90-Year-Old Hero Busted Twice in One Week for Feeding Homeless

read the article
Earlier this week, ninety-year-old activist Arnold Abbott was issued a citation for distributing food to the homeless in violation of strict new rules in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He warned that the law wouldn't stop him, and yesterday, he was busted for filling bellies yet again.

"The rule under which Abbot was cited was passed last week, and prohibits distributing food in public without obtaining a permit and providing port-a-potties and hand-washing stations."

Could see if hundreds of people show up but if a small group pretty sure they will lick their fingers clean and take a dump under their normal bridge.

permits like that are easy enough to get, and without money if you talk to the right people. it just wasn't handled right. if any local politician had half a brain they would push it through and use that as an opportunity for a photo op.

that's sad.
BTW I just heard about a new law being drafted in Florida: In 2015, if someone falls and needs your help, you have to ask permission before helping or you may be fined 1000$

No they're not. Not if part of the permit requires you to have plumbing/water and portable toilets. Which brings up the question of increasingly popular food trucks. What do those guys do now and was the regulation passed thru lobbying efforts of fixed location restaurants?

Not to be argumentative but if getting a permit to distribute/sell food that is based on having water/toilets means you have to either own or rent the property where these requirements are located. You can't just park at the curb and have these 2 necessary utilities.

You also can't just park in front of existing facilities that you don't own or rent either.

edit: What the guy should do is file for exemptions based on a non-profit organization with documentation of 501(c)(3) status.

Give this some more thought....

The city most likely has a problem with the homeless population living on the beach. The local residents are pissed because they didn't pay big money to live by the beach so they could live with homeless people and local businesses are pissed because it's scaring away the tourists. Because the local residents are local businesses are upset about the homeless population, the city created a new law to discourage the homeless population.

Feeding the homeless sounds very noble... Right up until the point they are doing on your front lawn. Trust me, when you have ten homeless people on your front lawn eating lunch every day you will call the police and complain too.

Hell has froze over, I agree with Rochard.

Has anyone been to Lauderdale? It is overrun with homeless people. They even have their own newspaper they try and sell by walking up and down the middle of stopped cars at traffic lights. I don't know if it's true and I am too lazy to check but - I was told by a local down there that Lauderdale has one of the highest concentrations of homeless people in the Country.

I'm not saying the guy who is handing out food doesn't mean well, it is very noble. On the other hand I can see why the city is trying to put a kibosh on it.

And there's the truth ladies and gentlemen.

It's all about keeping the homeless out of the area.

Good point.

Food Trucks do not provide client sanitation facilities.

Are they being cited or is this only for those giving food away?

Does this mean a restaurant can not provide samples at other then there fixed location?

Does this mean a food bank or the USDA's snap program is in violation for distributing food with out providing these facilities?
