Ill probably be posting some questions to home owners as to what floors and cabinets to get.

We were looking at hardwood cherry throughout.
But does that look bad? Is it too dark? ANd Dark Grannite countertops.

Too dark?

Hardwood Cherry is beautiful but prone to drying out, if it's well taken care of it will please you for many years to come. Granite countertops would be nice... they are only too dark if you make the rest of the room dark.. it's a nice contrast to put dark granite with light, airy walls, otherwise it looks too imposing. Check out a bunch of home design magazines n stuff, decorating resources, and see what you guys like best. The beautiful thing getting a house built is that you can pretty much do what you want and don't have to fix up someone else's ideas.. you can start from scratch. Congrats, Boneprone.

Headless, I live in a little log cabin and I LOVE it! Even if I move, I'll build another one. It's small and it's a dovetail D-log. If I ever get out to wilderness out west, I'd love to build a handhewn one with those HUGE logs (no jokes from the peanut gallery). I have drywall interior walls so I can paint, but wood ceilings with exposed beams. When it rains on that tin roof, it's WAY cool

Boneprone - hire a professional designer. Growing up we built or gutted and rebuilt every house we ever lived in and my mother ALWAYS had a designer on hand. They REALLY help with selecting the right colors, materials, appliances, contractors, etc. NOT an interior decorator (though you can get one of those, too ), a designer works more with the nuts and bolts - like floors and countertops

I hate to break it to you sweetie but you're going to get nicked for way more than 10 or 20k to get what you want...

It's pretty easy to run up a 100k in upgrades real fast on things like stone, flooring and cabinetry --

Actually, my aunt and uncle have a log cabin, complete with outhouse! :-)

There are a few log cabin kits that you can get for about 14k.

I reccomend that you get http://www.americanhomeshield.com/home.jsp when you finish. It will be the best thing you've ever done. Everyone I tell about them thank me for the info.

I give you an example of how good AHS is. I purchased a house 3 years ago. Not the best house but it had walls. So a friend of mine told me about AHS. Oh my it was the best thing I've ever done. When I purchased the house it came with Washer/Dryer/6 burner stove, and a large refrigerator. Well seven months after I purchased the house the oven on the stove burnt out. With the price of stoves these days I was a little worried. It's the last thing I wanted to do was buy a new stove. So I called AHS, two days later a repair man came over. He told me the job is going to cost $280 but all I have to pay is $36 dollars. I couldn't believe it, that was great.

Then just eight months ago my washer died. No spincycle or nothing. I forgot all about AHS. My wife made the call and the repair guy came over. He said it was the first time he seen a pump on a Maytag die, and that it could not be replaced. I thought I was going to have to go out and buy a new washer. That day AHS called me up and asked me what type of washer I would like. I couldn't believe it two day's later AHS delivered me a new Maytag washer better and deeper than the one we owned. The bill for the new washer was $36 dollars.

I totally recommend them it's the greatest investment in home appliance insurance that you will ever make. http://www.americanhomeshield.com/home.jsp

And congrats on the new house.

We are adding over 2000 sq feet to our home.

So far $ 5000 for the county fees
over $ 5000 for the back hoe guy

around $53,000 for the construction guy to build and frame to a bare shell.

Hub is doing the electric, floor, bathroom, carpet and rest of finish work and we have not even priced anything yet for that.

Just research if it will scratches easy if you have dogs in your house. My neighbor has an oak floor and it is trashed from letting her dogs in the house

Boneprone - as an adult female, that pic of the cherry floor and cabinet kitchen you posted looks gorgeous.
But as a mom, it looks like lots of trips to the hospital from little people in socks running, slipping, and crashing headlong into the corner of something.
If you're planning on having kids, you might want to have the place carpeted the instant the test comes back positive.

Headless, I'm a log cabin nut myself. Always wanted to live in a log cabin on the side of a mountain surrounded by trees with a big wrap-around porch and tall ceiling windows with white sheer curtains blowing in the breeze... ahhhh

Take a look here:

It would look nice, and make sure to get the granite tops because you can cut anything on those unlike marble if you cut an orange, it will leave stains. Just FYI.

Wood floors are very nice but require some maintenance every few years and yeah they can be scratched or dented if you drop something on it.

Marble floors are nice also and not so prone to damage. If you get granite counter tops, chances are you can get granite or marble flooring to match. My new house in vegas has big 20 inch marble tiles thru half of it, looks very nice

My wife and I just had Maple put in at ~$6/SqFt. If you're in SoCal, I'll give you the info, if you'd like.

We were looking at hardwood cherry throughout.
But does that look bad? Is it too dark? ANd Dark Grannite countertops.

Too dark?
BP, congrats on the new house. And welcome to your neverending upkeep.

My house was just completed (1500SqFt addition, pretty much new everything) so if you have any questions, hit me up.

I went with maple for my kitchen/dining area. It's light and bright. On that side of the house, most of the wood I've used for furniture etc, is light... washed oak and light oak. The woods in the rest of the house are all dark cherry (I mean dark..not red red). When I repaint the main part of the house in the next year or so, I'm thinking of having the existing painted crown molding removed and replaced with finished cherry crown moldings to match the wood in the furniture.

No, but she can determine from photos.

This is what she said, when I asked her if she could do it via photos, e-mail, telephone.

"All I need is a budget, what your looking for and photographs."
