Anyone use Extreme Rack for hosting?

I have just seen their deal of a dedicated on a 10Mb for only $399 a month with no setup fee and 24 hour support.

Anyone use them? What are they like? Seems a very good deal for tgp/mpg traffic etc.

They seem to be 100% cogent, or atleast their domain's IP is only announced via cogent. I'd shoot them off an email to ensure they are BGP4 over a few different providers, and that they don't rely on Cogent heavily, before throwing anything on their network that you want uptime for.

What is cogent? Is it a crap connection? Poor quality?

Cogent is poor quality bandwidth, you will end up with latency and if they go down your server goes down since there is no redundancy built into the network, I think they have had some downtime this week.

If you want a 10 mbps server with redundant providers and over quality bandwidth such as level3 hit me up on icq at 36837470, I can set you up for $650/mo, no setup fees, and no long term commits. Its more than the $400, but you'll have quality redundant bandwidth.

As liquidmoe said, it's cheap bandwidth. They also seem to pull the plug on providers that get a complaint or two, without trying to resolve the complaint first. Then there's the fact that if they only have a cogent line - there's no redundancy.

If you're looking for something cheap to get you started, it might work out - if you're serious about it and require uptime to keep your business thriving, you may want to inquire with them to ensure they have redundant links or look elsewhere. Feel free to contact us via e-mail for quotes, we're in Canada so if you're US based, you'll be able to enjoy the Exchange Rate benefits - not to mention the benefits of our quality providers and staff.

Regards,

The domain is on RackShack because our helpdesk system is on that server. If a client wants to put in a helpdesk request because they didn't know about scheduled maintenance - or if there's a DDoS caused outage; it wouldn't do us or them any good not being able to reach the server now would it?

If you're in Eastern Canada, feel free to contact us and we'll kindly give you a tour of our facilities in Halifax. If you're in Montreal, we can also arrange for a tour of our space at Peer1.

Makes me laugh that you apparently have 2 spots for hosting and dont even trust your network enough to host your own site...
You still have to get hosting with rackshack.

Network maintenance? You should advise your clients of that before hand... and If you have more then one server... then maintenance of a virtual server shouldnt affect your website or your help desk...

We have mailing lists to inform clients of planned outages, mind you, I can't really recall the last change that actually caused an outage other than a BGP flap.

If your parents ever told you "Save some money for a rainy day" - they were actually teaching you a valuable lesson that every business needs to take into account: Be prepared for the worst. We've always planned for the worst, incase it ever did happen, thankfully it never has. Doing so has gotten us to the point we are in today.

Speaking on your remark of doing maintenance on "1 server" shouldn't impact the rest - agreed. However, the changes I'm talking about are not on a server, they're on our core routers and switches, which indeed would impact all servers (I think the last headcount of our servers was somewhere near 700 in Halifax and about 200 in Peer1). The Peer1 space to us is very new, roughly about 1.5 months thus far. Considering we don't manage any of the routing for the Peer1 link, placing our webserver at Peer1 would most likely make more logical sense now and I'll make sure to tell the powers that be that it would indeed add credability to the domain name.

Thanks for your comments, let me know if you'd be up for the tours, the facilities and views of the Halifax harbour is fantastic.

Just face it, Extreme Rack is not at the top of their game...

Just check BetterBeUp they're the host with the most minutes of downtime.

Why go with a provider that has the most downtime when there are so many others out there that CAN provide a stable connection.
