Think russia will acctually invade?

My girlfriend is russian, when she gets pissed off, it's bad.

People joke, but Russians always seem angry and depressed, not the types to shake their fist at you and inform you of your mothers weight issues.

Good for Putin. Hope he does. With so many weak and ineffectual leaders in the USA and EU, he's playing his cards very well and has been for some time. What does he have to worry about from the West? Consequences? Not likely. What anyone outside of Russia/Ukraine doesn't understand is that Russia has been bemoaning the loss of Sevastopol since they broke up, which was very very important to Russia strategically and a tremendous amount of natural gas comes from Ukraine... where prices and paying market prices has been an issue between Russia and Ukraine since the early 90s. The Ukraine has been moving towards NATO for over 20 years. Add to that, Ukraine trying to move to the EU, the possibility of allowing NATO to establish forces, bases, missile sites at Russias front door and Russia has very little choice but to act in their interests.

One lesson pussies will never learn or accept, including Obama is that failing to project strength, is projecting weakness. Project weakness, and there are plenty of nations and regimes in the world that will quickly seize the opportunities as they come up. Remember when Putin was kissing President Bush's ass? Remember him walking around the ranch with a cowboy hat on? He's been testing Obama for a while now and its quite clear that Obama is 100% pure pussy and incapable of dealing with the issues in any capacity... and has demonstrated he's not willing to.

Putin isn't a bad person... he's just a more effective leader in every sense of the word.

It's getting interesting with these regional proxy wars. How do you see this playing out?

Russia are definitely starting to flex their influence, they've prevented/delayed Syria from another Western backed regime change by supporting the Syrian Government.

It's impossible to say how it will play out. They took back Chechnya... which was largely about oil. I don't think Russia is trying to "flex".. .they have a more or less legit opportunity to jump in and get a foothold in the Ukraine again. Since Ukraine split, there has been a constant issue of natural gas supplies to Russia and prices, the loss of their black sea naval base and the threat for the last 15 years at least of the Ukraine joining NATO and NATO also putting missile defense systems there. All Russia really has to do is to start driving wedges into this place and it will make it much much harder for the west to influence the Ukraine and an impossibility to join the EU.

All of this is less about long term strategic planning than it is about simply taking advantage of opportunities as they present themselves. Every win for Putin is a loss for the West. He has been fucking with Obama for a while ... he know's nothing is going to happen from the West and the opportunities are there to exert influence in the Ukraine and divide them over the west. It's win/win for Russia, no matter what happens.

And what do you suggest a strong leader of the United States would/should do in this situation?

A strong and effective leader would rally other strong leaders and eventually, the entire continent of Europe to draw a firm line in the sand and create and agree to costs which will be much much higher than Russia's gains. Putin knows there is literally zero chance of this happening.

People can hate Bush all they want... but one eternal truth is that power respects power. And that respect is often all that stands between friendship and cooperation and complete disaster.

Sure, put an economic embargo on Russia, isolate them - in 1940 that worked out well, in turn the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the war was on and ended with Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It's inevitable that we blow ourselves up to kingdom come eventually, just a matter of time.

Europe has been a festering mess since forever, carrying around centuries old grudges just waiting to start up again at any moment.

Patton at the end of WWII wanted to finish the Russians off. It was a brief time we held the upper hand with the the threat of nukes while they had no answer.

Russia produces ressources, this embargo won't work with China, it could split the world in 2 blocks again. The result of this could be an increase of the price of the primary ressources

Its quite simple... either they can be on the outside, or they can be on the inside. This means business in Dollars and Euros, this means selling oil, timber, minerals. This means trade with the EU and North America. A country can survive on its own... but it can't grow and thrive without trade. Over time, they weaken.

There are no perfect answers. But thats my point. Right now, there is no answer. Not even a bad answer.

.... and Japan only rose in power because pussies allowed them to rebuild their military and build it up. They were violating their agreements and doing it in full view of the world and they had an incredibly brutal history of lashing out at those around them. Their designs were always clear... but ignored. That was the problem. Not embargo's. They could have been stopped at any time by simply enforcing the agreements of the time. Leaders bring other leaders together and they act. Obama is not that guy. He's the opposite. He's the weak pussy that attracts violence because there is no fear of consequences... of any consequences.

i was being facetious.

there's no doubt Bush was a more intimidating adversary for Putin than Obama but a conventional war with the US and Russia involved fighting each other just isn't going to happen in Ukraine or anywhere else, so not sure what Bush would do that would scare Putin off, go finish off Syria?

i'm not sure that a war between russia and ukraine is going to happen.
I think that russia will control crimea, it's better and for russia and for ukraine and they know it.
You don't need to wait that putin is off to act in syria, but imo we are already (i'm french) in a war that don't want to give its name.

Putin?s guarded and mistrustful attitude to the United States is common knowledge, and he makes no attempt to conceal it. The reasons for it lie not in his record during the Cold War, as many often claim, but in his experience in dealing with the George W. Bush administration during its first and, particularly, second term.

Bush did abuse early Russian cooperation (as he abused relationships with many other cooperative and allied states), and then spent the rest of his time in office seeming to go out of his way to pursue policies that were certain to wreck bilateral relations.
