These guys are slick. My friend bought a bargain bin machine from them for like $200. Hosting 100 a month for TONS of bandwidth.
He was EXTREMLY happy with their professional and SPEEDY customer service. They all hang out in IRC, too! |

I'm moving everything from candid to rackshack! Almost done... much better uptime, smoother, faster, cheaper etc...
Easier to manage, no more paying tech support for their own fuckups! ![]()

If you know how to manage your own server (ensim makes it a little easier), then go for it. good bw for a decent price. if ur doing heavy tgp or traffic then you might want to look at a step above a celeron server.
Be careful though. if you use their system to transfer domains, they charge you $20 a pop, and some other services have hidden costs. You also need to keep up with the latest patches and security fixes, otherwise your box will be attacked/hacked within several months. Rackshack is also very poor at handling DOS attacks. Their solution ... unplug ur box for a few days or until you threaten to come over there with a shotgun unless they plug you back in. But generally as a cheap host with a ton of BW, you can't go past em.

I've had two boxes with Rackshack for over a year. My experience has been positive. But you MUST be able to do your own admin.

In fact, do a tracert on any of their servers, and compare it with your hosting company or any other on this board...and you will see that they have a fantastic network with multiple bw providers. I've tried many of the others on this board...and Rackshack beats them all...no contest!! 5 servers with rackshack...no downtime for over 300 days now. And a good percentage of their customers agree with this statement..."Rackshack is top notch"! |

its funny how ppl love to beat up rackshack...
1) Downtime: They do not go down, ive been there for more than 1½ year now, have a whole lot of serves, and have had less than 20 mins downtime ALL IN ALL. 2) Cogent: They do NOT give you cogent. They are fully BGP'ed and you will ONLY see cogent in a trace if cogent is the nearest and fastest line. Actually most of their blocks do not even have cogent in the mix anymore. 3) Support: Servers are unmanaged, so if you are fucked, well - then you are fucked. But reboots and minor things are done VERY fast, and they actually even have phonesupport. ![]()

Rackshack is in fact a horrible choice unless you know exactly what you're getting yourself into. I have pulled our 10 meg pipe there and moved it to Webair, but I'd take just about anybody over Rackshack.
If you trace TO rackshack you might see some sort of neat BGP system. Try tracing OUT of rackshack. Cogent. Score one for Lensman. Why do they do this? Simple. IT FOOLED YOU! You thought they were selling you real bandwidth, but as soon as you buy into their system, THAT's when you find out you've been had. Maybe if you're really lucky you can hit their Williams or Time Warner backbone. Have fun! Anyone who is claiming 100% uptime in the past year with rackshack is mistaken. About a year ago as I recall they had a fiber cut in their backyard and 100% of their connectivity went dead. From what I was told, this outage affected everybody. This lasted for hours. So if you're claiming 100% uptime, you're wrong. Their support is pathetic. Even if you admin your own boxes you still are a victim of their support. They once blocked us out of our own boxes while we were doing a mirroring backup and refused to let us back in until the day crew came in. Try speaking to an actual support rep there instead of the monkey that answers the phone to tell you to open a ticket. You will not be able to get anyone that knows anything. We even had SIX DAYS STRAIGHT of downtime. They don't care and they don't issue credits. Read the terms and conditions there - 30 day cancel policy, 150 dollar fee if you complain to your credit card company, plus they threaten to sue you in Texas if you chargeback. To sum up, if you don't want to be in business, go with rackshack. If you do want to be in business, go to a real provider. |

2) I just did 5 traces FROM the server - and i didnt see ANY cogent in there. Here is a few of them:
3) Yes, the support and refund policy isnt as good as many of the more expensive hosts out there. I have always found that rackspace's "fanatic support" is the best one out there, but yes, the price is 3x of rackshack. 4) And yes, you need to be able to admin your servers - otherwise Rackshack is not the place for you. I use 3 sometimes 4 different hosts for my dedicated servers, and have done so for years. Rackshack is not the cheapest one of them - but their network/uptime is very acceptable, and has been improving to become very good the last 6 months. I am not saying they are the PERFECT host, but its a very very good network, I pay 259/mo for for a Dual XEON with 2 73gb scsi disks and 1200gb of bandwidth, and I havent had any issues. ![]() ![]()

boourns, i had a rackshack box, they did not setup my bandwidth monitoring correctly it was not tracking right so on the last day of the month they decided to add 1000 gigs of trasnfer and ask me to pay up how nicely
![]() i am always looking for a good host still, i personally hate fucking linux, i have always been a freebsd guy. so ya. just stay way bud. go with lensmen. so what you wann pay 100 bux for 700 gigs of traffic? pay 99 bux a month for your box to be unplugged, shitty support , site going down. or do you want the big guy lensmen. with top notch bandwidth, with adult sites on that network that you know wont go down. think twice. I have made mistakes in my hosting before. I have gotten screwed when i got listed on the hun they pulled my site. It sucks dick. think about it. my thoughts.

