So far, SuperBowl week has been a financial bust in NYC

Absolutely no uptick in business for Superbowl week, which kicked off Monday. Hotel rooms are empty and now available at discounts. The secondary ticket market is plumetting. Where are the 400,000 people and $500 million that this thing supposedly generates? As an example, there are two fashion weeks in NYC and business is booming in those weeks. People all over town partying and doing deals.

A lot of people thought they were going to make bank this week and instead are crying in their beers.

I don't know. Fashion Week starts Feb 6 and you can be sure everyone will be here regardless of the weather. And a much better looking crowd than the NFLers.

Exactly. Who thought it was a good idea to have the super bowl in cold weather?

Why not Florida, Az or some place like that.

Why sit out in the cold in over priced nose bleed seats, when you can watch from the comfy of your home on a big screen

You really don't see what differences there might be between Fashion Week and the Super Bowl and how each are being impacted differently?

Super bowl is turning into the toilet bowl...seems like fewer people have money to just flush down the drain these days as the gap between the "haves' and the "have nots" grows wider with each passing year here in America!

I was hoping for an ice and snow bowl, but unfortunately it's going to be somewhat mild by game time.

Football was not meant for domes and fair weather. What made it tough was playing the game in the elements while other sports put up their hello kitty umbrellas and "called off" the game for fear of becoming men.

Yes its always this time of year, but its almost always played in an indoor stadium. This year they decided to try and have it outside in NY in early Feb.

Bingo... ^^^ this, exactly ^^^. It used to be that people would relish going to the game in snow and mud.

The proliferation of domes since the 1980s, and the amazing TV coverage have made people lazy now.

regular season games and playoffs should be played in the stadium of the hosting team, regardless of covered or not.

The superbowl should not.

The weather simply should not be a factor in who wins the Lombardi trophy.

In fact, after a bit of googling, this is the very 1st cold weather region, open-domed super bowl ever.

It could be the last cold play for a long time, as the league made this a onetime exemption to its 50-degree rule.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but this is my perspective. I own an NYC yellow taxi and drive 3 days a week. When it's fashion week, I know that the airports will be busy on the first 2 days and the last 2 days of the 10 day event. The hotels raise their rates and are full - at $700 a night plus at the major hotels. And I'm busy all day and all night bringing people to the shows at Lincoln Center and then smaller shows at various venues throughout the city and then all of the label parties throughout the evening until about 2-3am. And this starts with Day 1.

So far for the Superbowl this week: nothing. They had a welcome party downtown on Monday and said they needed taxis for 3,000 people. There weren't 200 there. Last night they said they were expecting 5,000 at Pier 60, a big event space. There were more people bowling at the lanes next door.

I'm saying after all the hype that it brings in 400,000 people and generates half a billion in revenue for the host city has not panned out so far. Certainly not worth putting a dome on a stadium to get on the Superbowl host circuit like they've been talking about in the NY media.

weather.com says New York City is around 23° right now. Are the fashion show events outside? I'm in Texas right now and I don't think I would go sit outside even here for six hours.

I lived in San Diego when the Super Bowl was there. It was totally insane. The weather is taking its toll on the turnout.

This pleases me very much. I hate that the NJ giants & jets are called the ny giants etc. fuck New York. Maybe goodell will realize that it's time to rename the teams. People are lodging in nj and probably west as the PA border for cheap. Who would want to stay in New York for a 1000 a night. NYC is not even a football town. I thought it was until I went to real football towns.
I'm sure the weather isn't helping, but when you look at your itinerary & everything is in nj, fuck ny.

Its on Sunday, why would you expect people to come in 5 days earlier? Majority probably would start coming on the weekend. Plus its in NJ, not NY.

Just a few thoughts.

1. This isn't a marquee match up. I am a big Seahawk fan and I love that they are in the game, but the Seahawks are kind of the red headed step child of the NFL.

2. It is all about the weather. When you go to the Super Bowl many people go for at least a few days leading up to the game and check out the events. Not many people are going to want to party outside and watch concerts, celebrity flag football games or to to NFL exhibits when it is 10 degrees outsides. Add in that they tell you to get to the game about 2 hours in advance because of security and the long half time and pre-game stuff and you could end up being at the stadium for a good 5-7 hours. Again, being outside in that kind of cold for that time would be miserable for most people.

