Shogun Assassin (excellent violent, bloody, disturbing Japanese samurai movie)

Crippled Masters (disturbing kung fu movie about one guy with no arms and a guy with no legs, both of whom kick ass with the appendages they have left)

The Street Fighter

Krzysztof Kieslowski is in my opinion one of the best film makers that ever lived.

So if you haven't already seen his trilogy, Trois Couleurs (Blue, White and Red) i highly recommend going out and either buying or renting them in the near future.

Spirited Away

Really good flick, look at what kind of damage its doing on the IMDB charts. #1 animated movie, #48 on the all time top 250 list. Voice acting for the USA version really well done.

Once you see that one, if it floats your boat, check out Princess Mononoke
#3 on the top 100 animated list and #118 out of 250 on the all time list.

On the non animated side, lesser known but top movies I would recommend are:

Amelie
Romantic comedy.

The Professional (AKA Leon)
Not really obscure but a GREAT movie. Action/Romance

Once Upon a Time in America
Crime Drama. Not on par with the Godfather but still very very good.

I loved Bullworth with Warren Beatty.

Th political satire was biting and don't understand why it didn't do better at the box office...

Here's a couple that I would recommend.

For you David Lynch fans.... ERASERHEAD. It's kinda out there... but still very good for you Lynch fans.

Also... Story of Ricky gets listed all the time in the "Bad Movie Reviews" but that's why you need to see it. Too much unbelievable shit to describe here. Suffice to say it's a classic, gory, comedic, mess. (but it's not trying to be funny).
BOTH AWESOME FILMS!

but my Story of Ricky is a pirate copy with real bad sound
need to get myself a decent version on DVD

A partial list of recommends:

Peckinpah's "the Wild Bunch" - the best buddy/dude flick ever made.. favorite line "Let's go"...

"Twinkle, twinkle, Killer Cain" goes by another name too, "the Ninth Configuration" - psycho vets in expiremental mental ward pushed too far...

"A boy and his dog" - Campy fun in apocolyptic future setting, cannibalistic humanistic underground dwellars, Don Johnson used as a sperm machine for sterile society...what more could you ask for?

"The Unbearable Llightness of Being" - bittersweet melancholy, beautiful movie about love and life before the czechs were only known for being porno superbeings...

"The Seventh Seal" - Death plays chess with a knight during the plague... few films can rap as much into one tidy meaningful package of brilliance...

Any samurai flick by Kurosawa, but especially "the Seven Samurai"

"Drugstore Cowboy" - ok.. Requiem for a Dream is one of the best junkie flix ever but this one certainly is wonderful.. I mean in that seedy junkie high sort of way...

"Aguirre, the wrath of God" - Before Colonel Kurtz went a few clicks past the realm of reason, Aguirre was boating up the amazon into madness and death...

I can certainly go on but this is a start...

Idle Hands was a good horror-comedy spoof.

Return of the Living Dead was probably about the best remake of a classic horror movie I've ever seen. (the one that added some comedy into the mix, not that other remake that was basically a carbon copy of the original)

Total Recall was a great movie, I never get sick of watching it.

Finally seen Trailer Park Boys - the Movie the other day. That's a classic.

Yeah I hear ya on GGR, if you are or have been at some point in sales then you can probably get into it, otherwise its slow and the ending is non eventful. Having been in hardcore outside sales mgt and training for 8 years, I really got into the details of the movie and used to show clips to my sales staff.

All WAR movies rock in my opinion. Not everyone likes to see that much reality on the big screen.

Hamburger Hill and Full Metal Jacket are great movies , and no one talks about them much any more