A couple of weeks ago I got a dedicated server with Rackshack.net. So far no issues with downtime or server problems. I had a tech friend of mine adjust some dns settings before moving into the box but it was only a few adjustments.
Tech support has always replied within a few hours of placing a ticket and are very helpful.

Zorgman , that has been my experience too. Rackshack are fine.
It seems to me that if you scratch beneath the surface of alot of the disinformation in this thread you'll find people who have an interest in saying Rachshack are bad (or that other hosts are better). The Cogent claim staggers me, I'd like to see some evidence of these claims. Regardless, I can only go on experience and it's been all good! |

1) I use them and am pretty happy about their cheap servers and bandwidth.
2) Don't order any server with Ensim or Plesk if you don't know what that is or don't need it. Order a server with plain Linux OS. 3) You have to know to handle your server yourself. Don't rely on Rackshack. 4) Install your own firewall and DNS on that server. 5) Get your RedHat membership to keep your software up to date.

I love the concept of buying from Rackshack, beautifully cheap etc...
But critically I wouldn't trust them with my business - too much extra hassle. Look at Rackspace.com, fanatical support sounds a little naff - but you get account mangers, backup account managers, technical contacts, fuck knows what else - who get this, actually know what they're talking about. |

For me RackShack is far and away the best isp. I've had servers there for over a year. I monitor my servers 24x7 and I would say in 12 months I have had maybe two 15 minute periods where I was down.
And maybe about a 2 or 3 minute outage once a month or so. If you followed the events with their fire recently, this is one super professional organization way above any of their peers. Don't underestimate the fact that its unmanaged though - managing a Linux server long term is a very daunting task, and many RackShack customers eventually come to grief. If you never patch it there is a good chance your server will be broken into eventually. But if you are a propeller head like me or at least can rent one, they rock. I DONT WANT any morons logging into my server or trying to help me, thats the whole point. Rackshack doesn't have any passwords to my server, and that is just how I like it. My former isp (he has about 1000 clients) gave me all the same scare story when I switched. Last I heard he was looking into Rackshack. It cheaper then building your own data center and buying servers, so I expect a lot of isps will start using them, hundreds already are. |

I love my Rackshack box. Been there for a short time and can do nothing but rave so far. Managing the box on your own isn't too difficult. I've had some help from support and from my partner in the matter, but so far it hasn't been anything I haven't been able to accomplish.
I've dropped three trouble tickets (1 - reboot, 2 - add domains to their DNS) and all were addressed within 30 minutes. I haven't experienced any downtime and am considering setting up another few boxes with them as well. |

And, almost on a daily basis, I run run speed tests on a test page on each of my servers. Using tracert's programs, this measures the actual speed to download the complete test page to different locations around the world. I also did this same practice when I hosted with the other hosts on this board. (5 of them come to mind). There has yet to be a day since I was with rackshack where the tests haven't shown Rackshack as the clear winner. Uptime...you bet! Each server is remotely monitored by 2 different services I subscribe to. One that emails me and one that calls my cell. If a box is down for more then 2 minutes, I get the call. It's been blissfully silent for 300 days. Believe what you want...but there are a tremendous amount of posts in this thread who swear by rackshack. I am one of them. |

btw, show me another hosting provider with a support forums with as much info and knowledge as the one rackshack provides. basically, if you follow any of their howto's, a complete n00bie can manage a server. hell, when i ordered my first box, i knew shit about linux/ensim etc.

Jupiter looked at their pricing and didn't want to go there because Juputer insists on supporting their customers. It's clear from the posts above, that Rackshack will not help you with your box other than reboot it.
If you don't use much BW and and don't ever need any admin on your server, go for it. |

I too knew basically nothing about managing my own server. So I posted a note on their forum, asking for a tech to update my files, tweak my apache settings...etc. Within 15 minutes I had 6 responses. I hired one of the board regulars. $25 per server and my boxes all run like a dream.
I did have one server crash a few weeks back. I adjusted the maxclients variable higher then one of my boxes could handle. Put in a reboot ticket at 8:03. Tech was rebooting my server at 8:06. They were running a FSCK at 8:13, when the box still wouldn't respond to ping, SSH, or anything else. (I only sent in the 1 trouble ticket for reboot. They did the followup checks and fixes on their own accord). Server was up and running again by 8:27.... 24 minutes for my own error. That's pretty damn good. And had the server responded right away, the time from trouble ticket to being up again would have been 4 minutes. And all you have to do is look at their own forum to see that on a whole, their customers are pretty happy bunch. |

And there are always other ways at looking at the pricing. Here's how I look at it. With 5 servers, I am getting the equivelent of about 10.1 mbps. ...3500 gigs of transfer. So, instead of having to supercharge one server to handle all of this traffic, I have 5 servers which can each deliver 700 gigs without breaking a sweat. High traffic days...no worries on my end.
Plus, each server I own is on a different subnet...baring a complete datacentre meltdown...chances are if one server was to go down, I would still have 4 servers up and delivering my content. At the start of this thread, I would have been satisfied to say simply, "I am a satisfied customer of Rackshack". But, when I see the competition slinging mud...then it's only fair that the disinformation gets a fair rebuttal. |
