Unforeseen things when getting a second dog?
I've been really wanting a second dog and I'm wondering if anyone else ended up getting a second dog, and things they've run into? Thanks.

biggest risk is when u get another is that the first one doesn't accept it... but you'll have to give it time to be sure.

really depends on the first dog and the second dog ... hehe that made sense *shakes her head*
Its best to introduce them on 'neutral territory' so that dog #1 doesn't feel like its 'territory' is being invaded. Not all dogs will accept a second one in the family, but on the other side of the coin, some will accept a second dog without blinking an eye.

If your dog is older and used to having things her way, don't do it.
If you have a very young dog , it will be okay. |

Yah, I've thought of those two things. y current dog loves puppies and caring for everyone so I don't see her having a problem, she'll love it so long as I give her the same attention. I'd also get a similar mix so their personalities will be partially the same. I'm hoping that's all that I'll have to watch out for..
Thanks.. Cheers, Matt |

when you ad more than one dog into your house the hierarchy has to change, or at least is upset. The only time i have been able to bring a inside dog into the house when there is another adult canine already living there is if the new dog is a puppy then the older dog can bitch down the puppy without blood being drawn.
I am no expert on it though so this is only my experiences, the time it worked was with a young female pit and the older a female roc. I had tried other time when i found a dog in an unfortunate situations but the older roc would not back down and there was always a bad experience |

I don't see Kylie getting too jealous, so long as she has access to the puppy as well. She is a year and a half old herself and is very tolerant of spastic puppies so I don't think that should be a problem. Thanks for mentioning that though anidifranco (I copy/pasted your name Cheers, Matt |

Ok, there has to be a boss, so it is always best to pick your first dog so they don't feel put out.
In the "dog pack" everything is about height and "first". So when you bring your second dog into the "pack" the newbie eats LAST, goes out the door LAST, comes in LAST and until things get settled, your first dog gets the lap, the new dog gets the floor. Once the pack order is established your first dog knows they are still top dog, the second dog realizes he is loved but he is not top dog and settles into place. Size doesn't really matter. My Chihuahua ruled over my Goldens. The Goldens accepted it. Good luck! |

I was worried about this same thing a year ago. We wanted to take in a puppy but already had a 13 year old dog who never really had any inter action with other dogs. Plus, my 13 year old is as mean as a snake.
I had nightmares about bring our new puppy (Jersey) home and Sadie (older dog) eatting it lol. When the time came to bring Jersey home, we took both dogs up to a school field to meet. Sadie didn't want to have anything to do with Jersey. Then we took both home. For the first month, Sadie wanted nothing to do with Jersey or us. She would come to us when called but then went and laid in the kicthen. Jersey would chase Sadie around a little bit but Sadie would just jump on the couch since Jersey couldn't get up there yet. Its been a year now since we have brought Jersey home and I'm happy to say they are best buds now. They play with each other and everything. I think Sadie just needed some time to get used to having another dog in the house. I believe it was the best decision we ever made. Unfortunately, we just found out yesterday Sadie has cancer. So we really don't know how long we will have her with us. But thanks to Jersey, she is still bouncing around like a puppy. Well, that is just my experience. Thought I would share.

I have a year and 2 month old German shepherd, and I bought another shepherd who's 2 months and a few days now.
Their both males, which tends to cause a few problems, they are much more territorial. Since my older dog is neutered and as my younger one matures there will be some jealousy involved especially until the younger one gets neutered. Other than that they are great. Fight for 10 mins and sleep for another 10. It's non stop, but worth it. Puppy training seems so much easier with an older dog to show the little one right from wrong. |

Thanx for the comments guys. They truly are great dogs and I dont know how I could live without them.
My eldest has saved me from some messy road rage fights, people get out of their car see the dog and get right back in If your looking to get a second dog go for it, at first it's a shitload of responsabilitties but once they settle it's better than you would expect it. |
