Have to agree, never understood why The Cult never got a bigger following. Another 90's band that I thought would have been bigger was Faith No More, I'm reminded of them every time I watch Dirty Jobs on the Discovery channel.

I remember when they hit big with Epic, and the critics were blasting them for being a homogenized version of The Chili Peppers.

I thought that song was awesome, and we played it our band...but whoever produced it was definitely going for a more "polished" Chili Peppers sound and I think that after the initial success of the song it kind of backfired on them.

Another band I just thought of that hit kind of big and then faded to nothing: Ugly Kid Joe
Seemed like you couldn't go anywhere without hearing their song "Hate Everything About You" for a few months.
Then..."poof"...gone.

When I was young I used to think it was great that bands were so fucked up onstage. And at that time (the 1970's) it was kind of a cultural badge of honor.

But now, I have to wonder WHY they couldn't just play onstage sober for a couple of hours?

I mean WTF?

Why did bands have to be totally fucking wasted by 9 p.m. and play like shit?

It seems like the logical thing would be to go out and kick ass on stage. You're done by 11 p.m., THEN grab all the groupie whores backstage and get fucking wasted off your ass in a big drug and sex orgy.

Just seems dumb, now that I'm older, that bands did that.
Hell, I'm guilty of it too when I toured in my cover bands.

We played 7 nights a week. And usually played 4 to 5 sets a night. By the third set (around midnight/ 1 a.m.) we would be pretty fucked up.

Of course you can play at a certain level of proficiency even if you can barely count to "4". But you play 100 times better when your sober and instead of struggling to barely make it through a song....you are stretching out and pushing your limits.

Were there hard rock bands in the 90's then?
Either way, the answer to the question in the thread is ALL of them should have been bigger. Might have stemmed the tide of grown in the laboratory "idol" pop for a while longer.
I still listen to a couple of songs by Icon.

Most of the bands listed in this thread couldn't lick Pearl Jam's nutsack.

The Last Great Band: Pearl Jam.

(I like Counting Crows too but they've been mailing it in for a few years now so fuck 'em - a COVERS album? C'mon now....).

I don't wanna leave out my buddies SOUTHGANG...they had a couple of albums, when I was in my second stint in the music biz...then since that time, Butch Walker has done a couple of other bands, and produced a TON of other well known acts...too long to mention.
He's helluva guitarist and writer!

Photo is one I took of his subsequent bands with three members of SOUTHGANG, for a promo shoot, in Atlanta's Cotton Club.

The number of times I hear them listed as an influence to newer bands suggests they at least got through to some in their target market. It is interesting how a band can be at superstar level within their own genre but to the general public just be the band with the dying fish in their video.

We Care A Lot is fun to listen to now for all the references. A bit like We Didn't Start The Fire for 80's kids.

I don't think I'm allowed to do any posting here, I was 2 by the end of the 80s. Though this Savatage stuff is pretty face-meltingly good.

My first ever concert. L.A. Guns, Lynch Mob, Dokken, Slaughter, Alice in Chains (they were unknown and there were maybe 50 people in the whole arena), and Ozzy.

Cool lineup!

We were playing at Club LaVela in Panama City, Florida around 1990/1991 and opened a show for L.A. Guns there.

It was funny as hell. They had laid out in the sun all day at the beach (it was Spring Break), and the drummer was as red as a stop sign.

And when you play drums that ain't a good thing. His skin was tight and painful.

Funny thing was, he walked out onstage wearing shorts with no shirt. But once he got behind his kit to play, he stripped down totally naked! lol
We could see that from backstage, but the people out front couldn't.

L.A. Guns is easily a top 5'er for me... I see them play every time they roll into Phoenix. Love the new album

I don't think more than a handful of people watching actually knew who he was, but George Lynch played a very intimate free open air concert on the roof of the building at the last XBiz show in Miami last year with three other musicians that featured a long set full of Dokken hits, Lynch Mob and his solo songs and a couple of cover tunes. He even invited someone from the crowd up to sing a rocked out version of one of James Brown's hits. He was the best musical guest ever at a webmaster show.

Bay Area band Y&T never quite made it to the big big time...

Their sound is similar to Van Hagar - I saw Y&T play bars a lot in their early days, and then open for a dozen of the biggest rock bands back in the day.

Y&T is still active and touring.

Y&T yeah, they were pretty big or at least Mean Streak was and seemed to play all the time and every local band covered it. Summertime Girls I think was more of a fail for a hard rock image. Those times were a mishmash of glam and whatever and see if it sticks. Was never into the big hair and makeup, but I did like some of the guitar rock.

Wow, lots of great bands posted in here that I totally agree with. I'll post my pick, Leatherwolf, I LOVE this band and their "Street Ready" album is one of my favorite albums from the 80s.

They even released a new album back in 2009 and they're still bad ass, here's proof
