Best "under-rated" movies

Yeah we all know Apocalypse Now, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction etc.. etc.. are good movies. Cool movies.

But what are the movies that not everyone may have had an appreciation for? What great movies would you recommend people see?

If you haven't seen it, see "Glengarry Glen Ross". Amazing movie.

I don't like that movie for some reason. Don't know why, it's too slow for me I think. I put it in a "class" with Wall Street and Boiler Room (both GREAT movies), but I just can't get into it.

Boiler Room is probably one of my all time favorites.

I thought they were over rated!
A bit like memento...

It takes much more than a clever plot for a movie to be entertaining...

But it always look good to say that you really liked a clever movie...

They're not under-rated. You misunderstood me. Although they're good... what I'm saying is they always make everyone's "best movie" list.
I'm looking for other movies that maybe not everyone has seen.

I'd also recommend the original "Sunset Boulevard", or the 1935 version of "Mutiny on the Bounty"...

Definitely! After graduating from college, I worked in a lot of telemarketing rooms and that movie was eerily close to reality...I identified with/"knew" each of the characters and their characteristics...god, I love that movie...great acting, excellent dialog, a ton of humor (though most of it is "inside" humor)

"...get them to signed on the line that is dotted..."

for underrated gems, I'd have to go with "Welcome To The Dollhouse" and "Gummo"...although "Gummo" is one of those movies people either love or hate....no middle ground.....

of course I agree with all the Kevin Smith mentions and I thought Memento was great. Memento left me totally disorientated afterwards and anything that can play with my mind that much gets my thumbs up.

I will throw into the ring:

Strange Days - much underrated imho. Excellent performances, good premise, good amount of action and a great directoral debut. The crowd scene at the end is admirable just for the organisation. We have watched it over and over and still like it. I worked in cinema when it came out and the trailers put me off but I realised when I saw it that they were selling a different movie than the one they actually made.

Frailty: Never heard a thing about it untill I saw it sitting on the video rack. Religion, Insanity, and Serial Murder... what else could you want ina movie? Great flick!

The Gift: (Cate Blanchett, Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes) good movie... not real scary, but defiantly worth a $1.75 rental on a Friday night.

Eve's Bayou was another good one.

What a great idea! So many nites we sit around and try to think of good movies to watch....I am printing out all your ideas!

Red Violin: Very original, must pay attention
Run Lola Run: Great portrayl of what happens when things change even the slightest bit.
Sliding Doors: Same idea as Run Lola Run
Frances: True story. Makes you realize, if you don't surround yourself with good people than you too may get very damaged and lost in the system
The Others: Just really well done
