35). which it's beaten in every comparsion i've seen.

JSA Matt 01-29-2004 06:02 PM

This thread is talking about a "weekend car" not a race car... there is no way to win over a die hard fan like yourself, i'm just throwing up some nice alternatives :) You're right though, I should have used the 350Z instead of the G35.. I just like it more :)

i missed this post till just now. wrong again, it's actually quite a bit slower.

i don't feel like going into a long tirade of exactly what i mean by 'pure sports car' tonight... i've done it in the past here too many times already ;)

my 911 C4S is much quicker than my S2000, but i would not consider it as 'pure' of a sports car as the S2000. blah, blah.

Ic3m4nZ 01-29-2004 06:08 PM

I'd go with the s2000

We are talking stock cars right? I'm sure you got some pretty nice mods in that S2K :) Ahh forget it, I don't know nearly enough about the S2000 to argue with anyone... these are all damn good cars in my opinion.

quiet 01-29-2004 06:10 PM

what you should really do is try to test drive the cars you are considering. i've driven every car mentioned in this thread except for the Elise. best way to decide.

i'm talking stock. see specs i posted above. those are for unmodifed versions of each car. half a second ahead in the 1/4 is a long way ahead.

buddyjuf 01-29-2004 06:12 PM

dude why not get the Nissan 350Z? I LOVE that car :thumbsup
