HELP - How to release a pinched nerve quickly!

I woke up in the middle of the night with pain starting at my mid neck and then shooting down my spine. If I lift my right arm up above my shoulder it becomes unbearable, to the point where I drop to the ground. I had a pinched nerve once when I was 20. I can't remember exactly how long it took for it to heal, I think it was a good week though.

I can deal with working although it sucks shit. My bigger concern is I leave for a camping trip to Voyageurs National Park on Friday morning. This is going to be pretty physical, hauling gear, setting up etc. At this point I can't even imaging trying to get on a damn boat.

Anybody have experience with pinched nerves? Is there anything I can do to speed up my recovery? I really don't want to cancel this trip, I made my reservation 8 months ago and have been looking forward to it all summer.

I can't go to the Doctor today, I dropped my truck off last night to have some work done before the trip and it wont be ready until tomorrow afternoon. If I wait for my wife to get home from work I would have to go to the emergency room. We have plans for my sons Birthday tonight and I don't want to ruin his day.

Horrible timing.... Any help with home remedies would be appreciated.

Call a friend who has muscle relaxers. Seems like your only viable option at this point if you want to manage the pain. Otherwise take 2 tylenol and an alieve

I had a similar problem years ago. Muscle, tendon, and ligaments in my neck, upper back and shoulder area got all locked up, causing one or more of my neck vertebrae to be pulled out of alignment. That in turn gave me all sorts of trouble including pinched never-like symptoms. It hurt so bad it was a twenty minute chore of agony just to get up and get to the bathroom and back. Simply reaching a few inches for the tv remote brought mind-numbing pain.

I got my doctor to write me a prescription for something called NORFLEX. It was a pill that was half muscle relaxant, half anti-inflammatory. Within 8 hours after taking the first one the pain level was down by more than half, and my mobility level was UP by the same. By the 24 hour mark (3 pills) I was about 90% recovered.

I don't think you can get Norflex anymore though. It's no longer available in Canada, but it might still be in the US. Recent inquiries have alerted me that it can still be gotten in Mexico at least. If you can find it or something like it of a similar strength, that's your ticket.

The combination of relaxing those muscles plus taking down the inflamation was the thing that allowed everything to ease back into place. If I ever find a source for Norflex that's willing to ship to Canada I'm going to definitely stock up.

Thank you I see what they have. Score +1 for my Mom. She is heading over now and is going to take me to urgent care.

40 years old and my mom is still saving the day.

I was going to suggest that you get a taxi or Uber to take you to the doctor. Doesn't make sense waiting when it could ruin your whole weekend.

Three cheers for mommy!

Go for a deep tissue therapeutic massage (not the happy ending ones) by a licensed physio therapist.

A lot depends on what's actually pinching the nerve, though. Sometimes a massage can relax the muscles enough to free up the nerve - been there/done that.

If it persists - I'd visit the doc and see about getting an MRI done.

Alignment, massage may help and rest. Advil and stronger muscle relaxants too.

After a serious motorcycle accident I bought an electric stim machine. Pricy yet portable and works real well.

I would not suggest strenuous and activities in remote places until you are 100%. Rescues can be long, painful and embarrassing, though in most national parks the rescue itself is free.

Blade time via bird starts at $5k and I have heard firsthand stories of $20k from some of the more remote parks. I personally carry extra extraction insurance. Most insurance covers no more than 5-8K.

Anal fisting is the best way to clear a trapped nerve, or atleast take your mind off it.

Thx for all the replies. Day 2 of steroids, muscle relaxers and anal fisting have helped quite a bit. I feel about 20% better today. I am still planning on making the trip tomorrow. I will post some pics when I get back.

Thanks!

Sounds like it could be a sleeping position issue (or bad pillow arrangement or a shot mattress). A fan blowing directly on you at night can also cause similar symptoms for some people.

Try sleeping on your sides only. Not even twisted a little in either direction. And keep your neck vertebrae fairly lined up with the rest of your spine (i.e., don't tuck your chin down against your chest).

I have special "neck cut" pillows. They do help. When my neck acts up when camping I bring along those blow up neck pillows for airplanes. I think they help a little too.

1. Ask around for a good massage therapist
2. Call and ask for availability for each therapist
3. Only consider someone who is BOOKED SOLID for the next week or so.
4. Offer them double their normal rate and say it is an emergency.

Muscle relaxers help, if you can get them...but you'll be in a haze for days.

Otherwise, the only and best thing you can do is complete bed rest. Lay still for hours and hours at a time. The muscle will relax on it's own. Do not get a massage, that only irritates the muscle and can make things worse. A heating pad will help, but don't over cook your neck.

It will take at least 2-3 days of pure rest, then at least a full week of not making full movements.

Most of these pinch neck nerves are the result of stress. While you are relaxing review the things at are making you stressed out and come to terms with them or it will happen again.

The body can only take so much stress (mental and physical) and this is your body's way of saying "enough." The mind paralyzes your body to force you to stop doing things that are damaging the body and mind. Your conscience mind is not in control of the inner workings of your body. When your inner mind sends you a message (the pinched nerve) listen to the warning and change what you are doing wrong.

Not medical advice, might be bad for your health. Take ibuprofen 500mg for a day or 2 to reduce inflammation -- not long term.

Make your arm (bend to the shape) like a teacup handle laying near a wall in a hallway. Roll your body weight against your arm to the wall to reset your spine -- Carefully!

You might feel a 'pop' when the vertebrae that may be off its pad reseat.
