Google Glass wearers can steal your password
Remember the kid who tried to cheat off you by looking over your shoulder to copy your test answers? He's baaaack.
But this time he's wearing Google Glass -- and he's after your iPad PIN. Cyber forensics experts at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell have developed a way to steal passwords entered on a smartphone or tablet using video from Google's face-mounted gadget and other video-capturing devices. The thief can be nearly ten feet away and doesn't even need to be able to read the screen -- meaning glare is not an antidote. The security researchers created software that maps the shadows from fingertips typing on a tablet or smartphone. Their algorithm then converts those touch points into the actual keys they were touching, enabling the researchers to crack the passcode. They tested the algorithm on passwords entered on an Apple (AAPL, Tech30) iPad, Google's (GOOGL, Tech30) Nexus 7 tablet, and an iPhone 5. The software can be applied to video taken on a variety of devices: Fu and his team experimented with Google Glass, cell phone video, a webcam and a camcorder. The software worked on camcorder video taken at a distance of over 140 feet. Of course, pointing a camcorder in a stranger's face might yield some suspicion. The rise of wearable technology is what makes this approach actually viable. For example, a smartwatch could stealthily record a target typing on his phone at a coffee shop without drawing much attention. http://money.cnn.com/2014/07/07/tech...ack/index.html http://money.cnn.com/video/technolog...nnmoney?iid=EL |

WOW! TEN WHOLE FEET! I promise if you were 10 feet away from me and entered a PIN I could tell you what it was with no need for Glass or 'special' software. And it's just for a PIN, not a password. WOWZER! |

You can actually hear sounds made in a room from the vibrations on the window glass. Look for defenses next. I remember in the 90s there were lots of stories in NYC about people who used binoculars to get pins, etc. I'm guessing fairly soon you'll see an additional layer of security added to those transactions.

He's not being a dick, it's terrible news reporting. The article is saying "People with video cameras can record you typing in your pin and the then later watch the video to figure out your pin". No shit... The story has nothing to do with google glass, they just threw that in there as the medium for video recording to make a very old and non-news-worthy story have traction. It's the same story from back in the early 2000's when people were freaking out that others could record them putting in their pin at an atm.

Secure Messaging App Wickr Raises $30 Million Series B
Self-destructing and encrypted messaging app Wickr raised $30 million in Series B funding, the company is announcing today, in a round led by Jim Breyer, founder and CEO of Breyer Capital, with participation from CME Group and Wargaming. Breyer will now join the company?s board. The new round comes on the heels of Wickr?s $9 million Series A announced earlier this year. The app was created by CEO Nico Sell, also longtime organizer of the DEF CON security conference, as a tool that allows senders and receivers to communicate privately. Only the receiver is able to decrypt the message after it?s sent, as the company itself does not hold the decryption keys. Security and privacy are popular topics in this post-Snowden era, where a backlash against mainstream social services is finding new footing with those of a younger generation, as well as those wanting to protect themselves from overzealous ad-targeting or even in some cases, totalitarian government regimes. Wickr also resells its technology to other messaging apps that want to include a more private and secure component to their service. Meanwhile, the company?s new strategic investors Wargaming and CME Group see Wickr?s potential in their own industries, gaming and financial services, respectively. |

How to Get Rid of a Stalker Always state romantic or social rejections clearly. Responding with comments such as, "I'm not interested in a relationship/being friends with you at this time," or "I'm dating someone else," can lead a person to believe that you would date or be friends with them, if the timing were right or if they keep pressing the issue. Warn the offender clearly. Tell the stalker in as few words as possible that they are not welcome to contact you. "Do not contact me again." Do not engage in lengthy dialogue with the suspected stalker. Never respond to any of the suspected stalker's contacts again. Your goal is to inform the stalker that their actions are harassment and warn them never to make contact with you from that point on. What you say must be credible. There may be a chance that the offender may cease and desist. Later record how and when you gave the warning along with any future incidents. Ignore and do not respond to further attempted interactions. Your stalker may try to deliberately rile you by making provocative comments if he or she gets close enough to you or uses messages to do so. Any response, even a negative one only feeds into the stalker's belief that he/she is getting to you. Be strong and keep walking or refuse to press that recall button. Do not press reply. Just ignore the comments - otherwise, you are adding fuel to the fire. If the stalker is an ex, it may help to read How to end a controlling or manipulative relationship. Never attempt to reason with or appease a stalker. This only reinforces his/her belief that his or her tactics are working. |
