A friend of mine was on Paxil for a for few months a few years ago and he had a really hard time getting off of that stuff.

It was like a drug to him...he always had to have it.

Isn't there a class action lawsuit against Paxil?

Jucy, I am on paxil to control anxiety as well.

Honestly the paxil has changed my quality of life.
If is very difficult to get off, if i miss 2 days I get very sick (i'm on 30 mg a day) BUT I do have to say I am better of with it than without it.

The lawsuit against paxil was due to one of the original formulations of the drug. The changed it with Paxil SR.

Fletch I'll check it out, but I also have depression in some cases perscribed drugs are not a bad thing, my wife also takes paxil and she is a different women when she is not on it. She actualy has black outs and blind rage in extreme cases.

I do agree for the most part these drugs are over prescribed I just do stick by the fact that in our case it was a good thing.

Maybe a psychiatrist would help?

Medication is not the only answer.

But I guess those commercials have everyone thinking it is.

Oh yea I dont watch TV...

I agree is some cases its over prescribed, I just dont think im my case it was. I'm 33 I've been to my share of shrinks and I definatly notice the change in my life since the paxil...

I understand what you are saying I do read self help books myself but they just did not get past it. Something is wrong in my head maybe it was the drugs when i was younger...

Maybe you need a new girl? ;)

Is she psycho? What the fuck is blind rage all about?

She just freaks out and starts wailing on you?

Hit the road man, dump the pills, dump the girl. ;)

one of my employees HAD anxiety attacks and believe it or not has controlled them with a fairly strict adherence to the atkins diet. He has paxil prescriptions but did not take them due to his concerns of the drug.

i have no clue if its mental or physical and know nothing about anxiety attacks, this is just what he does.

that book made me

1. stop drinking caffeiine.

2. gave up cigarettes.

3. quit eating sugar.

4. and stop drinking every damn day. (even AFTER AA)

all 4 powerful contributors to anxiety. It's a tough read, especially if your friend is in denial, i threw the book against the wall a few times while reading it, its harder to swallow than any pill thats for sure.

i realized the one thing that caused my anxiety was lack of control of myself. i have a very addictiove, compulsive personality, and more often than not can let one thing have its way with me until i am almost fetal, but no longer.

i am in control now.

no more cowering in the face of anxiety or addiction and for damn sure not going day to day on milligrams of some pill.

For the love of god, stop taking that poison (taper for a couple of weeks). It screwed up my life completely for 6 months. I was a 2200 ELO chess player before Paxil, and barely 2000 while on it. My creativity was nil, and I felt like a zombie. The worst thing is that it didn't really help me deal with social anxiety the way Valium does. It took me months to feel like myself again... and in some ways I'm not quite the same.

well im somewhat anti-social, as are a lot of ppl who work on the net... also get some anxiety in uncomfortable situations but nothing i can't deal with. i hate how these drug companies are whoring their wares to whomever they can, now zoloft is being used as paxil, were as it was only used for bi polar disorder before i think, we are medicating ourselves into oblivion as a society, instead of fixing the real problem, we are only masking it. and someone is getting rich off it.

the first one.

'This book has helped me more than anything else in my struggle to deal with panic. I've had panic attacks for the last 9 years or so -- since I was 17 -- although I didn't know/wouldn't admit what they were for a long time.'

Yeah not everyone may be lucky enough to beat it alone, but most can. Everyone's problems are unique. At least you are happy, thats what counts.

I have panic attacks, though pretty infrequent these days. I control them with xanax and the "don't panic" book, which I think is pretty good.

btw, Paxil appears "addictive" because it has a very short half life. Its an SSRI just like Prozac, but prozac has such a long half life that if you stop taking it the drug leaves your system so gradually that you'll be weaned off if by the time it gets out of your system. The tradeoff is that it also builds up very slowly and takes ages to start working.

Paxil starts in 1-2 weeks. Prozac can take 4 weeks or more.

Just take some Benzos (Valium, Xanax, Ativan, Halcion, etc.) a couple of hours before the date. Experiment a bit and you'll find the right stuff and the right dosage. If I hadn't discovered Valium, I would be literally unable to get out of the house. While I'm not exactly Mr. Personality right now, I can at least have conversations with bank tellers, doctors, dates, etc. without stuttering too much and shaking.

