Slavery, and the fear that it would be abolished, was the primary reason for the Civil War. Listed as the first reason in the declarations of secession for most of the southern states that seceeded.

The immediate catalyst for secession was the victory of the Republican Party and the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in the 1860 elections. American Civil War historian James M. The Civil War, as documented, by their own words, in the various Confederate States declarations of causes was First and Foremost about Slavery.

History has been revised, across time, to frame it as "States Rights" but the primary "States Right" was Slavery and the fact the North wanted to get rid of it while the South wanted to keep it.
