Of all the "end of the world" dystopian stories out there...

Which one do you think looks like something that might really happen?

This is one of my favourite movie/book genres. Thoughts?

Its set a little bit in the future, in a recognisable, yet alternative version of Oakland CA... Like I say, going into it blind is best, because it's not really about what it appears to be at all..

I like this genre quite a bit, too. The idea of destruction and rebirth has always fascinated me. The Phoenix.

I love these "end of the world" movies.... My favorite by far is "The Stand" by Stephen King. It's old but holds up good. In fact, I think I read they are making a movie out of it.

I honestly believe that the world will end either by disease like in The Stand, climate change, or a meteor hitting us.

I never understood the cult following with this movie. it's pretty stupid and deep as a puddle compared to Office Space. which is another movie mike judge did that was far superior.

More like she was butt ugly and tough as nails. However her books are the stuff of prophesy.

50+ years ago she literally predicted everything that we're now witnessing. When she was alive she hung out with people like Alan Greenspan.

Today her book Atlas Shrugged is considered a sort of bible by people such as Peter Theil, Jimmy Wales, John Mackey, and Paul Ryan.

So if you're ever in the mood to change the way you see the world then I highly recommend you read Ayan Rand.

I would think The Stand or any of those stories where a terrible disease has wiped out most of the population.

I used to think we would wipe ourselves out with nuclear weapons (and we still may) but these days I thing it is more likely some kind of bad disease will come along and do bad things.

To the OP... I say a random meteor strike that we don't see coming or Yellowstone erupts and takes us out..

I don't think we have to worry about a super bug as humans have always managed to live through those situations as there are always people who are immune.. Global warming is of course the biggest threat, but I don't think it will end life..

Idiocracy was a documentary about the current president and his fan base but even that dooms day had a happy ending..

ok so based on this thread, I watched Idiocracy last night.

Great movie, and under-rated too IMO. But it's a comedy, rather than a serious dystopian film which is more of what I was asking about.

Although she rejected the labels "conservative" and "libertarian",[178] Rand has had continuing influence on right-wing politics and libertarianism.[11] Jim Powell, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, considers Rand one of the three most important women (along with Rose Wilder Lane and Isabel Paterson) of modern American libertarianism,[179] and David Nolan, one of the founders of the Libertarian Party, stated that "without Ayn Rand, the libertarian movement would not exist".[180] In his history of the libertarian movement, journalist Brian Doherty described her as "the most influential libertarian of the twentieth century to the public at large"[161] and biographer Jennifer Burns referred to her as "the ultimate gateway drug to life on the right".[181] Economist and Ayn Rand student George Reisman wrote: "Ayn Rand...in particular, must be cited as providing a philosophical foundation for the case of capitalism, and as being responsible probably more than anyone else for the current spread of pro-capitalist ideas."[182]

She faced intense opposition from William F. Buckley, Jr. and other contributors for the National Review magazine. They published numerous criticisms in the 1950s and 1960s by Whittaker Chambers, Garry Wills, and M. Stanton Evans. Nevertheless, her influence among conservatives forced Buckley and other National Review contributors to reconsider how traditional notions of virtue and Christianity could be integrated with support for capitalism.[183]

The political figures who cite Rand as an influence are usually conservatives (often members of the Republican Party),[184] despite Rand taking some positions that are atypical for conservatives, such as being pro-choice and an atheist.[185] A 1987 article in The New York Times referred to her as the Reagan administration's "novelist laureate".[186] Republican Congressmen and conservative pundits have acknowledged her influence on their lives and have recommended her novels.[187]

The financial crisis of 2007–2008 spurred renewed interest in her works, especially Atlas Shrugged, which some saw as foreshadowing the crisis.[188] Opinion articles compared real-world events with the plot of the novel.[189] During this time, signs mentioning Rand and her fictional hero John Galt appeared at Tea Party protests.[190] There was also increased criticism of her ideas, especially from the political left, with critics blaming the economic crisis on her support of selfishness and free markets, particularly through her influence on Alan Greenspan.[191] For example, Mother Jones remarked that "Rand's particular genius has always been her ability to turn upside down traditional hierarchies and recast the wealthy, the talented, and the powerful as the oppressed"[185] while equating Randian individual well-being with that of the Volk according to Goebbels. Corey Robin of The Nation alleged similarities between the "moral syntax of Randianism" and fascism.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayn_Rand

And when I hear libetarian, then my understanding of that word today is:
"I am happy when I can make money, no pesky laws disturb me while doing that, I rather not pay taxes, not carry any responsibilities towards anyone not as fortunate as me and I don't give a fuck how you all make it as long as I do well."

I can't name one Woody Allen movie I've seen.
You've probably seen this Woody Allen film at some point, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask)"... comedy from 1972. Was constantly played through the 70's and 80's on TV''s across Canada later at night.

Then you don't understand it maybe that just needs re-labelling to 'alt-libertarian', unless we can now take the extreme left positions and call those 'liberal'

disclaimer I'm 'soft' libertarian I guess, with a dash of Classic Liberal. Much like all political parties, I agree with some positions, disagree with others, and certain aspects stop me from ever actually voting for any of them.

'Curb gov't overreach' is the main reason if I had a gun to my head I'd vote libertarian above any of the others.

Well, Classic Liberalism is far different than what liberalism means in the US today. But.. yeah, and mention you have conservative outlooks on any given subject, and half of the americans want you dead because you are a 'nazi'.

I say 'half', but ofc it's just the vocal extreme idiots on either side, like crockett or that other tool optics or whatever the handle is here as examples from both extremes, and the outliers than the media love to splash all over the news because 80% of everyone else says 'w t f.. so *thats* what the 'other side' is like'.

As for that wikipedia article.. that's basically presenting people with opposing viewpoints (and not even mentioning the viewpoints, or the opposing ones), as some sort of factual info on the person themselves.

fact: hitler ordered millions of jews killed

opinion on some website: many who agreed with hitler said he had the right idea.

Weeelll.. it's true that those who shared his ideas, shared his ideas, but to read just that opinion gives zero info on who or what he was.

I can go to multiple sites if I so wished, and read about those who disagree with obama, or bernie sanders, or any other person that the left warm to, saying 'person x disagreed with many of person y's views and policies blahblahthismeansjackshit'.

Then I can post somewhere that 'when I hear 'democrats' my understanding is that they want to spend trillions they don't have on illegal immigrants and druggies and scroungers as long as those trillions are taken from the big bad corporations who pay NO tax, and they want to spend it all on safe spaces so they don't hear words that may injure them, and also some other disingenuous stuff here'.

Whereas if I actually looked, I'd find that there were plenty of things I agree with them on, even though there are plenty I don't - instead of listening to media sound bites and trying to blast everyone on the right or left, no matter how moderate, and contributing to the divide

then your understanding is flawed.

one thing is sure - and that is not limited to either side of the political spectrum - is that media has become far too biased.

we wouldn't have this kind of divide if not both sides had their outlets and those only riding certain talking points that suit their agenda.

if then someone tends to listen/read/watch a single source of news only, we end up where we are now.
