my computer keeps restaring by itself

Hi guys!
my computer keeps restarting at random times, mostly after I turn on my computer it would restart and restart and restart and then all of a sudden it is fixed. I am guessing this is either a hardware/software/virus problem but I scanned for viruses and could not find anything. If anyone knows what the problem might be let me know.

thanks!

I thought it could be the CPU fan!! because it started making some weird noise but after a while the noise stops.

Probably your computer is set to restart when it crashes. You can check the event viewers in the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel for clues. To stop it from restarting go C.P.>System>Advanced>(Startup and Recovery)Settings. Uncheck "Automatically restart".

Well there you have it. My guess would be that your CPU cooling fans is on its last legs.

When the CPU overtemps, the system will shut down. If the fan is not running, it will overtemp. Perhaps after you start the thing up for the umpteenth time, the fan get started (its always the 'bearings' that cause the problem) and keeps you cool and running.

When the CPU and/or chipset fan (if any) fail, you are running the rist of frying your box. If you are getting noises, that is your cue to open the thing up and replace the failing fan.

That is all.

i had the same problem the last few days but also the lights were blinking from time to time... that's from low tension if some fuse is fucked, the support comed and fixed the problem with the tension and my pc doesn't restart anymore
there are few possibilites, try to find it
it can be some software problem
it can be from the power supply
it can be from a virus
it can be from the higher temperatures, get into the bios and check out what's the current CPU temp and on what temperature is given on the pc to shut down/restart. on mine is 80 Celsius
there are other possibilties also

i don't recommend you to reinstall windows if your pc will restart in the middle of the installation

Exactly. I had the same problem on two different computers. When the power supply starts going the computer restarts all by itself. It's very annoying.

NOTE:

This is Donovan Phillips. I didn't realize I am posting under my girlfriend's account. I am using her computer because my cousin is using mine to edit photos. I'm used to sitting down at the computer and typing away.

I let my girlfriend, Sierra (www.seeusnude.net) take over my free site (www.dirty4free.com) and told her she needed to register to post at GFY so she could learn. She doesn't post (damn it) but still lurks and reads. I never thought to sign her out and sign myself in. Damn it!

I had that problem too, are you using Norton's AV? I heard that could fuck it up sometimes as well

what kind of CPU and mother board are you using? I had a P4 2.4 and motherboard that conflicted with each other and it did the same thing, normally when I go to open an app

my computer did that when it was over heating. try adding another fan or cleaning your pc out. SiSoftware Sandra Standard is good for monitoring your pc's hardware.

That can also be caused by the KAK virus.
Go here and run a test to see if you have it.

I have a slightly different problem... occasionally after I shut down my computer, it immediately turns itself back on. I select shutdown, walk out of the room, then come back later and find it's booted again!

Well I checked somewhere and thought it was Norton AV with that lucomserver thing but I fixed that and it still happens.

So it is my CPU fan or my power supply. I checked for viruses and have none.

How can I do this on Windows 98?
