How tragic.

Aren't hunters supposed to be wearing bright red or orange so that this kind of thing doesn't happen, though? My uncle used to take my cousin hunting from the time he was around 12 or so but he always made him wear an orange vest and a red hat.

Kinda like I don't feel sorry for anyone shot to death in their own home because they're too afraid to own and learn how to properly use a gun for self-defense.

I do have to agree here, though, that this father was a complete and total idiot. At the very least, he should have made damn sure of where his two sons were at all times. Basic safety gets ignored, bad things tend to happen.

Maybe its just the way this is being reported but it makes little sense.

Quote:
Investigators said that about 9:30 a.m., Plucknett asked his older son to see if he could see an animal moving in the woods. He couldn't, so he handed the .308 rifle to his dad. Thinking it was a hog, Plucknet fired one shot, hitting his son in the back of the head.
He asked the older son to see what was moving in the woods. The older son couldnt see what it was (obviously the younger son) so he handed the gun back to his dad (not wanting to shoot at something he cant see) so the dad fires blindly in the area of the movement???

What a fucking idiot. I feel bad for the family that the father was such an ass.

Its just that a country where guns are legal produces tons of deaths by guns and a country where its illegal doesnt.

You can bring up any excuse you want, orange jackets, learning how to shoot, self protection blah blah...but you cannot say im wrong.

The reason why someone has a gun to protected himself if because he knows theres someone else walking around with a gun as well.

Think before you post.

Once again, i dont care. Its the US and i dont live there. Simply dont bitch when someone dies of a gunshot.

i was in 7th grade and a friend of mine shot his brother. i knew both of them really well and i remember i never cried so much as i did the day i found out. that incident messed up my friend so badly that he ended up in a catatonic state and the doctors, at that time, werent sure if he would ever come out of it. on top of that, my friends mother killed herself.

all of this over a brother taking his sibling out and teaching him how to hunt (which i am very much against for various reasons) without parental supervision. this happen in the early 80's so the laws then arent what they are today.

very sad.

There's a difference between out lawing hand guns and out lawing hunting rifles.

Regular hand guns should be illegal except for the Police. But shot guns and hunting rifles are fine.

Most criminals don't use hunting rifles.

I dont want to sound like an asshole but they are obviously are NOT fine. And this guy just proved it once again. This is far from the first time something like this happened.
A gun is a gun, doesnt matter for what purpose it was bought.

Nope.

I you rather shoot deer and have people die because of it i coulnt care less.

Its funny how you defend losses of lives by saying "so we should stop hunting then"

Think about what you just said.

criminals RARLY use hunting rifles cause
a. they are too big to concel
b. they don't look as cool
c. it takes some skill to kill with a hunting rifle - much more than a handgun

it's the basic reason why gun deaths in canada are 1/10 that of the usa (percentage - nto total, adjusted for population difference).

there are JUST as many guns (percentage) in canada as the USA - but hardly any handguns and automatic weapons - it's all hunting rifles and shotguns here

*sighs*

If they outlaw the guns, the criminals will simply buy them on the black market.
Know what happens then? Criminals walk into a house confident that the victims in that house can't defend themselves. At the most, they'll have to fend off a parent with a baseball bat or a knife. No contest as long as they see that parent coming. They'll just shoot the parent.

Other countries have outlawed guns. Did it stop the killing? No. It simply raised the killing done by other means - like knives.
It's also raised the general crime rate since the criminals know the people don't have guns.

Read up on Victoria and its 300% rise in violent crimes since guns were taken away from the people.

Dude, ofcourse not every criminal will use hunting rifles for the reasons you mentioned, i know that. Im just saying some criminals will and death will keep on happening. Way less but it wont stop by simply banning handguns. Plus every now and then an idiot like the sniper last year will smoke too much crack and shoot some people.

We can argue forever and you can call me what you want but as long as guns are available, no matter what kind of guns, people will get shot. Period.

Now i cant wait for the next idiot who will say "cars kill as well" will show up. Please thing before you post.

Wait, youre saying guns should stay legal because making it illegal will result in more killing.

