One of my dreams has been to buy a conversion van and cruise around the US and just work from the road.

yep - here too by now

the good ones start at $12-15K up to $30k

and originality pays extra, putting Subaru or newer Audi/VW engines in is considered blasphemy

And the original Micro Bus - especially the Samba with roof windows - is easily $100k and more

I always wanted an A-Team van. Thankfully I never got around to building one. It's on my to do list, right after I build my KITT replica and my Smokey and the bandit TA.

If we came to a roadblock, we just all ducked down heh.

He would take his many kids, plus my grandmother, neighbors, etc and pile us into the van and go for drive out long winding deep-woods country roads to go fishing, drinking, camping, fiddlehead picking or just an excuse to drink in the woods they all grew up in. Not the smartest idea, though, they grew up on these roads long before cars were around those parts.

lot of fun times and could haul a shit-ton of people and stuff.

I believe you're referring to what we call a "Rapist Van. " Those are easy to find at auction and you can make the interior whatever you like.

Sprinter conversion vans are the coolest and not rapey, but very pricey.

Far as mini vans we again just have the big three and I think all the japanese manufactures stopping selling mini vans in favor of SUV's but I maybe wrong. The only Euro type van we have here in the states is the VW and even with that we don't get all the options. They can't import any of the diesel options and we don't get the Westy's anymore.

Our lovely govt has done quite a good job at keeping out all the fuel efficient vans and trucks that you guys enjoy. Not a single manufacturer can import diesels either.. Mercedes does it somehow but they are the only ones.

We don't get those awesome Toyota diesel trucks nor do we get any van options in diesel except ones offered by Ford & Chevy. Not even Dodge offers one. Basically the big three and their lobbyist have crushed any real competition here in the US.

This wasn't always true as you can find older Nissan, Toyota & Isuzu trucks that had diesels but they are few and very far between. The very first 2 years of the Vanagon as well had diesels but after that they weren't imported. That was 80 & 81 I think. The older Nissian & Toyotas are about that same age..

Reagan became president and then it was FREEDOM from oppressive import cars that might harm US manufacturer's sales..

crockett, i was under the impression those high mileage diesels are not imported into the USA is due to lackluster sales, not government. they've never been marketed to the US properly I think is why the low sales.

No Japan was actually importing a lot of diesels back in the 80's and the cheap imported cars were killing the big three. Reagan essentially bailed the big three out by placing tariffs on imported Japanese cars driving up their prices and limiting what models they could import and sell at a profit.

At that time VW & Mercedes were the only European cars being imported so there wasn't a lot of competition from Europe but a ton from Japan. I'm not 100% sure how this affected them, but at that point VW stopped importing diesels. It was after Reagan introduced the tariffs that you stopped seeing diesels imported.

I don't know if there was anything specific with diesels in regard to the tariff or if it these companies had to limit the models in order to make a profit. I'm pretty sure it was only Mercedes whom imported diesels after that and I assume it was because they were a higher priced luxury car.

Added to this diesel is taxed at a higher rate than gasoline even though it costs less to produce.

This blame also lays square at the feet of Ronald Reagan.. He brought us the STAA Act which was a tax on big trucks and at the time created a extra 5 cent per gallon tax on diesel fuel in order to pay for road repairs.

Essentially the govt killed the diesel market in the US before it was ever able to get roots. This is why diesel costs over $4/gal on average vs $3.50ish for gasoline because that lovely tax Reagan introduced has stayed put and increased.
