What percent of your Online checks get Returned?

A friend of mine said he was dropping checks, because most of them get returned.

What percent of your online checks get returned and with what company?

CCBILL?

Roughly a quarter of our check signups are returned.

I stopped taking checks, actually I called ccbill yesterday about those dang checks. I took another shot at the checks a couple of month ago (after removing them last year)

I had a shit load of returns, so I called to aske WTF. They told me these are checks who bounced. Now these guys had access.

I removed all the check links - Fuck those guys!!!

almost 30% bounce (if not more)

Using Ibill, and for the past 2 months check returns are at exactly 33.33%

But good checks do tend to rebill well. So it's a real quandry.

We stopped using checks. and sales have not changed at all. I think those with checks also have cc cards and then use them in stead (the honest ones)

the others are just cheaters.

We use achdebit for checks and we are very happy with them. They scrub more carefully and will put people in collections for writing bad checks.

i would love to know how netbilling does it since it is impossible the way all banks are set up.

i noticed in multiple affiliate programs that on average about 35% of checks come back returned.
some of the third party check processors like electracash.com are pretty good at scrubbing out people that are bad, but it still isnt great.

Hi,

Our average for mainstream is less than 5% returns and about 20% for adult. It is important to offer good scrubbing options such as "Starchek" and "Experian" for online checks since you cannot get a real time auth from the accountholder's bank. I know a few of the popular companies such as ACHdebit, Electracash and ourselves offer these verifications, and others do not.

Please contact our sales department for more information and pricing. You will be quite pleased with what we offer.

We use Electracash, and since than we have seen a huge decrease in returned checks, we are very happy with Electracash, I also hear some great things about achdebit, thinking about trying them out as well.

We use Electracash as well and they are definetly alot better than the 3rd party processors for checks. I pray for the day when checks are instantly verified without any fraud, lol.

here is the amazing part about checks with achdebit.com

after about 10 months of no new sign ups
CC revenue is about 10% of what it was.
ACH is about 45% of what it was.

ACH reccurs like crazy.

If you want to reduce check returns, there are many different things you can do. It's all a matter of how far you want to take it.

For instance, you may want to validate via email prior to acceptance.

You can use a product like Experian where you can assess consumer credit worthiness and information accuracy (including SSN).

You can validate account numbers with StarCheck (where applicable).

And, you can even do a microdeposit (like paypal) to validate the account holder.

Obviously, some of these will limit throughput and some will totally take away the impulse purchase, so you have to do the math and see what works best for your risk threshhold and application.

Most importantly and given the credit card environment, you absolutely should accept checks. There are 100 million people in the US that have a checking or savings account that DO NOT have a credit card.

Maybe you have to be on a larger scale to measure it, but I believe not accepting checks is leaving money on the table. How can the biggest programs out there accept checks and make it work while others cannot? Why are some of the bigger programs promoting checks as their first option.

There are several companies in this thread that provide great ACH processing and you should open an account with everyone of them and see what works for you.

I run a couple of small sites with similar content... one is an established site with traffic arriving from bookmarkers, SEs, and various personal sites. The other gets traffic mainly from TGPs. The first gets relatively few check signups, but around 80% of those are good. The second gets a lot more, and it's the opposite: 20% are good, 80% are returned. I still believe that there are habitual fraudsters who use TGPs as a method of finding the latest site to check out for free.

An option to let checks clear before a surfer gets access is the best way.

SGS, ACH Debit supports this. It is slightly less effective than the microdeposit because it may be a valid account but unauthorized. Both methods hurt the impulse purchase.

Out of curiosity, how many business days do you let go by before you are willing to assume the ACH will not be returned?

25% to 30% bounce with CCBill, still a very good deal as about half the customers using checks don't have CC or are maxed out on them.

Also some customers share a CC with the wife as they don't want her so see the charge, but they balance the checkbook.

My Globill bounce check rate was only about 10%.

All you guys and gals hesitant to accept checks consider this...

ACH Debit will do your first 30 days of check processing FREE!

After that 30 days, we will look at the numbers and you can decide whether to keep going.

How's that for a deal?

First, your percentages are not even close in the worst case scenario.

Second, you obviously have not read a single word I have written.

Best of luck to you, though!

i find about 1/3 of them bounce as well.

the part that sucks is you get nailed on a transaction fee in and out on a bounced check

SleazyDream,

We only charge a transaction fee if the check is good. We do not charge a return fee.

Check out http://www.achdebit.com/sales/facts.html

I think it will make sense!

Not charging a return fee is the least you could do when 50% to 60% and more of your "product" is being returned unpaid, after we have given away access to our site for several days!

Suggest you get a better handle on your systems before trying to pass it off as a viable alternative

Best of luck to you too!

I've also given up on checks. Perhaps in the future I'll give them a try again.. but right now, they don't amount to that many sales, and the returned checks are much higher than my chargebacks.
