Currency issues AUD vs US vs CAD
Some Australians might be interested in this.
I went to deposit my cheques today and they found that a cheque from Slickcash.com was written on a Canadian cheque but in US dollars. As the payment was only for $35 US they had to ask me if I wanted to deposit it. I said Yes. Heres the deal they gave me. Because it's an Canadian cheque it's automaticly in Canadian dollars, even if the cheque says US currency. The bank couldn't give me a transfer amount for it because they need to send it off to someone else to transfer it to an exchange rate (for some reason it takes 30days). When they get it a $20 fee is charged + it costs $10.50 to deposit the cheque in the first place, so it's cost a total of $30.50 AUD. $35 Candian = $39 AUD So instead of getting a US cheque which converts to $54 AUD im getting $8.50 cheque because it's in a different currency. None the less, I dumped slickcash a few weeks ago. But hey, it''s all money and worth fighting for. /end

Have you asked different banks how they deal with those type of checks?

But im looking for a loan soon and I need a stable bank account. It's not so much the bank, just the fact the cheque was Canadian with a US currency.

Yesterday we banked a Hpic cheque drawn in US dollars on a bank in the Isle of Man plus a canadian cheque drawn in US dollars on a bank in Canada.
The cheques went into one of our Commonwealth bank accounts and the amounts were accepted as US dollars. I think whoever took your cheques might have had their wires jammed up their arse ![]()

G'Day,
With Westpac, even if you're got a US Dollar account they won't let you deposit Canadian US$ checks into it. What they will do for a fee of $15 is issue a deposit bond on the check and cash it for you immediatly. It's fucking expensive but at least it's quick. Hope this helps! |

Hey Zorgman and DJF,
I need a part-time webmaster to do a couple of days a week for us. Video encoding, basic server and content management, AVS/TGP and site maintenance. Would you know anyone in Sydney who is up for it? BRIAN. |

Hey Pistol,
I haven't meet any webmasters in Sydney as yet. Still waiting for some type of drink night or something. Wish I could help you out, but I have too many php projects to work on. Enough work to keep me busy for 5 months. ![]()

OK so catch this - I tried to set up a US Dollar manual credit card processing facility for content sales.
B2B - next to no risk, lower volumes with larger $$ amounts. I did the grand fucking tour of every fucking national and merchant/foreign bank in Sydney and: a. No-one could listen to me. b. Those who made a half-assed attempt couldn't get it. It seems all the smart folks are in porn. God bless you all! |

Ok here is the deal:
I use ANZ they charge $15 for the cheque BUT you can get the money STRIGHT AWAY no waiting 30 days the reason they can do this is because if the check DOES bounce then not only do you have to pay the money back BUt they also hit you up with an overdraw fee - which makes them more money anyhow so they dont care! its fantastic i had been putting all my checks in anz and waiting for 30 days to go get the money until last month and yes it was a Canadian Check and they DO pay them out in US funds even if you are in tasmania lol i did the same in QLD too i cant see why NSW would be any different |

These are St Georges charges for depositing US cheques.
1 cheque = $10.50 total 2 cheques = $10.00 total 3 cheques = $16.20 total Because they can only fit 3 cheques on a receipt -- if you have more then 3 cheques they only charge you 1 fee, a total of $16.20 all up. So if you have 20 cheques it still only costs your $16.20 to deposit all 20 cheques (not each). Still takes 20 working day (30days) to clear. I have asked if they can clear it and they said NO. They don't even listen to anything you say after asking this question -- it's like the mute button.. lol

iBill likes to do shit like that too.
I was getting checks that were in US currency, drawn on a bank in the UK. My bank couldn't cash them and had to send them to collections so I could get the money, well part of it...once collections got their cut. Thanks iBill, you fucks ![]() |

I so hate banks, i'm with CBA and god damn they take so freaking long. I mean I always seem to spend at least 30-50 minutes every time I walk in the door. And most of that is waiting while they fill out bullshit forms and shit.

Sounds very similar to the Canadian banks. Absolute disdain for their customers and at the branch level no fucking clue how to handle foreign transactions. You goto a business branch, a personal branch, email someone, and call them on the phone and you will have 4 very different answers. The branches are the most fun. They just shrug their shoulders and stare blankly at you like you are some raving fucking lunatic who needs to have his money taken away. |

A bunch of times though If I have a USD check to deposit in my personal account I'll just put it in the ATM - say its 100$ USD I'll deposit it as 100$ Canadian. Then like a week later I get some mail from them notifing me that it was a USD check and they convert it and add the extra $ into my account. Haven't had a problem with that method ever.

I don't use any of their wire services, at their recommendation, because it just costs me way too much, I would be paying through the nose in service fees. I am glad I bank with them, because they help me keep my costs down.

I'm in Melbourne, I use Bank of Melbourne (who were gobbled up by Westpac). $10 for up to 4 cheques, so long as they are all in the same currency. I usually deposit them in batches of 4, so it ends up being $2.50 per cheque. I get them converted and credited on the spot because I'm a regular, but I did have some issues in the past before everyone knew me.
There's no conditions at all - held funds, minimum balance requirements, nothing. I can withdraw the money the same day and often do. It's better going to my 4.75% ING account than sitting in my 0% 'savings' (cough, cough) account. ![]() One thing you guys should check, the wire conversion rate is usually slightly better than the cheque conversion rate. If you are receiving enough, it may actually work out cheaper to wire. For example... T/T: 0.6551 cheques: 0.6605 You'll need to be transferring $US2k+ to break the price point though, unless you get your wires free. |
