I lived there 5 years... it's basically a place where the wealthy go to die... ehehe... there's not much of a nightlife but the beaches are beautiful and you're very very close to Delray Beach on the north and Deefield beach on the south... you have a lot to choose from if you don't mind a short commute -- but I can't really recommend anywhere to live ;) To me at least Deerfield Beach seems like more of a younger area... most of Boca by the ocean is for the ultra wealthy ;) so the further you go west the cheaper the apts probably are... and the further away from Mizner Park you are the cheaper everything will be... there's two main access points to the Boca beaches -- Palmetto and Spanish River -- and FAU is on Spanish River I think... everything closes early in Boca -- even the Walmart isn't 24 hours like in the rest of the world -- the only place open late is Dennys...
How about UCF in Orlando....
Thats were I live it rocks down here.Far moving its not that bad. There are so many hot girls..And every one is looking for romates. You could get away with around 300 a month if you do that. Jobs are easy to get down here because of so many tourist.
, all jobs start at $11 and thats on the low end.
Oh did I mention,,,, All the hot girls
Boca Raton is a planned community -- so if you don't mind living in the ultimate of suburbs -- go for it.
One of my co-workers lives in Boca, and from what I know, he likes it up there, although I think he somewhat misses the excitement of living in a real city.
I don't know much about FAU in Boca - but I think they have a campus in Fort Lauderdale.
As far as nightlife in Boca -- there isn't any -- you'll have to drive to either Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach.
Like FLY said, if you want anything reasonably priced in Boca -- you'll probably end up being in the western part of town... nowhere near the ocean -- which to me, defeats the purpose of living in South Florida.
I live in Fort Lauderdale about a mile from the ocean, and I wouldn't choose anywhere else. It might not have the "class" of Boca -- but it's affordable, and my neighbors are nice enough to at least say "hello" every once in awhile.
I did some search on the net, and apartments around the school are not that expensive. Seems like $500 will get me a room in 3B apartment. As for FAU, people says it will be sucks to transfer from UF to there... I guess i have to check all USF, UCF and Fau to see the campuses and compare them.
Boca seems like a boring place but it is near the beach and there are cool places such as miami, ft lauderdale around it. I don't mind driving 15-20 mins to go to clubs etc.

Flash, if I am not mistaken you used to live in gainesville. Is boca worser than gainesville?
If you do go to school and have transportation, living in Deerfield is more cost effective. Plus, there are a ton of new places built close to I95 on Hillsborough closer to State Rd 7 or 441.
Two streets up on I95 and you are right there at school.
I grew up around Coral Springs, and after the military lived in Deerfield, Boca area till moving up here to Vancouver. It's a beautiful area, but it is seriously over populated now.
It's been about 2 years now since I've been back, but nothing really should have changed. =o)
I live in Boca Raton
From Ft. Lauderdale originally.
Say what you want, South Florida is beautiful. Boca is nice, over priced, but very well kept and safe (save for the 80+ year old drivers a meer annoyance), it's not all old people. In fact, Boca is within 10 miles of Coral Springs, the fastest groing family communities on the East Coast.
Boca is a good central location between West Palm and Ft. Lauderdale. Nightlife is night life, I live across the street from a night club and there mare monthly FETISH parties here (largest in Florida) where Playboy's TV's Sexterra will be filming this weekend. I'm 5 minutes from the beach and the tons of night life and activities in Ft. Lauderdale. I like being close, just not in the middle of it. It's really nice here.
BTW: Boca Raton means the Rat's Mouth in Spanish, named for the shape of the coastline in the area.
Deerfield is more cost effective and surrounding areas are nice as well (Delray Beach, Coral Springs, WPB).
I lived in Gainesville for 3 years, about 4 years ago. You cannot compare a small college town to a greater suburban metropolis. Gainesville is beautiful, but if you're not there for a reason (school, intership) you are going NOWHERE in life. That town has very few money making opp's.
Living in Boca is nice, but there is more value and just as nice places in the surrounding areas. There are much WORSE places to be that's for sure (old ft. lauderdale, miami, boynton). Just chose your residence carefully. There are just as many shitty places to live here as there are nice. Also, don't more too far out west, it's a bitch drive east west in rush hour.
Indeed it is, South Florida is nice right now. I live in Fort. Lauderdale and wouldn't wanna live anywhere else. Well maybe ATL...if only they had a beach.

