Well there you have it. My guess would be that your CPU cooling fans is on its last legs.

When the CPU overtemps, the system will shut down. If the fan is not running, it will overtemp. Perhaps after you start the thing up for the umpteenth time, the fan get started (its always the 'bearings' that cause the problem) and keeps you cool and running.

When the CPU and/or chipset fan (if any) fail, you are running the rist of frying your box. If you are getting noises, that is your cue to open the thing up and replace the failing fan.
