"shocked and deeply saddened" is becoming pretty cliche.

Might as well get a fucking rubber stamp with those words to save themselves the time.

You had a pro wrestler as a childhood hero?!?

I only knew him from this gif:

Seemed relatively young still, and good things were happening for him. What was the cause of death?

One of the most shocking things I've ever heard.

He just made peace with Vince McMahon, returned to the WWE, was inducted to The Hall Of Fame on Saturday night, appeared at Wrestlemania in the New Orleans Superdome on Sunday night, and then did an in-ring promo live on Monday night Raw last night.

A fan had a pic with him this morning at the airport in New Orleans as he was flying back to his home state of Arizona.

TMZ said he collapsed walking to his car from a hotel in AZ with his wife. Was pronounced dead at the hospital.

My uneducated guess is: Heart attack.

He really, really abused steroids in the 1980's and 1990's. Doing mega amounts to keep his body that jacked all those years. And when you do that much...it leads to an enlarged heart.

At least the guy got a chance to make peace with the business, get into the Hall Of Fame, and see the fans one more time.

At the Hall Of Fame ceremony they have all the inductees escorted to the podium by WWE "Divas".
Ultimate Warrior did not do that. He had his 2 little girls walk him out to the podium.

Just goes to show...you never know when your time is up. One minute you are here, the next...just gone.

He did not look well on Monday night. He had trouble walking and seemed weak. The cameras also cut away each time he tried to shake the ropes.

54 years old. He should have still been able to run to the ring and do his familiar act.

It is sad to see him go. Obviously, he knew he was near the end.

I remember watching him and Randy "Macho Man" Savage (also deceased for steroids-related issues) have some classic matches.

I first saw him when he was wrestling in Fritz Von Erich's Texas wrestling federation. He was quite a show and you could tell he was heading for the top.

He lived quite a life and has left a ton of great memories with people. Can anyone really ask for more?

That, with his girls, was really great.
You could see his emotion for them and his wife.
When I saw this thread earlier, I hadn't heard...and saw news on wwe site & abcnews etc...
I am floored, really.

He seemed a tad off at Raw on Monday night. But looked good in the pic with a fan at the airport this morning. Sad. RIP!

Just WOW!

As said by others he seemed a bit off, he also seemed to have a few moments of extreme emotion on Monday Night.

Such a shame he only got to enjoy a brief moment after his reconciliation with the wrestling business. I wonder what Steve Borden (Sting the wrestler), they broke into wrestling as a team, will say about his passing.

From his speech on WWE Monday Night Raw:

Quote:
"Every mans heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe its final breath. And if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the bodies of others; If it makes them believe deeper in something larger than life; than his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized." - James Hellwig / Ultimate Warrior
seems pretty ominous to me today, and when I watched it live Monday night I had a similar thought (He's not coming back, this was a one time thing (over 3 nights)

I'm a closet Wrestling fan due to my childhood in Madison Heights, George The Animal Steel was the football coach at the high school, and often the (WWF) WWE stars would come to home games when they were in town, it was not odd to see people like Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Warrior, Junk Yard Dog, Ko Ko Beware, Mr Fugi etc etc near the highschool or around town, and they used to run "contests" for the younger kids (elementary and junior high) where good marks got you free tickets to local events, I got to go to a few, as well as meet most of the "stars" back then.

Many were great guys (and women) and many of us knew them as Terri, Jim, Frank, Bob, etc and not just by their stage names.

Nice quote.

I wonder why he couldn't get a heart transplant, they're not rare these days.

What a price WWE performers have paid.

Yeah he was my fave WWF wrestler also. Loved it when he charged to the ring at Wrestlmania 8 to save Hogan, haha.

Most of the wrestlers from those days seem to be gone now.

Suppose it was quite fitting he made his short comeback at Wrestlemania last weekend...

RIP Warrior

You wouldn't list 2 minutes in the ring with any of them. None of us would.

Yea, they know the outcome of the match, and yea, the soften some of the blows, and yea, they even know some of the moves the other guy will do, but those dudes take a serious beating every single day, and those ropes and the mat are not soft by any means.

I've been backstage at a few WWF events (before they were WWE) and saw the pain they were in when they came back from the ring. They seriously abuse their bodies, and often take some really hard blows by accident.

Nothing fake or gay about taking a real beating by guys that big and strong.

I think he was far too young to just drop like that for sure, but that's a pretty cool thing to happen just before though. Would have been far worse if it happened before all that I'd say. He had a very negative standing with wrestlers and management for years before that.

I met Hulk Hogan, I thought I was big.

