Best Soccer Player in History?

Who in your opinion is the best Futbol player in History?

imo Pele was a complete soccer player, but Maradona and Johan Cruyff were artistic and joyful to watch. Franz Beckenbauer in the other hand was amazing in his position as well attacking...

Johan Cruyff for sure.....best skilled and charismatic player
also not just an artist with a ball but also a very tactical team
player.....A Legend with a vision.

I think that most of you chose Pele, because you think you should have. How many of you saw a whole game of him? I know I didn't.

Pele was the complete centre forward but Im not sure if he was as good an all round footballer as Best, Cruyff or Maradona.

Another great centre forward who I would mention would have to be Marco Van Basten. IMO the real star of the great Dutch team of the late eighties & a real tragedy that he had to give up due to injury

Zidane is 2nd to none today. No doubt about that.

Also, can anyone tell me why Michael Laudrup never won any footballer of the year awards???

Lazio, Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Ajax Amsterdam.
That's FUCKING impressive!

I think maybe only Ronaldo can compete with his CV:
Inter, PSV, Real Madrid, Barcelona... I'm missing one right?

I saw him play twice in real. Once in 1966 and then in 1972 I think, plus numourous times on the TV.

He was head and shoulders above Maradona and better than Cruyff. Neither were as good as George Best, if he had played for England he would of been in that list. He would have been second, he destroyed defenders.

Beckenbauer was good and solid and very good at the back and going forward. But not in the same league as Pele, Best and Cruyff.

None of the modern players come anywhere near them because it's now too organised and disciplined for the individual to shine as much, defenses are more organised as well.

Pele for sure. Not only was he a class act on the field, but off the field as well.

Maradona was brilliant, but his "hand of god" bullshit in 86 was not classy, especially if you are English. The whole coke head shooting BB guns at journalists thing further tarnished his career.

I saw Pele past his prime and Maradona during his prime. It is my firm belief that Pele was the better of the two day to day.

Both sucked at defense.

But...

I still voted for Maradona in this poll. He is the most gifted of the bunch. His second goal against England in Mexico 86 is still the most precious example of brilliance ever crafted.

BTW, the Big Three are Pele, Maradona, and DiStefano.

DiStefano with Real Madrid owned Europe in the 50s & 60s (10 Euro Championships).

George Best - although I am slightly biased. How Beckenbauer is on your list is beyond me - Bobby Moore was a far better player in the same position (although I wouldn't have him on the list ). I'd also agree with DiStefano as being one of the greats who should be on the list.

George Best might have been the greatest but self destructed with booze, drugs and women from an early age.

It's a stretch to pick anyone other than Pele.

Johan Cruyff was facing some of the best european soccer teams of all the time. On the other hand, if you exclude the WC, Pele was dealing mainly with brazilian soccer teams. Brazilian teams were and they still are hard, but their level is much lower than the one of europeans.

Cruyff played in '70s were the defense was much more complicated than in '50s and '60s when Pele was the big star.

This sounds like a joke to me.

Pelé was ellected in 1980 "The Athlete of The Century" (not just the football player, but the athlete); the voters certainly knew Cruyff, Backenbauer, di Stefano and all the others who played before Pelé (including all Olympic heroes).
Maradona himself recognized how far down he was from Pelé; all the above mentioned stars also bowed to Pelé. The man scored over 1,300 goals, and he retired from serious football at age 30 (he played in the USA for a few years just for the $$$); he was direct responsible for three World Cups (you certainly watched the goals he did in Sweden when he was aged 17); to date, he retains all the records in Brazilian statistics (was his team weaker? Santos - the name of his team - won several tournaments against Real Madrid, Milan, whatever the best European teams in the 60s).
Every now and then we younger Brazilian hear stories about him: 1) Santos was playing in another country, referee sends Pelé off; the crowd yells, the referee is dismissed, Pelé is called back to continue playing
2) A war between two African countries was temporarily halted, because Santos was going to play over there; only condition for the cease fire: Santos would have to play in both countries
3) Pelé was about to score his 1,000th goal, and went to play in a small city; match is on, Pelé would score, a defense man prevents the goal; next day, the defense is fired for, because of him, the city didn´t enter the History of football
4) Pelé met more Kings and Presidents than most anyone; Elizabeth made him Knight of Britain; the Pope bowed to him

Is there any doubt that Michael Jordan is the best basketball player ever? Likewise, there is no doubt that Pelé is the best football player ever.