3. It is getting more and more expensive. I read yesterday that the average ticket prices are actually down 28% this year, but the cheapest seats in the place still cost $1,500 and decent seats are north of $3K. Add in the hotel costs, food, transportation and everything else that is likely jacked up because of the Super Bowl and it is a pretty major expense.

Do you own the license for it, or lease it ?

Some are in heated tents and most are inside venues. The Superbowl Boulevard set up on Broadway, open since Monday has a lot of stuff inside heated tents - except for the extra point try (with regulation goal posts and the toboggan run.

It's just that they kept promoting it as a full week of events - like Media Day on Tuesday, etc. I think the majority of people going to the game will get here on Friday and make it a 3-day weekend.

I thought it was until I went to real football towns.
I'm sure the weather isn't helping, but when you look at your itinerary & everything is in nj, fuck ny.

I think you're right - the corporate high rollers will stay in NYC, but the rest are staying on the Jersey side. Hell, both teams are staying in Jersey City. And being a 4th generation Jersey Cityan, nothing pisses me off more than having teams playing here, enjoying tax relief and not recognizing the proper zip code.

HUGE factor. If New England or Baltimore were in it, it would be huge. If the Jets (yeah, right) or Giants were in it, it would be historic.

2. It is all about the weather. When you go to the Super Bowl many people go for at least a few days leading up to the game and check out the events.
Roger Goodell said the theme of this year's Super Bowl is "Embrace the Cold". Huge miscalculation on his part.

3. Add in the hotel costs, food, transportation and everything else that is likely jacked up because of the Super Bowl and it is a pretty major expense.
And that would be strike three. Some hotels blacked out this week, holding on to empty rooms figuring demand would be high and they could get a real premium. Now they're sitting on empty rooms, trying to dump them at discounted prices.

I kept hearing: 400,000 people are going to descend upon NYC - they said it would be like dropping Miami in the middle of Manhattan. To say they grossly overestimated attendance would be an understatement.

I bought my medallion in June 2002 for $275,000. Paid off the 10-year note in 2012. Went to college, worked my ass off in the corporate world, but became a millionaire driving a cab. Go figure.

So what are teams like Bills then?
And what teams are marquee?

Also could it be NYC isnt exactly around the corner from the meadowlands. In this shitty cold weather. I would want a hotel as close as possible.

IMO, this is a marquee matchup. the Broncos are a top3-5 overall NFL favorite team, the seahawks are prolly top 10

it's the best defense against the best offense.

You've got true legendary status with manning.

marquee baby!

Stadium Holds 82,500 to think people without a ticket are going to flock to 30 degrees and ultra high prices for everything in a 100 mile radius was just stupid. People will be at home in front of their TV, or in nice places like Vegas

There are plenty of 1%ers NFL fans that have discretionary dollars to blow on the superbowl regardless of where it is.

Both teams are staying at hotels less than a 12 minute walk from my apartment. Other than seeing the team buses I have noticed no difference or hullabaloo around town.

I lived in San Diego when the Super Bowl was there. It was totally insane. The weather is taking its toll on the turnout.

Porn Star Savanna Samson: "I Wanna Gang Bang the Seahawks"
Quote:
Richard Sherman is being courted by an award-winning actress ... the star of "Ass Spelunking" and "Sweet 'Ho Alabama" ... who tells TMZ Sports she desperately wants to shoot a gang bang with Seattle's "Legion of Boom."

Savanna Samson -- who won a 2005 AVN award for "Best Gang Bang" -- is out in NYC ... and told us she's a HUUUGE fan of the Seahawks' defense.

In fact, she's such a big fan ... she wants to nail all of 'em at the same time ... on video.

Bring on the 12th Man ... and the 13th man ... and the 14th man ... (you get the point).
I would watch that...

Moron exposed again, this time 3 moron points in 1 sentence

1. Invented that I am middle eastern.
2. Invented that I never been to US.
3. How does not knowing handegg rules makes me unable to realize that only minority of superbowl tourists comes a weeek before the game? And that majority comes only for the weekend or even only for the game? Thats a fact.

mineistaken 3:0 moron (Thats real football score for you )
