How much $ do you need?

We got into a discussion today in the office about our "walk away' numbers. It was pretty funny how low some of the young guys went. They have no homes, no kids etc etc. The numbers they came up with wouldn't cover 1 year of expenses for some of the guys in the conversation, LOL. Obviously the younger you are the more you need.

So whats your walk away number? Cash you'd need, AFTER taxes, to be done. I know Id still work and invest to keep busy, but the amount you'd need to live the lifestyle you would be happy with?

Please don't say 20 Billion...this is the realistic number to live happily and have you be set forever (don't include huge fortunes you want to pass on, just what YOU would need)

Serious answer?

I currently own my home outright, have a reliable car etc, and have about 2 and a half Million invested / in the bank. That's why I walked away back in Sept 2013

I live alone, dont want nor ever have wanted a 'flash' lifestyle... So I'm happy.

(I'm 46, but with the amount I drink, don't expect to live forever)

I have a Son, who has had his 'inheritance' already, in the shape of a House of his choice, and nearly new car, and a lavish wedding taking place next month...

If anything is left over, it will goto my Grandson

Forget investing the money to make more etc etc, just the amount you would need to live the rest of your life and never have to worry about $ again. But a REALISTIC number, anyone can say a billion dollars. The bare minimum you'd need to be happy from a financial standpoint.

Sound more like a "retirement income" then walkaway money.I would be satisfied with 2000$ monthly,as i dont have big needs, dont give a damn about luxuries.Tho,i would also want to experience some cities in world for a month or two,and for that might be needed more then 2000$ to cover basic living costs.

Lame. It's not what I want. But to answer you question, I would say billion trillion trillion trillions EUR. I would attack (like Soros) USD, EUR, RUB and CNY, make a huge mess, make enormous amounts of money and then living that proposed lame life remembering my financial battle.

If we're not talking about investing any of it in and collecting the interest off it as income, just a chunk of cash needed to be the only source of money for the rest of my life, I'd probably say 20 mil. At my age, that's a little less than a mil a year to live on until I die.

Edit://

I say a little less than a mil a year because I call being able to buy whatever I want, whenever I want without worrying about if I can afford it. so if I want to go and buy a $100k car for some reason, I don't want to go "well I only gave myself $150k/yr to live on."

Walk away from working?

My day job - $5mil.

But I would still continue doing photography (and deriving income from it) - since I don't think of it as work.

The $5mil would just allow me to travel more to expand my photography locations.

Ok so since 1000Eur is ok to live a month, 12k a year, lets say 50 years, 600K eur.
Now the value of money will go down, but lets assume we have them invested to cover the inflation.
Double that - and live like a king. So lets be generous and 1 million euros would be enough.

Having said that - I would never walk away from working for that much, not even for ten or twenty times that much. Just said how much would be enough to live off.

I would say somewhere between $1 million and $2 million. Buy a decent house, a few cars, and then live off the of the rest. I am forty-five years old.

I thought you walked away from adult long before then?

Walk away money for me would be 3 to 5 million minimum - 10 would be great. I'd more than likely just invest and live off dividends.

$2 million could do it, modestly (I'm 46). $5 million happens to be my target; I'm not too modest - but I don't need a plane.

I figure a good rule of thumb is to take what you need now and double it (inflation, COL increases etc) then figure how long you expect to live. I'm in my mid 30s. I'd say I could live on $2000 a month if I needed to. I expect to live about 40 more years. So

$2000 * 2 * 12 months * 40 years = $1,920,000
Round it up to $2 million for a little buffer just in case.

Fuck that. I love innovating and solving problems. There's no price that'd make me lose the desire to be in the game. I'm only 35; I've got a lot of passion left.

I'd walk away for mid 6-figures and then just steal other people's ideas and take it to a large program owner and get them to support me with a new affiliate program. I mean it's worked for other people so I may as well try it.
