Best movie Format for Amateur site?

I am doing a real amateur site now and will also offer movie clips on it. I am not thinking streaming because the updates hopefully will keep the surfer happy enough to stay even if they can download them all. As I looked over some posts I am still undecided what format to offer.

DIVX 5 is my first choice for now. Easy to encode and small for decend sized movies

wmf I also heard good things about but I am kind of opposed to anything that I need to download from Microsoft.

Mpeg all users can view them but the quality size ratio frankly sucks.

RM I don't like due to the stuff Real tries to always sell

Any thoughts on those or other formats?

I would go with Windows Media Format, the encoder is pretty simple and Free of course.

Bring down the audio bitrate, making it mono 32 to 64 kbps shaves off a bit of file size and leaves room for a higher video bitrate.

Don't go with DIVX, nobody wants to install a program from a link on a porn site, then restart their computer.

Agree. When you're in the mood, you don't want to restart

Depends on the length of the clips. 30 second stroke clips look great with mpeg and work everywhere.

If you have long movies like I have (1 hour) surfers don't want to download 400 clips just to watch 1 movie though, so advertising or not, rm rules. If you check out the new realone player you'll be impressed. Never had a single member with a problem or complaint using it.

Dont even consider wmv, its broke on the latest Media Player 9 without a patch thats hard to find, for authentication.

Divx besides needing a download - when I called them they wanted $5,000 to license the codec for a pay site.

mpeg-1 of course - free, preferred by surfers.

as for file size, look at this one

1.4 MB for a pretty high quality 26 sec video. everything depends on your encoding skills.

this is interesting, I'm thinking of doing all the video editing in house soon.

So how do you get Mpeg-1 down to 3.2 meg a minute.

Any hints would be appreciated.

Tmpgenc, also a download link at digital digest.
You'll never have need for another encoder, you can batch too.

Thats what I am using. The problem is that I can't seem to turn off the sound to get a better compression.

I am currently experimenting with a 1.50 minute DV raw file.

I am now getting it down to 18 mb . I will now reduce framesize and see how it looks.

I also Deinterlaced the file with Virtual dub and I am getting the same frame size.

Not sure if you're talking about frame rate or actual window size, but neither of them have anything to do with the final file size.

Film is 29.97 frames per second, you should never really have a need for any other frame rate, unless you want really choppy video...also, if done incorrectly, the audio won't match up with the video that's playing.

Well I am getting to decent quality and size but still not even close to what I am seeing.

Why is it that reducing the resolution does not reduce size?

Is there a way to include an img with Tmpgenc or do I need another tool like virtual dub to do it?

Virtualdub rules, but I don't think you can add images with it....but I could be wrong.
To watermark & add images, I use premier...it's really easy to do, but other than that I really don't like the program...too much of a resource hog. Just make a bmp in photoshop and import it into premier, then drag it to the timeline. It's better to work with raw AVI when doing this too, but it can get tricky because of the 2 gig filesize limit for AVIs.

nice site jollyperv, those are Adult Legal licensed DVD rips u do yourself?

how long does it take to rip one DVD and how big is the complete movie? When you bring the DVD into your computer is it in MPEG2 format then you render to MPEG-1 or can you do the conversion to MPEG-1 on the fly as it's coming into the computer?

what is a fair price per minute for somebody to rip DVDs? Two people have been on here lately, one i think was 1.50 per minute of video, other was 2.00 but that included encoding into three formats at different bit rates. I found another guy who will do it for .50 cents per minute of video.

Virtual Dub has many filters from people all over the net. I searched the net and found many of them. One does add a img in targa or bmp. I just did it. I was just wondering if I used VD on the raw file before I encode it to mpg the movie might hurt quality wise.

BTW I got 1 min down to 3.5 mb now in good quality. I wonder how far down the bitrate can go ;)
