I like(d) Prince, like most of his tracks, etc. What I can't understand is my facebook feed full of people saying they are 'very sad', 'shocked', and so on.
Really? I don't want to come across as an insensitive dick, but people who have never met him, and only listen to his music, are 'very sad'? It's obviously a choker for his friends and family, so in that respect yes, it is very sad (never nice to see or know about people in emotional pain)... but... but... I just can't help feeling people love a good celebrity death so they can spout how very sad they are, and probably DO feel very sad, just for reasons to so with being part of a collective rather than any actual personal sadness. Genuine question, and hope it doesn't cause offence to anyone - I've always been curious at this sadness though, and never understood it at all. I'd like to, so if anyone feels like typing it out, I'd be grateful ![]() |

In regards to your questions I relate their sadness to what I feel whenever I hear/see someone I liked via media, etc. that is recently dead. For example: Robin Williams. Whenever I see a movie of his available on Netflix etc. I can't watch, makes me sad because I know he's dead rotting somewhere, and I know he killed himself. Know what I mean? |

I can hear a song and instantly be back in time to a point in my life when that song was popular or meant something to me. That's the reason people feel a lot of sadness when a musician whose music they loved dies. It's not so much that they are feeling sad in the same way as his family is...it's more of a "part of me" died kind of sadness. |

You can't find a lot of Prince stuff on Youtube...even with Vevo or whatever.
Today every jackass put up fake prince youtube videos with their own music band on them...raking in the ad dollars |

I'm deeply sad about his passing. It takes me back to feeling and seeing mortality in action. His passing takes me back to his very special music and the (what Milan Kundera would call) 'special moments' in my life his music was apart of. Memories of people, places and dear friends all came rushing back to me when I heard the news. Our growing up together, partying together, laughing, loving, fucking and learning together, his music often being a backdrop, a soundscape to it all. Since I did not know him its more about my experiences with his music and the affect it has had over me in the past decades. It's a sad day for the funk. Long live the funk. R.I.P. Prince |

Sure but MJ was very mainstream and very pop. Prince was very diverse (rnb, funk, jazz, pop, etc), alternative and a complete genius. Massive catalogue, some of his greatest work never got recognised and never even hit the charts.

Got his music on tapes yet, I was a kid, got me the only book one could get here about him. I was fascinated, by his abilities, by his drive, by his creativity, by his style, by the art of provocation and how he could market himself, by his flamboyant persona, his womanizer skills, by the way he could keep control over his business. Don't forget today he should still be in top 2 best earning musicians all around. There's hardly been anybody in popular music that I would consider a more all around genius (Jimi Hendrix comes close perhaps), a creative force, somebody who is able to handle 20 instruments, and not in a mediocre way, somebody who can just have fun and kill it completely, even if he just had fun it many times turned out unforgettable (have some live jams in my discography too). Have CD's, concerts, old tapes, compilations, pretty much everything I could get my hands on. And very few of it ever disappointed me (he released some very "experimental" stuff also). It's his music that never got old for me, his music that always fueled me, him as a role model that was able to come out of Minneapolis to absolutely dominate the 80's. Him who was instrumental in endorsing many talented musicians giving them head start in the business, a man behind many bands, many projects, behind the success of many artists. And yes his music is my favorite sex background too. It took me long years to be able to see him live, I was in Las Vegas in 2007 when he owned 3121 and wanted to join in yet my Euro card was declined to get one of those last two tickets, and they accepted no cash. Took me three more years to see him live in Vienna 2010, once I found out there's a concert I got me the most expensive tickets I could buy (he still reserved the best spots always for those from his official fanclub only) - and it was a concert that lasted 2 hours 45 minutes. Three parts - one his old stuff, one his newer stuff, and one just for jams and for his band to have fun. It was a fantastic concert, with 5 encores, you could see how much does he enjoy to play, and how much does he value his audience, how each song, no matter if old or new sounded completely unique, revived, you could see a genius on stage. And I was also looking forward to his memoirs after it was announced, there's just so much to explore yet, and so much that would come. So yes, I'm very, very sad, it may sounds odd, but I'm feeling quite miserable since yesterday, in fact it's really comparable with losing somebody close. I guess if you lose somebody or something you enjoy so much, something that means so much to you, somebody who always made you feel better - his music always made me feel better, his presence always made me feel better, always inspired me, and it would always will. So yes it feels like one of the favorite parts of my life is gone, not completely since he left quite a legacy, but the source is gone and it's hard to get used to it. ![]()

I was down at First Avenue last night(where most of Purple Rain was shot). It was a pretty powerful experience. The streets were shut down around the club and 1000's of people got together to sing Prince songs. All while all lights that could be turned to Purple throughout the city where. Things went until 7am. This is going to be happening all weekend here.

