How Moscow's 'metro dogs' have learned to navigate the city's subways: Canine senses help them master complex routes, claims scientist

Most commuters won?t bat an eye at seeing an animal scurry off into the shadows of the subway.
But in Moscow, some animals have left the shadows behind to join strap-hangers right on the train for their daily commute.
Roughly two dozen ?metro dogs? navigate the Moscow subway system.
They somehow know which stops to get on and off, and can identify the humans that are more likely to hand over a treat - and now one scientists says she knows why.

Why are the animals allowed to roam around? Couldn't they be considered a liability?

As the article says there are roughly 35,000 stray dogs in Moscow and only about 20 of them have learned on how to use the subway for traveling. So it's not like you can see those dogs in every metro train.

On the other hand, 35,000 stray dogs is really a lot. Moscow is one of the hugest megalopolises on the planet (it's larger than NYC and LA combined together). A lot of people live there, so there is a lot of homeless dogs and cats too. Unfortunately we have not enough municipal shelters to fit them all.
