When a domain expires, some registrars modify the Nameservers
so that they can have search pages (PPC pages) loading on YOUR domain.

Do you think this is theft? Why should they benefit from the thousands of domains going thru REDEMPTIONPERIOD and the sorts and make millions off them.

Personally, I think it's theft. If you forget to pay your mortgage
with the bank... does that give the bank the right to change
the locks and move in? Fuck no.

You obviously missed the boat. A bank will recoup their loses after 3-4 months of not paying your mortgage. They want to square up the deal. They don't change your locks and move in after 10 days.

which registrars exactly? where are you getting this info from?

i run a service that generates drop lists and we monitor some
2,000,000+ domains non stop. i've never seen any of the
top 20 registrars (because that's basically all you ever see)
do this.

sure it isn't "fair". if they point your site to ppc for a few
days it may get indexed by a search engine and you might
lose your keyword placement.

then again, in most cases you can only blame yourself when
crap like this happens. under race circumstances, the registrar
never bothers to send out a renewal notice in which case
you're still screwed, but it wasn't "technically" your fault.

With 25,000+ domains coming available today... that's a lot of PPC pages. Thankfully all registrars aren't doing it.

Note: Once the registration period is over, the domain is no longer registered to you. For the grace period, the registrar can and should point it to wherever the fuck they want.

Think, 25,000 domains today.. 25000 tomorrow.. essentially the possibility is for 25Kx30 lets say. They have 45 days before they have to pay the 6 dollars to verisign so they give the client 10 days.. that gives them 35 days to advertise for free and make huge bank.

Nobody cares... a while back itech.com expired and I called them. They reregistered. It's too bad they werent' with GoDaddy let's say. They've got the money to fuck a registrar up.. I can't wait until it happens.

The deal that the registrar has with the registry is that they pay the registry for the domain and they get to keep it for something like 1 year + 45 days. The deal you have with the registrar is that you pay them and you get to keep it for 1 year.

The difference in days between those two deals is the time in which the registrar controls the domain and you have no rights to it. Most registrars will allow you to renew it after that time, but they don't let you use it.

I understand how the registrars doing this could present a conflict of interest of sorts, but on the other hand, they probably have the right to do it. If you have a problem with it, complain to ICANN. They're always looking out for the best interest of internet users.

Example: Your domain expires. 10 days later it's sold to highest bidder for $80 or so.

I disagree with it. The registrar shouldn't be able to resell something they paid nothing for. They actually made profit when you registered the domain, and then they make double the profit.