Here is one of his bad moments when he was in his early 20's.
It was a moment that should have been magical. He was in attendance at a James Brown concert. And so was Michael Jackson. James calls them both up. Michael sings a bit and kills it with a couple of dance moves. Then they call up Prince. And he was so wasted. lol He rides a guy like a horse to the stage...then he is rude to Michael and James (barely acknowledging them) and grabs a guitar and sort of tries to play...but he's too coked up. Then he strips his shirt off and acts "sexy" before trying to grab a light pole onstage that was just a prop and falling off stage with the light pole falling on the crowd. I'm thinking that when he looked back at this he regretted not being 100% for what could have been a great moment. Anyway, here's that footage of this once in a lifetime moment. The quality is horrible: |

Back in the day, I was a big fan of Prince and had lots of admiration for him. His song writing and musicianship was impeccable.
Michael Jackson was at the top of the world with Thriller, and untouchable. Then, along comes Prince and totally eclipses him. MJ was forgotten for a long while. Who else could have done that? Nobody. Prince could have rode that level of fame for many years. But, being the mysterious person he was, apparently he didn't want that. Instead, he chose to simply back away into the shadows after a while, and would disappear for years at a time. With his guitar playing alone, he could've easily been the next Jimi Hendrix, if he'd wanted to go that route. But again, he mysteriously didn't want that either. Musically, he could have done a lot of great things later in his career. But over the years, each single became more disappointing than the last. But he was living his life for himself, not for me, and I'm sure it was a full and rewarding one. Thanks for the memories, Prince, and RIP.

Can't compare the two in my opinion. One sang songs written by others in a pop setting. The other not only wrote his own shit, but played most instruments on every album. From a talent standpoint it really isn't a comparison. |

He was one of the most accomplished guitarists ever.
The lead in lick on when doves cry is one of the most incredible guitar parts ever. Really on a jimi Hendrix level, prince is, maybe even more so. |

There's no reason to get this way about it. This is an in memororiam thread for Prince. I and many others can see a comparison be him and Hendrix. I happen to think that in some ways he is a more accomplished guitarist than Hendrix. Get over the fact some gfy guitarist named dyna mo feels that way. My view truly has nothing to do with you.

Just too bad. Prince was one of the few talents remaining in the industry.
It's amazing what he created beyond the music too. Genius. If you get a chance listen to his song: "And God Created Woman"

A few important vids to show yall before they get taken down.
In 1985, there was not a bigger star than Prince. He was the biggest celebrity on earth. He was THE SHIT. And mysterious. With the internet, celebrities today are over-exposed. But back then, you may hear him say a few words on an awards show like the AMAs. And that was just about all you got. I don't think he ever did many interviews. His odd demeanor and soft-spokenness in this first video just added to the mystique. I think he was very overwhelmed at, and uncomfortable with the pedestal of fame he's been put on. Same show, killing it with Purple Rain. No pre-recorded backing track, no lip syncing. Epic. And then the Grammys, same year. EVERYONE was waiting for Prince to show up and do a song. But there was rumors that he had such a hectic concert schedule he probably couldn't make it. So when he did show up, everybody was like YESSS! He does "Baby I'm a Star" and just floored everyone. You'll never see the likes of this again. My GF, who wasn't even born then, seems jealous of all the attention I've been giving Prince lately. I'm still sad about his death. A part of my childhood and a part of my heart died with him. RIP Prince.

Some great videos MFCT
Btw. here's another Prince's song that was live on that American Music Awards evening - "When you were mine" by Cyndi Lauper - a fantastic performance.
