World War 1

Is it just me, or is this a somewhat forgotten war? Almost everything on the history channel and other war documentaries is about WWII.. very rarely do you see anything about the 1st world war.

And it dawned on me.. July 28th this year marks the 100yr anniversary of the start. I would expect to see tons of documentaries this year. Though I really haven't seen anything about it.

Also, found this video on youtube. Apparently someone restored this film footage. Pretty cool to see if you ask me..

There are people entering ballots to be able to go to Gallipoli for the 100th anniversary, I'd say it's far from forgotten.

You're welcome. I think it's amazing that someone was able to do such a good job on the footage. Almost looks like it's from a movie in some parts, but apparently it's not.

This ten-part documentary series on World War 1 from 2003 called "The First World War" is one of the best. I saw it on the History Channel several years ago.

My grandfather was in that war. He fought at Vimy Ridge. No way it's forgotten here. One of, if not the, bloodiest most brutal war in human history, that. Trench warfare. Gas and chemical weapons. Bayonettes. Biplanes. Blimps. This one had it all.

It may be getting percieved as 'forgotten' now because there are no more veterans of that war alive. Well, that and the fact that WWII happened in a time 20 years later when the movie industry was more advanced and thus a ton more movies got made about that war than the 1st one. After the last WWII vets die off that's really all our kids will have is movies, documentaries, what if anything they're taught about it in school, and what we can pass on to them.

When it comes to World Wars, people are like: "What have you done for me lately?"

You watch...when WWIII happens, number 2 will be kicked to the curb alongside number 1

that's going a bit overboard there... Think about how many there have been in recorded history alone. These things become less talked about when people don't grow up with family members who were actually in these wars. Just like anything else they get lost throughout the ages.

Interesting. I'd like to find out more about this footage. I've heard that very little real combat footage exists. Most were re-enacted after the fact when they had time to move cameras into position, and toward the end of the war when cameras had got a bit better.

All wars are bad, but WWI had to be the most insanely brutal war ever fought for absolutely no reason, only mis-communication and the bruised egos of some in-bred nobility, and with no benefit to the winners. Most hideously sad war of all time, IMHO.

Perhaps the americans will only start remembering it in 2017 as they didn't join in till 1917 as they preferred to stay neutral up until that point when submarine attacks started again etc.

That footage is obviously staged.

Moreover were it not for that pointless war, Hitler and Stalin would have lived out their lives respectively as a mediocre painter of postcards and as a bank robber.

And in all likelihood another 60 million plus people wouldn't perish prematurely roughly 25 years later.

WWI had a bigger impact on subsequent western history than any other event since the fall of Rome.
