Good God What A Damn Virus!!!!!

Can someone PLEASE tell me exactly what the hell to do to get XP off of my laptop? It came with ME and I am selling it today, but wanna sell it in it's original OS, so I need to get XP off of it. I have tried fdisk: bad command, format c: bad command

I have spent the last 5 hours trying to remove this damn deadly ass virus....... does ANYONE have any ideas? I know this has been discussed but I can't find it........

    Thanks,
    Tam

well, you could boot off a Win98 CD and run fdisk from there, or you could boot off the WinXP CD and remove the partitions form there as well and format it then.

        Always works for me

Use the following 5 step plan of action

            (1) Remove Hard-drive from Laptop
            (2) Smah Hard-drive with hammer
            (3) Throw remaining hard-drive peices in river.
            (4) Buy new HD
            (5) Install new HD in laptop

ok sorry about this........ boy, my head is going to explode...

Know where I can land a win98 boot disk? I have downloaded 4 and none of them work, it says the disk is wrong, remove it and hit any key

Everybody should own a copy of the Ultimate Boot Disk available here. It's free. There's nothing better, unless you make your own.

Sounds like you need to do a low level format. If you have any of the free utilities for your disk this should be easy enough. You can find them as free downloads on the net from the manufacturer's site. Several people recommend Drive Shuttle and PowerQuest utilities but I only go there after the free utilities provided by the manufacturer fail.

                              IBM

                              Maxtor

                              Seagate

                              Western Digital

Anyway, that's what I would do.

hmm fdisk/mbr is gonna get rid of the WinXP boot menu - isn't there an uninstall option when you boot the WinXP CD ? Or is that just repair ?

I have a choice of repair, upgrade or clean install and that's it, tried that too.

Up until I started doing the webmaster thing I used to format and crash a computer just to be doing it. I am famous for hitting that "red button" to see what it will do....... so I would crash the shit to be doing it. So I am not a total nut when it comes to a pc, and I have literally tried everything I know to try at this point. I found an fdisk program and ran that, thinking I could just bring it all back up with my WinME disk............. however, when I rebooted, there was XP again...........

                                    IT WILL NOT GO AWAY!!!!!!

what you could do is to bot off a ME/98 CD, fdisk/mbr to get rid of the WinXP boot menu (if there is any) and then delete the darn WinXP folder - then install ME/ OS of choice

Just some ideas, have not done more than played with XP, but as you seem at a loss:

                                        delete command.com

disconnect internal battery on mother board so your BIOS is erased

go into system registry delete everything in there

                                        delete config.* and autoexec.*

follow pr0's suggestion (which would mean problem fixed by now)

Usually, laps come with a recovery CD, this disk will erase anything on the hd and return the thing to all factory settings. You either have that disk, or you can get it from a compaq vendor.

look around your old CD's and see if you can find it.

                                                Or:

do you happen to own a win 98/ME CD?

go to your bios setup, find the part of it where it says booting sequence, (or similar) it should have a list of the drives. move your page up key until your CD drive is the first one of the list.

insert your win 98/ME CD and reboot.

the cd will boot the puter just as a boot disk, and it will give you the options to install.

                                                Enjoy

Know where I can land a win98 boot disk? I have downloaded 4 and none of them work, it says the disk is wrong, remove it and hit any key

How'd you actually find the any key? ;)

If you have the ME install disk,

                                                      boot into DOS

Type Format C /SYS or something similar. Look up the right command so that it will leave your system files, then boot of the 98/ME disk or whatever and do a fresh install.

If you converted to NTFS when you installed XP, that is why you can't just "uninstall" and return to the previous version.

Put the format, fdisk, del etc commands on a floppy and run it from there. See if that works.
