Law enforcement authorities responded to calls that there was an active shooter on campus at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, at roughly 10:38 a.m. PDT. Ten people were killed and 20 more were injured. The shooter reportedly open fire in one building on campus before moving to the school?s science building. Victims were found in at least two buildings. Mercer allegedly asked people to stand up and state their religion, and then started firing, the News-Review, a local newspaper for Douglas County, Oregon, reported." |

i might offer up a new angle. that all these spree shooters are early 20 something white males who are depressed/angry that the only happy place, is cyberspace.
its a millenial thing, tied to the use of SSRI meds. yep, it comes back to big pharma poisoning our kids developing brains with unproven meds. this didnt happen to previous generations, before SSRI's. newtown shooter, colorado shooter, VA tech shooter, the santa barbara wingnut last year, all took these meds im sure of it. they were all seeing shrinks, & the only thing shrinks do anymore is sell drugs. no gun laws are gonna stop a drug & culture induced epidemic.  |

This problem is going nowhere and it is only going to get worse. No gun law is going to stop it unless it's aimed directly at the manufacturing and lobbying groups. Unfortunately, there are already way too many guns out there to see any decline of these incidents in the foreseeable future.
Personally, I have no problem with hunting rifles, shotguns and handguns. I support more extensive background checks on those who want to obtain them. We are never going to stop people from doing harm with those if they choose to do so, but there is absolutely no need for assault weapons or any other firearm that can shoot off more than five or six rounds. There needs to be a complete ban on the manufacturing and possession of such. This includes weapons that can be reloaded quickly or modified to accept clips. |

Sad how much in denial people are about America's problem. The United States shares a border with a very similar population, Canada. Canada per capita has the same number of young anti-social male losers as the US, same number per capita of Canadian kids on SSRI's for ADD and depression and the rest of the mental illnesses popularly diagnosed by doctors these days, we watch the same TV shows, listen to the same music, we play the same violent video games, we have the same divorce rate, the same drug/alcohol problems - there is very little of much substance that separates Americans and Canadians except ONE thing ......
Gun culture. Not even blaming guns, gun owners didn't create the society that breeds these losers but it's a cold fact that they exist and are growing in numbers, and when you have them in a country with such a strong and ubiquitous gun culture these tragedies are inevitable and are going to continue and increase unless there is something done to address it.

We are a morally bankrupt nation fixated on immediate self gratification and sexual expression.... We literally live in "the land of plenty" yet few ever seem to pause during their self imposed hectic schedules of meaningless activities to breathe a silent thanks for such. We feel entitled, elitist who constantly want more and more. We have become a "victim society" where in our personal failing are the fault of someone else and never our own. We live in a culture that has taught us through the media that violence, especially gun violence, is the answer to every problem, that violence makes a man a "true man". (How many movies or television shows have a hero who quietly goes about unobtrusively resolving issues and helping others to be the best persons they can be without personally seeking reward or recognition? The hero most often is the most violent who can single handedly take on whole armies, defeat violently undefeatable odds... What message are we giving to impressionable minds that have difficulty discerning image from reality?) Morality has become subjective if we have any lived morality at all. We fail to respect others just as we fail to respect ourselves. If we do not wake up as individuals and as a society / culture, face and address the issues of this day and time we will destroy ourselves and leave a hell on Earth for our children to inherit. Rationalizations and rhetoric, sound bytes and catch phrases will not work any longer. Entrenched positions are a major part of the problems we face. |
