What causes a cable connection to become slow?

I figured I ask you tech savy people first before I call my ISP (secretaries usually dont know much)

The past 2 days, my Cable Internet connection has been slow as fuck... Id say as slow as a 33.3 dialup connection.

WTF is wrong with this thing? I read something about Shared Nodes and bandwidth hogging neighbors, could this be the problem?

If so, should my ISP fix some shit... or should I go around my neighborhood cutting peoples cable lines?

there are actually a lot of variables... the modem could be going out, too many people in your area with cable. or the most common that I have sometimes... the cable company! so I have to call them to have them fix it.

If its a consistent problem then its most likely too many neighbors using your bandwidth, if its a once in a while thing then its just normal cable problems with your ISP, may want to give them a call and see whats up.

First day I got cable at my new place I barely got 100KB/s now its 5-10x more so Im happy again.

Try to power down your modem for about 5 min... turn you computer off... and router if you have one..

Boot up the modem, router then your computer... if that does not work then you will need to contact your cable company... they are having a problem... usually too many people on at once, but there could be other reasons as well...

Make sure you don't have any splitters from the main cable line to any TV's to your modem..I don't know the exact numbers but ever split decreases your speed... I didn't know it made much difference until we had a bad storm and the cable guy had to replace my outside line which had a 3 way splitter..and I told him I had Cable internet and he put some kind of meter on the line running to my modem (the signal sucked) so he ran a separate line for me directly from the "Main" cable line.. I was shocked at the speed increase..
