Do you know anyone doing serious prison time?

Damn, just got the news last night. One of my old homeboys from back in the day just got sentenced to life plus 45 years. It's fucked up how a bad decision can affect your life forever.

Here's today's article from ajc.com (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
Driver sentenced in getaway crash

Melvin Mitchell, 23, of Atlanta was sentenced to life plus 45 years Monday after being convicted in a Fayetteville grocery store robbery and high-speed chase that resulted in the death of an innocent man. Mitchell and his twin brother, Marvin, robbed the Fayetteville Ingles on March 31, 2002, and were chased by police until they collided with a sport utility vehicle and killed the driver, veterinarian Jason Trotman of Union City. Melvin Mitchell was the getaway driver. Marvin Mitchell was convicted in a separate trial last week and sentenced to life plus 25 years.

life + 45 years?

wtf? Why the extra 45 after you're dead?
Or is life actually life? In finland life is like 15 or 25.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time...

Hell, they might as well give him the death sentence and save us all some cash in the long run...

Wow. Quite the sentence. It's sad when "worse crimes" get off with much less.

It looks like the justice system is finally putting its foot down. Or maybe that's more common in the South?

The extra years in prison don't really mean anything. After you pass away, you're removed from the prison anyways.

I have no reason why they say stuff like "Life sentence plus an additional 30 years".

1 uncle in prison for the last 20 years for an assortment of crimes ranging from drug trafficking to attempted murder. Gets out next month.

Another uncle doing 7 years for manslaughter, served 2 so far.

Couple cousins in for short stints for drug and theft related offenses.

Its like a right of passage on my fathers side of the family.

A bad decision is buying a Pontiac Aztek......Bro these people have killed someone. Bad people not a bad decision. Killing an innocent educated man for no other reason than greed.

I hope they get railed inthwe ass all day every day until they die a fucking unmerciful death.

Oh no doubt they were wrong. Do you think anyone who commits a crime thinks about all the repercussions or plans to get caught? That's what I mean by bad decisions. They didn't go planning to be in a high speed chase that day and kill someone. Just like if you drove home from the club a little wasted, you may make it home alright...or you could crash and kill a mother and her kids. In all parts of life, sometimes it's one thing you choose that determines everything else that happens.

As opposed to an uneducated innocent man? Which would make it ok?

I was casually dating what seemed to be a very well groomed and polite military officer way back in the day....

He said he had something to tell me, and that he was going to court the next day.

At this point... I'm thinking drunk driving or something.

His response: Second Degree murder of my ex girlfriend, but I didn't do it.

My response: I left something in the car, be right back.... I got the hell out of dodge.

He was convicted and as far as I know still rotting in prison.

When my dad was 53 (9 years ago) he was sentenced to 65 years and 1 day. with the 65 years in the state of Indiana he would have been eligible for parole in 12 years.

Where he was sentenced didn't believe in the death penalty so it took the jury 3 days to figure out his sentence. The 1 day they gave him messed everything up for him because now he has to serve the whole 65 years and 8 hours of the day to be eligible for parole.

His crimes were:

Rape
Murder
Stolen Car (mine)
Identity theft (mine again)
Theft via forgery (stole my bank book)

Although he is my dad I cannot condone anything he did. The day they sentenced him to prison was the last time he ever seen my face. I have 3 bullet wounds from the girl he killed brothers coming after me because they thought I was the suspect (I have my fathers name )

So in the end the jury did the best thing for him. Thier sentencing was read as such:

rape = 65 years
murder = 1 day
Stolen Car (mine) = he would never see me agin they knew this from the testimony in court. And he could sit in prison for the rest of his life and wonder why even his family will have nothing to do with him.

Identity theft (mine again) = same as above

Theft via forgery (stole my bank book) = same as above

Too bad his twin brother was in the car with him or he could have blamed him.

Multiple charges means multiple appeals. So if he beats the life sentence he's still got 45.

When you are sentanced in the US the amount of time you are sentanced to can be served in jail or on parole. People who get life sentances are eligable for parole in 20 years. So if he got life + 45 years he will probably actually be in jail for 25-35 years or so and then on parole for the rest of his life.

My friend & family got sentenced to big numbers for the biggest drug bust in massachusetts history.

My boy got 18 years in jail because he took plea.

Hi brother got 30+ years because he also took a plea.

His sister got 5 years in jail for being the alleged money holder.

His 2 nephew's, one of them got life in jail for being the alleged kingpin and the other got 3 1/2 years for having a smaller role.

Another newphew has not gotten sentenced yet.

A friend that grew up with us got 3 1/2 years.

A friend died in jail awaiting trial.

Another friend got 30 years in jail because he already had 2 strikes.

Anyways it was a total of 22 people that got busted and most of them was family and long time friends that grew up together.

They got busted with 260 kilos of cocaine that was coming from Arizona in tractortrialer. The Dea and the fbi having been watching them for over 10 years.

It was so big it even came out in CNN and in the DEA website.

He got an understanding from me if it was my sister I would have done the same thing he did.

The police let him go because I refused to press charges (he paid for the damages of shooting my truck up).
