Found this in the silvercash forum:

AJ, thanks buddy.. Its not over and yes I and our team could use some serious sleep. We have things fairly stable at this point but still slow.
Come monday we have a 100,000 dollar firewall coming in that will stop everything. Being that it was a holiday weekend it made it impossible to get that hardware now.
sorry and thanks for everyones patience... Things will be good again soon

Silvercash's conversions have always been good, hopefully after this disruption, the rates remain steady as before.

There might be some script kiddies reading this who will be quite willing to prove that $100k firewall worth squat.

Dynaspain, well obviously it takes some programming as well. Basically my point was we were able to block out everything they were doing except for the huge Ddos attacks and this firewall will do what we werent able to do before. And I didnt post it here for everyone to read and challange people. I posted it in the SC forum to keep our webmasters updated

Everything is working just fine right now without the machine... Lets just hope it continues, I could use some sleep for as I'm sure my employees could to.

Yup and apart from the fact that a DDoS is usually traffic just like
legit users watching your pages......it's just WAY too much traffic
if a 100 servers are requesting pages on 1, 2, 3 servers at full
speed.....it's needles to say that those servers will go down just
as a $100K firewall would especially if the IP's that are being used
are not spoofed/forged.

Servers still run with a 100Mpbs network card so as long as the
amount of request is higher than the capacity 1 or multiple servers can handle you'll always win. And that's even BEFORE a
firewall can read/verify if packets should be accepted or dropped.
Sticking in a 1Gbps ethernet wouldn't solve that either. I would like to see a firewall that can handle 1Gpbs packets to be verified
real time. Especially if the packets are small request packets.

Unless you are able to slow down/break up the DDoS you're
fucked simply due the volume and amount of different source
addresses a good DDoS creates.

I actually know several "script kiddies" capable of this shit.

They basically sit on botnets that consist of anywhere from 10k to 100k compromised hosts, that take commands and work at the drop of a dime.

Basically what this "botnet" will do is have all 100k highspeed bots send ping requests and large packets of data to the server IP.

I know for a fact there is very little that can be done about an attack of this scale.

The usual outcome is that the attacker gets bored and stops, or he has another need for his bots and pulls them off the attack.

For those of you that have never heard of or seen a botnet in action, this is a screenie of a small one in action. Notice the owner give the command, and then they jump on it ...

pic is rather large, let it load.

Partly true. Ping request are often used because they are small
packets which means a shitload of packets causing huge load to
anything that tries to filter packets. Large datagrams are useless
because they are too easy to filter out as filters only read the
headers of the packets being sent in order to determine if they
should get dropped or accepted.

Script Kiddies IRC botnets can be a hassle but they mostly use forged source addresses which makes it a little easier to take
proper action. They can still cause a lot of problems but it's not
as bad as real distinctive hosts with geniune source addresses.
Forged packets can be traced back to their original destination.
Routers and Firewalls have ways to determine if packets are
forged or spoofed which makes it easier to filter them out.

Non forged/spoofed packets cannot be filtered by labeling them
as forged which makes it a lot harder to properly filter them out.

I never realized bot hosts are forged. Unless they assume part of the IRC server host? I know when i used to go on irc, if you did a whois on me (on certain servers) my ip was masked with something intentional from the server.

I think this was done to prevent ddos attacks to indeviduals.

its kind of sad that it's going to take a 100k firewall for it to stop.If one is only makeing 20k a month profit off their paysite, that becomes a big investment

Would have been nice had a thread been started here.

Do a search for silvercash, must be a hundred of them asking wtf is going on.

Not everyone reads SC forums man.