In his first match, he broke an arm or a leg I think.

It may be fake, but it's not all that safe.

It's entertainment, I heard the grave digger just got hurt too!

not my point - fact is it's a live soap opera, where grown men are cheering for their favorite buff shaved actor. These guys probably go to musicals too and cheer when their favorite actor bursts out singing

It's a crowd cheering on modern gladiators who are there for their entertainment. It's been going on since humans began fighting each other, and it still goes on today in one form or another with wrestling, ultimate fighting, boxing, football, rugby, hockey, and so on. Soap opera or not, people LOVE to watch strong men try to hurt each other. Always have, always will. Violent entertainment will always be popular.

However, I will agree that their acting, if you want to call it that, is cheesy and over the top. They could lose that and just get down to throwing each other around. Though, women love their soaps, so maybe some men love theirs too.

I don't know about Hogan. He was never jacked up quite like Ultimate Warrior was back in the day.

Hogan obviously took a lot of steroids...but not at the insane levels that professional bodybuilders do.
Ultimate Warrior was so jacked he had to be doing levels at or near pro bodybuilder levels.

Was just watching a few videos from his speech and I agree, he looked like he was struggling.

Steroid abuse has taken a horrible toll on the health and lives of pro wrestlers. What I find most sad and troubling is that the wrestling industry's target audience appears to be kids and uneducated people who want to emulate their heroes whom they consider athletes, when many of these wrestle-tainers owe a good deal of their body/muscles and supposed athleticism to steroid abuse.

I don't follow pro wrestling, however I've heard that over 100 pro wrestlers have passed away before 50 due to heart attacks and other ailments related to steroid abuse.

Quote:
Over one-quarter of the performers who took part in 1991's Wrestlemania VII have died, a wrestling website noted in the wake of the death of "Macho Man" Randy Savage.

The Wrestling Observer newsletter discovered that 14 of the 51 performers at the event have died in the past 20 years, with many of the deaths attributed to drug use

Quote:
109 wrestlers die in a decade

This article was originally published on July 5 2007, with a figure of 104 wrestlers passing away before the age of 50 in 10 years. It has since been updated with new deaths and the shocking total now stands at 109.

ADG you're just reading sensationalized stuff.

What has taken a "toll" on pro wrestlers is the same thing that has happened to so many other people: Prescription pills.

THAT is the real disaster that is happening to millions of people and especially pro athletes.

They get hooked on pain pills, then sleeping pills, and then anti-depressants.

It's not as "sexy" as dying from steroid abuse...but it is the biggest problem out there. Both in the sports world and amongst "normal" people.

The Warrior was jacked beyond belief back in the 1980's and early 1990's. He was taking pro bodybuilder amounts of steroids.
Problem is...pro bodybuilders cycle off for most of the year and only get crazy as they prepare for the big shows.

Pro wrestlers on the other hand are year round. He never cycled off. So the damage that was probably done to his heart was probably what killed him.

Very doubtful that any kid watching wrestling would ever be able to even find (much less buy) the quality and quantity of steroids that Warrior did for all those years.
The WWE also has a "wellness program" that they test the wrestlers now and suspend them if they find anything in their blood.

That seems to only apply to certain wrestlers though. Vince McMahon himself is in his late 60's and is still obviously taking a lot of steroids...though he SHOULD at least be taking testosterone.

Also your comment about "supposed athleticism" is spoken like a true non-athlete.

You could start shooting steroids at the level of the Ultimate Warrior in the 1980's right now...and you STILL would look exactly like you do now.
The steroids are only part of the equation.

Or as a doctor once told me: "What you put in your mouth to eat is more important than all the steroids combined".

Now if you got on the right disciplined diet, hit the gym like a beast (I'm talking beyond anything you can even picture in your head), AND increase your levels of testosterone via steroids to allow your muscles to reach optimum growth?
THEN you could get ripped and jacked.

Trust me...the Ultimate Warrior didn't just take steroids and kick back on the sofa. He worked harder in the gym than anyone you or I know to achieve that kind of physique.

If it were as easy as just shooting steroids...then everyone would have had those kind of bodies.

It's possible that he never stopped doing steroids. He wrestled only a couple times in the past 15 years or so, yet he kept his body strong.....

My buddy sent me a text yesterday asking how Warrior died and I thought it was the start of another one of his bad puns at first.

I can't believe he just dropped dead days after the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony. Hell, he was just on TV on Monday.

At least he got his redemption. He tore that shitty "Self Destruction Of The Ultimate Warrior" apart on a public stage, re-established his good name and got the adulation from fans I'm sure he had missed every day.
