Registrar Theft, do you agree?

When a domain expires, some registrars modify the Nameservers
so that they can have search pages (PPC pages) loading on YOUR domain.

Do you think this is theft? Why should they benefit from the thousands of domains going thru REDEMPTIONPERIOD and the sorts and make millions off them.

Personally, I think it's theft. If you forget to pay your mortgage
with the bank... does that give the bank the right to change
the locks and move in? Fuck no.

:2 cents:

LiveDose 06-18-2003 06:45 PM

fight the power!

lawked 06-18-2003 06:50 PM

Fight the theft. I hope they do it to a huge corporations domain and they get their ass tuned. Either the domain works or it doesn't. If it doesn't, then pay for it. If it does, it should be pointed at the owners site :glugglug

Yeah it does, if you dont pay your mortgage, they repo, if you forget to pay for your domain, its not YOUR domain anymore. They can do whatever the fuck they want with it.

lawked 06-18-2003 08:25 PM

You obviously missed the boat. A bank will recoup their loses after 3-4 months of not paying your mortgage. They want to square up the deal. They don't change your locks and move in after 10 days.

A registrar did not front anything towards the domain, they are
making millions off these domains and you like it? PPC pages
fuck up the internet...

Fro 06-18-2003 08:26 PM

Pay the fucking renewal fees you cheap bitch.

lawked 06-18-2003 08:30 PM

Take it in the ass you kinky bitch.

Fro 06-18-2003 08:35 PM

What's the problem lawked? Missed the renewal notice and now you're pissed that your registrar wants $100 instead of $10?

If the name's worth more than $69, someone already has a SnapBack registration on it. Pay the fee or you'll lose the name.

Mr.Fiction 06-18-2003 08:36 PM

They control the domain between when it expires and when it drops, it's not theft.

detoxed 06-18-2003 08:39 PM

exactly. they arent stealing anything. you didnt pay by the deadline so they shut it off. phone company does the same thing.

they may do that. but they have the right to take your house if you're a day late on the payment.

you're in a contract with them. if you breach the contract, they can take what's theirs.

which registrars exactly? where are you getting this info from?

i run a service that generates drop lists and we monitor some
2,000,000+ domains non stop. i've never seen any of the
top 20 registrars (because that's basically all you ever see)
do this.

sure it isn't "fair". if they point your site to ppc for a few
days it may get indexed by a search engine and you might
lose your keyword placement.

then again, in most cases you can only blame yourself when
crap like this happens. under race circumstances, the registrar
never bothers to send out a renewal notice in which case
you're still screwed, but it wasn't "technically" your fault.

No that's not the case. I'm getting pissed off clicking in yahoo categories and getting a fucking GoDaddy page.

With 25,000+ domains coming available today... that's a lot of PPC pages. Thankfully all registrars aren't doing it.

As for the phone company comment, phone companies don't make millions off your disconnected phone.

You guys like the system, I dislike it. We agree to disagree then :321GFY

Well, as long as you keep clicking away in Yahoo cats, I'll keep making money. I'm glad someone still visits those wretched indexes.

chodadog 06-18-2003 09:11 PM

Note: Once the registration period is over, the domain is no longer registered to you. For the grace period, the registrar can and should point it to wherever the fuck they want.

Pay the fucking 10 dollars to have it renewed, and stop your bitching, you cheap motherfucker.

#1 - I'm not French Canadian.
#2 - I'm attacking everyone here, aside from detoxed, so don't feel special.

Try not paying your mortgage, of coarse they'll take your house.

Why? Does it then belong to them? Did they pay for it the way the prior owner did? It seems nobody owns it at that point.

Fina-fucking-lee. Someone gets it :thumbsup Why the hell should they be raking in the millions without shelling out any money?

Think, 25,000 domains today.. 25000 tomorrow.. essentially the possibility is for 25Kx30 lets say. They have 45 days before they have to pay the 6 dollars to verisign so they give the client 10 days.. that gives them 35 days to advertise for free and make huge bank.

Nobody cares... a while back itech.com expired and I called them. They reregistered. It's too bad they werent' with GoDaddy let's say. They've got the money to fuck a registrar up.. I can't wait until it happens.

The deal that the registrar has with the registry is that they pay the registry for the domain and they get to keep it for something like 1 year + 45 days. The deal you have with the registrar is that you pay them and you get to keep it for 1 year.

The difference in days between those two deals is the time in which the registrar controls the domain and you have no rights to it. Most registrars will allow you to renew it after that time, but they don't let you use it.

I understand how the registrars doing this could present a conflict of interest of sorts, but on the other hand, they probably have the right to do it. If you have a problem with it, complain to ICANN. They're always looking out for the best interest of internet users. :1orglaugh

What do you think about the Registrars that profit by Selling the expired names and bypassing the Redemption Period process altogether ?

Example: Your domain expires. 10 days later it's sold to highest bidder for $80 or so.

I disagree with it. The registrar shouldn't be able to resell something they paid nothing for. They actually made profit when you registered the domain, and then they make double the profit.

I guess I need to be a registrar, wanna back me and help do the programming Brujah? :)