Don't say anything. Actually, instead of chanting your "get rid of guns" rhetoric, how about you go read some studies and statistics done where guns have been outlawed, where guns are allowed, and even where people are *required* to own a firearm (yes, there are such places).

You'll see the proof for yourself and then you'll either quit chanting that mantra or you'll just ignore it because you don't like to admit you're wrong. *shrug*

What utter crap. Go look up the statistics for handgun-killings here in western europe if you're so statistically-minded.

Just for Carrie:

Gunshot wounds inpact severely on the criminal justice as well as health care systems. Some basic statistics are important in understanding the magnitude and severity of the social and economic burden to the U.S.

In the U.S. for 1998, there were 30,708 deaths from firearms, distributed as follows by mode of death: Suicide 17,424; Homicide 12,102; Accident 866; Undetermined 316. This makes firearms injuries one of the top ten causes of death in the U.S. The number of firearms-related injuries in the U.S., both fatal and non-fatal, increased through 1993, but has since declined steadily.(CDC, 2001) However, firearms injuries remain the second leading cause of injury-related death in the U.S., particularly among youth (Cherry et al, 1998).

The number of non-fatal injuries is considerable--over 200,000 per year in the U.S. Many of these injuries require hospitalization and trauma care. A 1994 study revealed the cost per injury requiring admission to a trauma center was over $14,000. The cumulative lifetime cost in 1985 for gunshot wounds was estimated to be $911 million, with $13.4 billion in lost productivity. (Mock et al, 1994) The cost of the improper use of firearms in Canada was estimated at $6.6 billion per year. (Chapdelaine and Maurice, 1996)

The rates of firearms deaths in the U.S. vary significantly by race and sex. The national average is 11.3 deaths per 100,000 population. The highest rate is 41.6/100,000 for African-American males, more than double the rate of 16.2/100,000 for white males. For females in the U.S., the rate is 3.3/100,000. (CDC, 2000) In contrast, death rates from firearms for western European nations range from 0.1 to 0.5/100,000.

Firearms Death Rate (per 100,000) for Young Males in Selected Countries - 1993

The issue of "home defense" or protection against intruders may well be misrepresented. A of 626 shootings in or around a residence in three U.S. cities revealed that, for every time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were four unintentional shootings, seven criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides (Kellermann et al, 1998). Over 50% of all households in the U.S. admit to having firearms (Nelson et al, 1987). It would appear that, rather than beign used for defense, most of these weapons inflict injuries on the owners and their families.

First of all, most criminals do not possess handguns legally anyway.

Now i cant wait for the next idiot who will say "cars kill as well" will show up.
Why is this stupid?? Why is it that people think guns should be banned because people are killed accidentally? But not ban cars, which kill way more people than guns? Accidental deaths happen every year from guns, cars, stairs, and fucking choking on candy.

Get a fucking grip. Everyone wants the government to stay out of their business, but then they think the government should "protect all of mankind" from themselves.

Most of those deaths are suicide. They would have ended up dead on way or another. The gun really didn't have much to do with it.

How many of those murders were committed with LEGALLY OBTAINED handguns?

So, because less than 1000 people died using a product negligently, that means that responsible gun owners should be stripped of their right to own a gun?

With all due respect...you are the idiot!

Oh, I get it now. You are not smart enough to argue the legitamate points, so you just call people names, and blah, blah, blah.

I would be happy to listen to any VALID argument you may have, but I guess you don't have any.

Shit i have to comment on it:

Fact: Suicide 17,424 with the use of guns
Jenny's repsonse: The gun really didn't have much to do with it. They would have ended up dead on way or another.

This is easily the most idiotic thing i read all way.

With no respect whatsoever: you can't read a graph, or understand statistic. Go shoot yourself.

Um, I would really rather face a mugger with a knife than a mugger with a gun. At least if he has a knife, I can get out of range pretty darned easily. With a gun, you're never sure if you're out of range. Same with robbing a bank with a knife. Same with B&E'ing a house with a knife. A good dog outweighs a knife any day. So yes, I would rather the petty criminals have knives than guns. Criminals who make more money will always have money to spend on black market guns, but at least the crackheads will be restricted to knives and crap like that.
