Back in the day, I was a big fan of Prince and had lots of admiration for him. His song writing and musicianship was impeccable.
Michael Jackson was at the top of the world with Thriller, and untouchable. Then, along comes Prince and totally eclipses him. MJ was forgotten for a long while. Who else could have done that? Nobody.
Prince could have rode that level of fame for many years. But, being the mysterious person he was, apparently he didn't want that. Instead, he chose to simply back away into the shadows after a while, and would disappear for years at a time.
With his guitar playing alone, he could've easily been the next Jimi Hendrix, if he'd wanted to go that route. But again, he mysteriously didn't want that either. Musically, he could have done a lot of great things later in his career. But over the years, each single became more disappointing than the last.
But he was living his life for himself, not for me, and I'm sure it was a full and rewarding one. Thanks for the memories, Prince, and RIP.
