That would only be true if the first posting made was "postid 1" (it wasn't) and if deleted posts counted (they don't).

I used to have a site with vbulletin, and I could look in the mysql database and see the postid of deleted posts

Right, the post id is unique and never gets reused. But what happens to that "total post count" variable for a forum when a post is deleted...
