indoor pools

i know some people here have them. what are your thoughts verses an outdoor (especially in climates that are winter 5 months of the year). what are they like in the summer? i'd think it would kind of suck in warm weather... i know you can have some of it open up in the summers. thanks

then an indoor pool with some type of retractable roof (in the room its in) would kick ass. If not that, a lot of windows.

I wish I had a pool. I have a stream running through the yard with fish and frogs and whatnot in it... but nothing I could possibly swim in.

i'd think that the five months you could use it during the winter would make up for the inconvenience when it's warm outside.

it's for a place in the interior of BC, Canada. Kicking Horse mountain resort (it's a ski resort).

an outdoor pool would be usable probably 5 months of the year... unless i built one of those winterized heated pools, which are very expensive.

They build them here with the roof and walls made of curved plastic, in the summer you just roll the top back. Cheaper than brick but costs slightly more to heat.

If you can spend the money, go for an indoor pool surrounded by glass walls (or at least glass on two connecting sides).
I've never had an indoor pool but I have had plenty of outdoor pools. Having to wait for it to warm up enough to use is a bitch - especially during indian summer when it gets warm for a week.
With an indoor pool though you wouldn't have the extra maintenance of cleaning out all of those damn leaves and bugs - you could just go jump in it anytime you wanted to without having to skim the surface for 15 minutes first so that big nasty half-dead wasp doesn't get into your hair and decide it's you he's pissed at.
Look at it this way - you can either spend the money and go indoor, or you can *not* spend the money and then spend hours upon hours of extra maintenance on the damn thing.
Once you pay yourself a wage for the time spent on extra maintenance *and* figure in the bonus of getting to use it year-round, indoor isn't so expensive after all.
PS - be sure to get one of those that have a little hooked-on hot tub at one end. Good for romantic evenings and for resting the bones after hitting the slopes all day!

that's an obvious huge plus. agreed. but when it's really hot, and you have this indoor pool... well, in my mind it seem kind of lame swimming in an indoor pool in the middle of summer.

i don't know. i seriously don't know. this entire 'project' is freaking me out, because i don't have the time for it. i want everything to be perfect, but i'm terrible at deligating tasks. i am a control freak with my business, and i want to be a control freak here. except i can't possibly fill that role if i build this place. FUCK.

the hot tub will definitely be happening without question. that's all that will be running in the winters, unless the pool is indoors, or i opt for a winterized outdoor pool...

my house in Calgary had an indoor pool

i loved floating in the warm water under the skylights looking at the snow in the winter and enjoyed tanning on the porch and jumping into the cool water in the summer

lots of maintenance and you have to deal with all the humidity problems in the winter

but in my opinion, very worth while, especially in Canada

I would imagine the heating costs would be insane?

I have an outdoor pool and am thinking of throwing solar panels on the roof. The pool guy tells me I should get a couple of extra months out of it. I had an older propane heater and the cost was crazy, I could roll through a large tank in no time flat.

Q,
IMHO pools are more of a pain in the ass than they're worth. Constant maintenance and upkeep. Unless you're a swimmin' mofo

Throw down a 12 person tub and call it a day bro.

if this pool is being built for a ski resort in BC...just have a huge outdoor heated pool..and lots of jacuzzis inside... i know after boarding all day, my ass is hurting and would love to just soak in something hot. I think people love to sit in a hot pool of water outside and enjoy the scenery without windows....i do

Don't indoor pools put alot of moisture in the air and can cause mold in side the structure? Don't ya need dehumidifiers or something like that?

Here in Arizona.... I think it's a state law that everyone has a pool. Flying into Phoenix is funny; Every house has a pool.

I guess you could look around at the major resorts in BC and find a house that is 90% of what you want, and tell your builder, build me this.
