So has DirectNIC tried to jack any of your expired domains?

I was just speculating and waiting for a currency drop before renewing some domains I own there. DirectNIC being the credible solid stand up people they are I'm sure if they said 40 days for a drop its 40 days. Been letting some go over the past few years and its always been at least 40 days if not more.

What do you know, at day 30 my good names show up as registered to InterCosmos Media Group.

Well I managed to get them back, sure its my fault for letting them expire and the gamble with currency exchange.

Still, It's pretty fucking unnerving to have any good collection of worthwhile adult domains with a registrar that is "in the adult business" as you keyboard champs so eloquently put it.

Don't gamble with your domains if they are important for you.

We had alot of storm damage this summer that our and the neighbors insurance companies are currently fighting over, so we had to let some drop. Had to fix the roof ya' kno! lol Windows are nice when they HAVE glass in them etc etc. Freaking 60 ft trees are heck on houses. lol Luckily we have 12" solid brick outside walls. 9mm's don't even go thru them. ;-)

Now Directnic seems to think we have to send them a CHECK for 180 some dollars in order to get them back from the list. Hmmm, we're going to complain to ICANN today or tomorrow. Never heard of such BS.

We never have had a problem with them in ANY way previously, but to hand them 180 bucks in check, OR wire (no cc's accepted) is pure hoo doo.

We ALSO have never heard of PAYING to get them back except to re-up them. If they reg'd them themselves... Hmmm

If it actually expired then its fair game for everyone, technically speaking.

Find out who the domains are really registered to first. If it's InterCosmos Media Group then yes, they decided to keep your domains enstead of releasing them. They may have them listed on DomainApex.com or DirectNICs massive collection of domains it decided to keep and sell.

Posting this here is more likely to get a solution than an ICANN complaint. ICANN allows these registrars to act with impunity and are quite comfortable with the likes of VeriSlime (not to say that DirectNIC is anywhere near as evil as that).

ICANN usually just sees all of this as an opportunity to extort money from you (ie, like a UDRP). They will gladly accept your money and profit from their own incompetence and lack of direction.

If you dont pay for it by the due date, technically they can do whatever they want with it from that day on.

DirecNIC does not take peoples domains, even when they expire. I had my top guy look into it, and he is going to post the explaination.... Bottom line is it was HIS fault, "Suckitbitch" made the mistake.

I am amazed at how many people come out on GFY and post patently wrong information about DirectNIC, and blame us for their mistakes.

I hope this guy posts an apology with as much fire and zeal as his original slanderous post.

DirectNIC has 24/7 customer support - This could have all been handled with an e-mail or phone call, and save everyone a lot of embarassment.

Well Monte, Manager of customer support could not log in, I guess he has to be approved on GFY... so he sent me what he was going to post. So read below:

************************************************** *****************************************

I just wanted to try to shed some light on the Expiration Date vs. Redemption Period topic. On 28-Dec-2002, ICANN instituted a new policy in order to standardize the time period a domain is held by a registrar after expiration. At present, the central registry for .com and .net domains has implemented this. Registries for the other TLDs are expected to do the same.

Once a domain expires, it goes into "Registrar Hold" status. This period runs from the date of expiration through 40 days after the expiration date. During this time, the domain will not resolve and may be renewed at the same price. The domain will then have to go back through the normal propogation time before it resolves again.

After the 40 day "Registrar Hold" period, the domain goes in a "Redemption Period". This period lasts for 30 days. During this time, the domain remains under the control of the registrar. The governing registrar can get the domain renewed during this period at a significantly higher rate by filling out a number of forms and submitting them to the central registry. Because of the higher rate charged to the individual registrars and the amount of micromanaging of the renewal process of the domain, a higher rate must be charged for this process.

At the end of the 30 day "Redemption Period", the domain goes into a "Pending Delete" status which can last up to five days. During this period the registrar has no control over the domain and is simply waiting for the central registry to make the domain available to the public.

So, to recap, if a domain goes into a Redemption Period status, there is a thirty day period for the domain owner to realize it, send in the payment, have the payment clear, then for the registrar to fill out the necessary forms to have it be reactivated before it goes to "Pending Delete" status. This is why we would much rather have people renew their domains before they expire, or at least before they get to "Redemption Period" status. This save everyone a great deal of time, effort, and money.

Hopefully this has addressed your concerns. Always feel free to contact us through our online Trouble Ticket System with any further questions you have regarding our practices or policies.

Sincerely,

Monte White
directNIC Support Manager

Damn Mike, I been giving you my money all these years? I had no clue you guys were part of that.

Shit man the only reason I stuck with DirectNIC for so many years is because of there location. ;)

Learn new shit everyday.

Awesome, Ive never had ANY problems with DirectNIC and have recommended tons of friends, both webmasters and dumb band owners to register through DirectNIC, never any problems.

Top notch and always handled anything I questioned professionally.

Im glad to have found this out.

Hey Fletch, we definately appreciate your support. I wish I could take credit for directNIC....

In reality am a small % partner in DirectNIC. The success, great product, and great customer service all comes from our great team that Sig put together.

I few of the old timers might remember Sig....

It just drives me nuts when people make threads like this....

Next time you make it back to NO, lets grab a drink or 10....

Mike, do you happen to have a phone number or email contact to someone in DirectNIC's legal department? I have a problem with someone who stole one of our domains despite having our account having high security settings and the person I've been dealing with (Jim Macallum) seems to be taking his merry time while we've lost a valuable domain.

I only have a few domain names with directnic, but there support and easy process for customers makes them a winner in my book.

when we stopped doing domain registrations for customers a year or so ago, we sent everyone to dnic.

I am competition to DirectNIC, but I can WITHOUT A DOUBT attest to the fact that they WILL NOT screw you. Sig and the guys at DirectNIC are some of the most professional, ethical people I know.

This is just another example of why it is important to be sure you try to work out any percieved differences with your vendors before you go public.....you might find out that the mistake is on you!!

Just my
