That would only be true if the first posting made was "postid 1" (it wasn't) and if deleted posts counted (they don't).

I used to have a site with vbulletin, and I could look in the mysql database and see the postid of deleted posts :)

Right, the post id is unique and never gets reused. But what happens to that "total post count" variable for a forum when a post is deleted... :Graucho