Benzo's work really well for me too... problem is that many doc's are afraid to prescribe them. I was told flat out by several health systems that their doctors would refuse to prescribe xanax to me. Took me a couple of tries to find a doc who trusted my judgement enough to let me self treat with it.

Xanax has gotten a bad rap, but its a hell of alot less dangerous a drug than alcohol.

I take a MAOI, a lot of doctors won't prescribe them because you can't eat certain foods or risk a hypertensive crisis.......

It works like a charm though for anxiety/depression

I admit to being very "anti" "modern medicine"...but then again I live in Vermont where alternative medicine is established and works. Every time I have tried homeopathic, it's worked. Every time I tried the ER or a doctor, they fucked something up, which in one instance had me puking an entire night because they gave me medicine that was not supposed to be taken internally and told me to take it internally.

This country (the US I mean) is way too primitive in that regards, they've gotten at least here to where they prescribe medicine for its side effects. (No, I wasn't about to follow that advice)

Find a good homeopath. they should be able to fix things for you without creating new problems...as far as anxiety, anything psychological, *never* go to a psychiatrist, go to a psychologist. The difference is psychiatrists tend to only have faith in medicine, whereas psychologists use that a last resort and rely on other solutions that won't affect you in other ways.

I personally have had anxiety problems, and what my psychologist said was whenever they came up to go to a quiet place with a pen and paper and write them out..the problems looked silly written down. It fixed it. If they didn't look silly, she told me to make a rhyming song out of it and sing it aloud. (Embarassing!) I never took - nor do I think I ever would - Paxil or anything like it, You'd have trouble getting me beyond Aspirin.

Why pay a homeopath? You can get the placebo effect for free with sugar pills.

I have bad social anxiety, when I'm around a lot of people or just a couple, people that I don't know too well especially. First I get a stomach ache, then neaseua, getting close to upchucking and starting to sweat a little. Then if I think they're noticing that I'm getting wierd I'll start to panic. So I quietly try to slip away and go "hide". I dropped out of highschool becuase of it, it was bad.

I don't really get it that bad when I'm around good friends. Also if I'm drunk, I'll be the life of the party with no problems at all talking to everyone, wierd.

i had no idea about paxil being that bad.
my best friend started taking it after giving birth, and she is fine. handles it all so well.. but i started thinking the other day.
when is she 'done' with the medication?
what if she gets off of it, sees what reality actually is, and flips out completley?
her poor baby has horrible acid reflux too, so he cries all the damn time.. thank god she is on it.
sometimes it pains me just to be on the phone with her and hear him in the background.
and she is just like nothing is happening.

OK, I *was* being nice :-)

Homeopaths aren't bullshit. I had dental work done and suddenly all my gums were swollen. So bad I couldn't eat. I thought it would go away but then I eventually freaked and went to the ER...cashing in on my lovely $5K deductible non-insurance.

They immediately prescribed a salve/cream. I said "This looks like Neosporin. You sure it's safe?"

They said, sure.

I puked my guts out the entire night with two doses only. I could barely stand.

I went to the website of the co that made the salve, it said "NEVER TAKE INTERNALLY." they had told me to put it on my gums, pretty damn internal.

I went to a homeopath, and he told me to take licorice concentrate. (Not the candy, licorice in US is really anise flavoring). Swelling gone in a few days, everything cleared up in a week. I believe in results - would you rather puke your guts out for a week for nothing, or just take something that tastes nasty? The lattter has worked more than twice for me, even on colds, won't change back.

You believe the healthcare system works? They make more money keeping you sick than curing you. That has a lot of implications too in the larger picture.

That's why God invented foreign pharmacies. My new source in Thailand is quite affordable (100 valium 10mg for $27). The worst that can happen is a seized shipment at the customs. Keep the orders small, stick to benzos (you can get in trouble if you order vikes or barbs), and all will be good.

Homeopathy cures the common cold too.. in around 7 days.

I hear it will even cure the flu in 2-3 weeks! Amazing stuff.

I dropped out of college because of my social anxiety issues. I couldn't speak in front of the class, let alone have a conversation with people there, other than a couple of geeks that were even more pathetic than I was.

Now, of course, you can get a college education on the internet so we can't really use our social phobia as an excuse anymore.
