				Need Hard Drive Advices
Hi, My main drive, a 10000 RPM 300G Western Digital VelociRaptor is making some clicking sounds. It will probably die any day so I need to replace it. First thing I need to decide is if I'm going for another 10k RPM or a SSD ? Also I'll need to mirror my current drive to my new one, what is the easiest way to do this? I guess I'll need a software that can create a boot cd? thanks! |

				 | Don't waste your money on old-style mechanical hard drives anymore. Your main drive and main storage drive should be 100% pure SSD. You will cry like a little girl when you see how freakin' fast it is. It's more expensive but worth every penny. You should only buy a mechanical hard drive for cheap secondary storage of files that you rarely have to access, like old archives, etc.

				 | Operating System and installed software SSD I use 3 * 1TB SATA 6.0 4 drives total for most storage. 1 SATA is primarily a back up drive but these are not the normal home computers. I had drive clicking problems with one of the computers here -- turns out the mobo is bad -- MSI [5 yrs old] is on my shit list. My computers with Asus Motherboards have given me no grief (so far 6yrs and 3 years) Gut the ANTEC case and rebuild: ASUS mobo, AMD 8 core, 250 SSD boot drive 32G RAM and 2 * 2TB SATA 6.0 that board will have better USB3 support than just the USB3 PCI card I added. |

				 | Grab yourself a 500 gig ssd, read reviews to find a good one, migration software is normally included. Also, get a 1Tb regular drive and start making backups!

				 | Hope it is not the board. When I shut the pc for a few minutes then restart, I get rid of them. Then they come back after a day or two. |

				 | IDK -- I had to replace the power supply to get it to boot. Board is OK now but 2 1TB Seagates [old SATA 3 HHD] are bad. Little data loss most is backed up -- that is what matters. A newer Hitachi was detected OK. I never liked that comp with that board anyway. I need to build a new primary work station anyway. AMD 8 core 32GB RAM 1 SSD 5 SATA -- I can reuse that case I picked up a 250GB Samsung SSD EVO [MZ-75E250B/AM] for $68 on a special deal at Amazon. 218.3 GB free with the o/s Ubuntu 16.04 with the basic software I use -- (no servers yet) on my old workstation -- still very usable now with the new SSD and more memory. they are $89 USD now 500GB$158 USD $185 CAD is less Even though the other one is working -- I am going to gut it and reuse the case (ANTEC). Keep the working memory cards as spares for the older comps. newegg.com has an Intel 480GB SSD for $142 hmm never used one ... The problem I have always had with buying all the parts for a new computer was researching and shopping. But in 10 custom builds they have served me pretty well. |

				 | This is my board: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P7...pecifications/ so I don't have these M.2 slots. Now I have to figure out if I actually want to replace my HD or get a whole new computer with 2016 technologies lol |

				 | I use these in my iMacs for the main drive. Crucial MX300 750GB SSD They offer good price/performance. You won't need a special interface as they're SATA III. |

				 | My servers have been using SSD for quite a while now. My desktop/laptop still use mechanical cause they haven't died yet and I use a backup drive in case they do. When they die will go SSD on them as well. |
