:mad Fucking Dell!!

When I got my system I made sure I let em know I want my system to be able to be upgraded. Well my wife bought me Dark Age of Camelot and my "integrated" video card isn't supported by the game and from what I understand with an integrated system I can't update my graphics card!!

Dell!!

I was gonna play that game and relax for quite a while this holiday weekend and now I fucking can't. Bastards.

Why can't you upgrade it? Is it a laptop or desktop?
You can disable the onboard video in BIUS and add a new AGP card as long as you have a AGP port.

Shouldn't have a problem then. Open it up just too make sure you have AGP port which you should. Or see if any of your manuals talk about it.

Yep, it sounds like you just didn't do your homework and bought on the cheap. I've never heard of a Dell that wasn't upgradeable.

I have built all my PC's except two...

Ya oughtah learn the mechanics of hardware and configurations. Once ya do that you will wonder why in the fuck it costs 3K plus to buy a state of the art PC when you can build from scratch and spend less than 2k for even a better machine.

I must admit...
I was a hardware junkie first at age 17. Never lost the love for Hardware

These are pretty bad ass for anyone into gaming:

http://falcon-nw.com/fragbox.asp

You sure there isn't an AGP slot in there? That must have been one hell of a cheap ass computer if there isn't one.

Nothing wrong with a Dell. I have one, my last company had over 1,000+ of them, no problems with them and if there ever was they shipped me a replacement part no questions asked. Back to the original question, I take it you got a desktop machine and not a workstation. They are the cheapies of Dell but all is not lost. Just because you have an integrated video chip doesn't mean that it's not upgradable. All you need to do is go into your BIOS, disable the integrated video card and and set it to use the AGP slot (you did get an AGP slot with the machine right ?). If you didn't get an AGP slot them you need to get a PCI video card which is going to be slower then their AGP counterparts. Now, after you've set and saved the BIOS turn the machine off, slap the new video card in and turn your box back on. You should be using your newly installed video card and not the integrated one. Next time when you get a Dell make sure you get a workstation class machine. Enjoy...

Someone just told me that with an integrated system I wouldn't be able to upgrade. I'm not techie at all. I know I can expand my memory as there is one open slot for that. I know that's not it. Is it the area on the motherboard that has places to put things like where my cable modem gets plugged in in the back of the computer?

I actually really love this computer. I had nothing but problems with my Gateway computer before. Damn thing drove me nuts. Got this Dell and almost never have any problems.

I just assumed since I was able to play Everquest with my current video set-up I would be able to play DAoC as well.

We all knwo what happens when you assume.

You welcome You can always upgrade the machine with the integrated peripherals but your system performance will not be the same as other custom machines. Generally the Dell "cheapies" were built for people who are not power users and are not going to upgrade them so they don't use high-end comonents in them. Whatever the cheapest thing Dell can buy from a manufacturer that is somewhat reliable will go into those computers. You can put in a more powerful video card into it but you will most probably not get the same framerates as you would get from a custom built box that has a higher FSB (Front Side Bus). Next time you order a Dell make sure you choose from their workstation products. They have very nice components in them that are pretty descent for gaming. Or if you have some serious $$$ to burn you could go for their gaming system but I don't know much about that. Or if you want to go over the top crazy you could get an Alienware or a Falcon gaming box.

Thanks for that bit of info as well. Much appreciated. I like my Dell quite a bit but just got pissed when I realized I wasn't gonna be able to play the game right away.

Here's a pic of an AGP slot. If you don't have one, don't even bother getting a PCI video card, because I can almost guarantee you that you are going to have more problems running any new game on a PCI video card than you would on your integrated card.

Just go to any video card manufacturer's web site and see what they currently offer. I know of none that produce PCI video cards anymore. If they do, they are not meant to be gaming video cards.

Actually you have a few choices in PCI cards. This article might help.

http://www.sudhian.com/showdocs.cfm?aid=445&pid=1595

They are all crappy video cards though compared to any of the AGP cards out there.

Pisser.. I was at Best Buy looking around and the girl there said I could use a PCI video card assuming it was supported by DAoC but the performance wasn't going to be the best.

The only reason Dell sucks is they use propriotary connectors for the power to the motherboard. So you can't switch motherboards without buying it from Dell. Or power supplies.

Anyone ever heard of Jeff Levy on KFI Saturdays at 2-5pm... fucking moron....

The other day he says something like, "Yeah, that blue screen usually means you have a virus, get BackUpPro from Stomp, and make sure you download the latest AV update."

A blue screen means you are running windows 98 or ME... ;)

Another one, "If you think that you are going to save money building your own computer, think again. Those major computer makers get their parts in such large quantities that they cost them nothing to put one together for you."

Its the funniest shit you ever heard... They kicked him out of the morning and replaced him with some female chef talk bullshit... that's gotta bite...

What were we talking about again? Ohh, Dell...