Where is old Fort Lauderdale? For that matter, I didn't know there was a new Fort Lauderdale.
Yes - you gotta love living in South Florida -- the only place that comes close to it (in my mind) is Minneapolis / St Paul. The only problem with the Twin Cities is it gets SOOOO DAMN COLD in the winter.
Ever been along Dixie Highway? By Andrews Ave between Oakland and Commercial? How about between Sunrise and Broward downtown? UGH! That's OLD
Newer, nicer areas are either on the beach/intracoastal or out west. I've watched the area grow for the past 25 years. Trust me, there is an OLD ft.lauderdale area and you do NOT want to live there

HEY HEY HEY -- I happen to live a block off Dixie Hwy -- halfway between 13th & 26th street (south of the "5 points" intersection in Wilton Manors).
True - I suppose the real estate agents would call it an "up and coming neighborhood", but it's quiet enough (aside from the occassional train). Everyone in the neighborhood is friendly -- there's an active neighborhood association. And as one of my completely insensitive neighbors pointed out -- "the gays are moving in - so the neighborhood must be getting better".
Either way, I'd still take it over living in the suburbs. I lived in western Sunrise for over a year.. yes, it was a nice neighborhood -- but all the people were so stuck up -- they were impossible to talk and relate to. As far as the "quiet suburbs" -- the constant traffic from Oakland Park Blvd & the Sawgrass Expressway was deafening.
And no... there's rarely a problem with smog.... the worst is usually smoke from a wild fire in the western part of the county - but that's a rare event.
DONT TRANSFER FROM UF TO FAU! Oh shit you will be miserable. FAU is a fucking crappy crappy ass school. Half the professors hardly speak english and even more of the students are from india, pakistan, etc. etc... (India pays the students to go to FAU -- and FAU pays the indian students to come there -- so there are LOT of indian people there) and you won't understand a fucking thing they are saying half the time. The entire school reeks of odor -- did you know that FAU used to be a military base/airport? They just converted the abandon base into a college! It's one of the most depressing places I've ever taken classes (in high school I did dual enrollment there)... as for a campus -- it's non-existant -- it's more like a giant landing strip made to look like a parking lot w/ classrooms...
I went to UF -- and like the Orlando guy said -- girls girls girls -- most everyone in downtown Gainesville is young -- the beer is cheap -- there's lots of places to go out at night... Last night I was out w/ my girlfriend in LA and she's complaining that the music scene here sucks compared to little Gainesville, FL... It's really a little gem of a place to live. There are a lot of frat/sorority types in GV but because it's Florida there are really many different kinds of people from all over the world. Very little traffic, cheap rent, cheap restuarants, cheap women, lots to do at night, house parties all the time, clean air, most importantly hot girls everywhere wearing very little, and of course the warm sunny weather -- damn I miss it... As for no jobs in GV -- this is true -- but who gives a shit if you are an adult webmaster! I talked to a guy in LA once that lived in Manhattan beach -- he fondly remembered his Gainesville days as the best times in his life. It was fun listening to him talk about all the fun he had there -- it makde me miss the place even more...
There is a legend in Gainesville -- that nobody can escape... Hehe...

man, i agree that gainesville is a cool town for the house parties and easy chicks. But it is a really small town. I have been living here for 2 years now, and i am really bored to go out the same clubs, go thru the same shit all the time. I need a change, and unfortunately, in order to not lose some of my already earned credits i should stay in florida. I will keep in mind all you guys input when i make my final desicion..
