Is a $60 reboot fee reasonable?

One of my machines appears to have died for the first time in about 18 months, and the hosting company wants $60 for an immediate reboot, or they can reboot it during business hours for nothing.

Is this a reasonable fee? The odd thing is that they say they have their own data centre, so I guess the 24/7 NOC must be located elsewhere... or maybe they just think that desperate customers will pay the reboot fee regardless.

The plan I'm on is a very low priced and specced server, $35/mo for a P133 (yes, Pentium 133 ) with 64Mb RAM, 2Gb HD and 5Gb of transfer. I'm using it as a backup name server, but after the mention of the $60 fee I'm starting to wonder whether it's even worth it... may as well just get a fully blown server elsewhere and do something else useful with it.

Thats insane. Many companies will charge you for "hands & eyes" service. In other words if they have to describe what your machine is doing and act on your behest to enter commands and such but none that I know of charge a fee to reboot.

We currently use Candid Hosting and I've called them at 4 in the morning to do a reboot. No problem!

Some of the more professional companies offer remote console access through an interface other than your computer so you could actually interface with the machine just like you were sitting at the console. We used to get it through BBNPlanet (aka Genuity which is now owned by Level3) but then again our colo fee was something like $600 a month for won server so it wasn't cheap.

I would look elsewhere if I were you.

Is $60 reasonable for a re-boot?
My answer would be.......

NO!

them they are bending you over and not even having the courtesy of giving you a reach around.

I wonder if the reboot fee varies depending on the plan or customer... to be fair, I probably make that host next to nothing. We're talking about a $35/mo dedicated server here.

I did express my 'surprise' at the fee in an email, so it will be interesting to see what their response is.

Speaking as a host, I think it's retarded. Reboots are free, and always should be free - even if the reboot requires a kernel boot string entered, or FSCK - it's still ~1 -> 10 minutes of time that should be free. Most hosting company's would give you a remote reboot port so you could even do it yourself if they don't have 24/7 staff.

I'd look elsewhere - contact us via our email in our sig if you want pricing from us.

Pfft - you can get a much better deal than reflected...

$60 for a reboot would piss me off enough to go through the hassle of moving. Just means the people you are hosting with are amateurs or not treating their customers seriously.

If you are happy with everything else that has company has done for you, pay the $60. Then talk it over wit the head of their sales team and see if you can get it credited.

Reflected offers remote KVM/remote console like you're talking about at hardly any cost to each of our customers. We also offer an optional remote reboot power port for your box as well. But regardless, we have employees on staff 24/7 to take care of these sort of things..... just so you know.

If I didn't know better, it sounds like you're using Havenco
www.havenco.com

Guess they have to get someone out there with the rowboat...

No, that is way too much money for a reboot, you have to find someplace with 24/7 staff.

That's insane..I've never heard of that before..what you might wanna do is have your admin or someone that knows what they are doing create a page where you can go and reboot remotely. We have that on our servers.

I paid a one time fee of 50.00 to have a " remote reboot" port.

I can reboot my servers in NJ from my home or anywhere else: no more fees ....

60.00 for one reboot...LOL
